Background / History

Gawain was an ordinary civil-service exam passer before awakening injured on a deserted island in the body of “Knight” Gawain, captain of a pirate crew pursued by Major Morgans. He inherited the former occupant’s memories, combat instincts, appearance, and unresolved past—including a connection to Queen Guinevere—but not the power needed to face Morgans immediately. 1

His first crisis was a mutiny led by his nominal second-in-command, Lancer. Unlike the former captain, who had adhered to knightly mercy even toward disloyal subordinates, Gawain immediately beheaded Lancer and crushed the revolt. The act restored the crew’s confidence and triggered the Captain System, which rewards Gawain with tenfold gains from his crew’s training. 1 2

After training his crew and strengthening himself, Gawain killed Morgans in a single sword strike, seized a Marine warship, and left the surviving captured Marines on the island rather than massacre them. He initially placed becoming a Shichibukai on his long-term agenda, seeing the position as a way to gain stability and influence. 6 7
