Background / History

Kuro rose from an ordinary pirate to captain of the Black Cat Pirates by killing the crew’s previous captain. His bounty climbed to fifteen million Berry, but years of killing, plundering, and evading the Marines left him exhausted. He began longing for an anonymous, refined life of flowers, dogs, tea, and desserts instead of piracy. 11

While pursuing Lieutenant Commander Morgans’ warship, Kuro intended to use the operation as the opening of his retirement plan, leaving the Black Cat Pirates under a successor chosen from Jango or the Catman Brothers. He threatened to kill them all if the plan failed. 11

His battle with Gawain ended that plan. Gawain could track Shave despite its speed, defeated Kuro, and offered to make him second-in-command. Though Kuro initially accepted death as a relief from piracy, Gawain’s challenge to his view of the world drew him into the crew instead. 13 14 15

Kuro’s fight with Akin changed his ambitions completely. By awakening Observation Haki and confronting the thrill he found in battle, he abandoned his dream of a quiet life and declared his intention to become captain, seize a Shichibukai position, and surpass Gawain. 27 28
