First Appearance Chapter 1, as the white-haired sorcerer confronting the Itadori twins 1

Appearance

Gojo is tall, with white hair, bright blue eyes, and a customary black blindfold 1 7 12.

  • Clothing: Usually dressed entirely in black 2 12.
  • Hairstyle: His white hair stands on end while wearing his blindfold 12.
  • Uncovered eyes: He removes or raises the blindfold during serious confrontations and relaxed moments 5 7 14.

Personality

Gojo is playful, provocative, and intensely confident in his strength. He introduces himself as Haruka’s handsome homeroom teacher, gives him teasing nicknames, and treats carrying his lethargic student around as an everyday inconvenience. His confidence can become complacency: during their second battle, he admits that his certainty of being “the strongest” made him overlook the full danger of Haruka’s speed 4 5 13.

His protectiveness initially takes controlling forms. He seals Haruka’s memories of Yuji and later withholds Kai’s farewell recording, believing that suppressing grief will prevent violence and keep his student alive. Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, and Sukuna challenge those decisions. Gojo’s unresolved losses influence his judgment, but he eventually supports Haruka without trying to remove his pain—holding him through his grief and offering him a safe place to rest 5 6 8 11 12.

Abilities & Skills

Limitless

The Gojo Clan’s inherited technique creates an infinite spatial separation between Gojo and approaching threats 2 5.

  • Stops Haruka’s blade immediately before it reaches his eye 2.
  • Prevents Megumi’s punches from touching him 6.
  • Suspends bullets, blood attacks, and slashes centimeters away from Haruka during Gojo’s intervention 12.
  • Can be forcibly nullified by the Inverted Spear of Heaven 5.
  • Does not prevent Sukuna’s temporarily complete manifestation from striking him during their basement confrontation 8.
  • Controlling it places substantial strain on Gojo’s brain 3.

Blue, Red, and Hollow Purple

Gojo uses several named applications of his cursed technique 2 5 8.

Technique Documented use
Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue Gouges out the ground, collapses the surrounding area, and uses attraction to batter opponents with rubble 2 5.
Cursed Technique Reversal: Red Produces a destructive red flash against Sukuna; Sukuna cuts the attack apart with Cleave 8.
Hollow Technique: Purple Fired at Haruka after he obtains the Inverted Spear of Heaven. Gojo fears it may kill him, but Haruka evades it and attacks from behind 5.

Six Eyes

Gojo has possessed the Six Eyes since birth and uses them uncovered during his confrontation with Haruka 5 8.

  • Examines Haruka directly before activating Unlimited Void 5.
  • Does not reliably overcome Haruka’s concealed presence: Gojo initially cannot sense either his cursed energy or his presence 2.
  • Gojo acknowledges that he cannot visually track Haruka at his 92% technique release 5.

Domain Expansion: Unlimited Void

Gojo deploys Unlimited Void to end Haruka’s violent response to Yuji’s reported death 5.

  • Overwhelms Haruka despite his attempt to fight at 100% release 5.
  • Does not stop Haruka from making one final spear throw, which grazes Gojo’s head before Haruka collapses 5.

Reverse Cursed Technique

Gojo uses Reverse Cursed Technique to recover from otherwise critical injuries 5.

  • Heals his abdomen after the Inverted Spear of Heaven penetrates Limitless 5.
  • Repairs his heart after Haruka circles behind him and stabs it 5.
  • Offers to heal Haruka after injuring his ribs, but Yuji refuses to let him approach 2.

Combat and Technique Analysis

Gojo combines close combat with rapid assessment of unfamiliar techniques 2 3.

  • Exploits a momentary change in Haruka’s intent to land a kick, breaking his ribs 2 6.
  • Identifies how Haruka’s speed technique and Heavenly Restriction complement one another, eliminating unnecessary tension and accelerating information processing 3.
  • Summons a huge canine shikigami during the rooftop battle; Sukuna rescues Haruka and defeats it 3.

Equipment / Items

  • Black blindfold — His usual eye covering, removed when he confronts Haruka with the Six Eyes exposed 5 12.
  • Memory-sealing talisman — Used to suppress Haruka’s memories of Yuji. It crumbles to ash when those memories return 5 6.
  • Technique-bearing replacement phone — Substituted for Kai’s keepsake phone to keep Haruka asleep 8.
  • Prison Realm fragments — Brought to the Itadori twins after the final conflict. Contact with Yuji’s cursed energy produces a small, sleeping Haruka 22.

Relationships

  • Haruka Itadori — Student and eventual recipient of Gojo’s affectionate caretaking. Their relationship begins with serious injury and distrust, passes through coercive attempts at protection, and develops into Haruka accepting Gojo as a refuge. Haruka later invites him into the family’s shared nap 2 5 8 12 22.
  • Yuji Itadori — Student whose safety Gojo feels responsible for after his reported death. They clash over Haruka’s right to grieve, but Gojo later agrees to help Yuji confront his missing brother 5 8 16.
  • Megumi Fushiguro — Student who warns Gojo about Haruka’s concealed second blade and openly condemns the memory seal 2 6.
  • Nobara Kugisaki — Student who challenges Gojo for bringing Haruka into danger and shields him from his teacher’s rough handling 6.
  • Ryomen Sukuna — Opponent who physically overpowers Gojo during a temporary complete manifestation and rebukes his treatment of Haruka. Gojo later emerges from the Prison Realm carrying Sukuna after Haruka’s sacrifice 8 21.
  • Suguru Geto — Former friend whose memory shapes Gojo’s fear that Haruka’s defection will repeat an earlier personal failure 16.
  • Jujutsu Society’s higher-ups — Authorities Gojo regards with contempt. He forces concessions to protect Haruka, although they make him responsible for executing the boy if he defects 3 6 8.

Story Role / Major Arcs

First Encounter and Haruka’s Enrollment

Gojo meets the Itadori twins after Yuji swallows a curse. Haruka refuses to surrender his brother and attacks with two cursed tools. His concealed presence, butterfly-knife feints, and explosive speed force Gojo to take him seriously. Gojo’s counterattack breaks Haruka’s ribs, provoking Yuji to offer Sukuna his body in exchange for protecting his younger brother 1 2 6.

After discovering Haruka’s brotherhood vow with Sukuna, Gojo brings him before the higher-ups. He stops Haruka from strangling an elder, then secures his enrollment as a provisional Special Grade sorcerer. The approval makes Gojo responsible for executing Haruka if he defects 3.

Yuji’s Reported Death and the Memory Seal

When Gojo reports that Yuji died preventing Sukuna from taking control, Haruka blames the authorities and prepares to retaliate. Their confrontation escalates after Haruka steals the Inverted Spear of Heaven from the school armory, penetrates Limitless, evades Hollow Purple, and stabs Gojo’s heart 4 5.

Gojo survives through Reverse Cursed Technique and subdues Haruka with Unlimited Void. Faced with his student’s grief, he apologizes but then seals his memories of Yuji. Megumi and Nobara condemn the decision. When Haruka’s memories return, Gojo intervenes before his renewed violence becomes fatal, and Yuji’s appearance allows the brothers to reunite 5 6.

Kai Sagami’s Death

Gojo assigns the twins separate missions to encourage their growth. After Haruka’s enormous Domain Expansion and subsequent collapse, he hides him from authorities demanding his arrest and execution. He also removes Kai’s farewell phone and substitutes an object that prolongs Haruka’s sleep 7 8.

Yuji insists that Haruka must be allowed to hear his friend’s last words. Sukuna intervenes through a Brotherly Binding Vow, strikes Gojo, and challenges his assumption that Haruka should be protected from loss. Later, Gojo holds Haruka’s hand and embraces him while he listens to Kai’s recording and sobs 8 11.

Kyoto Goodwill Event

Gojo stops conservative sorcerers from attacking Haruka and recognizes that his student is resisting his natural lethargy out of fear of failing another loved one. He offers Haruka permission to rest and rely on him 12.

During the attack on the Goodwill Event, a Curtain specifically excludes Gojo. He advises Haruka by phone and arrives after Haruka erases Hanami. Following the event, he presses Haruka to address the Kyoto students’ injuries and investigates the stolen Sukuna fingers, jokingly asking whether Haruka ate them 13 15.

Defection, Shibuya, and Release

After Haruka disappears and the higher-ups are killed, Gojo receives orders identifying him as a curse user. Sukuna reveals that Haruka stole six fingers and secretly arranged for Yuji to swallow them. Gojo initially treats this as evidence of deliberate betrayal, but agrees to support Yuji’s attempt to stop his brother 16.

Gojo is sealed in the Prison Realm at Shibuya. Haruka swallows and modifies the object, restores the prisoners’ access to cursed energy and techniques, and draws Japan’s cursed spirits inside. Gojo appears amid their remains, declares that he must hurry to reach Haruka, and seals Mahito in 0.9 seconds 16 17.

The reincarnating god later identifies Gojo as a potential recipient of the divinity forming within the cursed gu, but no completed ascension is shown. Haruka instead gives the divinity to Sukuna; his sacrifice erases Japan’s curses and opens the Prison Realm, releasing Gojo 21.

Gojo participates in calling Haruka back at graduation and later brings the Prison Realm fragments that enable his return as a small child. The final domestic scene includes him beneath a blanket with Haruka, Yuji, and Sukuna 21 22.
