Background / History

Kuro rose from an ordinary pirate to captain of the Black Cat Pirates by killing the crew’s previous captain. His bounty climbed to fifteen million Berry, but years of killing, plundering, and evading the Marines left him exhausted. He began longing for an anonymous, refined life of flowers, dogs, tea, and desserts instead of piracy. 11

While pursuing Lieutenant Commander Morgans’ warship, Kuro intended to use the operation as the opening of his retirement plan, leaving the Black Cat Pirates under a successor chosen from Jango or the Catman Brothers. He threatened to kill them all if the plan failed. 11

His battle with Gawain ended that plan. Gawain could track Shave despite its speed, defeated Kuro, and offered to make him second-in-command. Though Kuro initially accepted death as a relief from piracy, Gawain’s challenge to his view of the world drew him into the crew instead. 13 14 15

Kuro’s fight with Akin changed his ambitions completely. By awakening Observation Haki and confronting the thrill he found in battle, he abandoned his dream of a quiet life and declared his intention to become captain, seize a Shichibukai position, and surpass Gawain. 27 28

Appearance

Kuro is a thin, refined-looking man whose outward appearance can suggest an aristocrat or scholar rather than a pirate. His calm bearing is undermined by the intense killing intent he radiates. 11 375

  • Often wears glasses, which he habitually pushes back into place. 28 233
  • Was seen wearing heart-shaped sunglasses while serving as lookout for the Black Cat Pirates. 11
  • Originally fought with ten Claw Blades fitted over his fingers. 11 13
  • In Kamaitachi forms, develops snow-white fur, blades on his arms, and a long bladed tail. 217 233
  • His awakened speed can reduce him to an afterimage or an invisible whirlwind. 348

Personality

Kuro is calculating, cold, and highly pragmatic. He assesses danger quickly, uses intimidation without hesitation, and is willing to kill powerful political figures when he considers it advantageous. He also understands the value of leverage, as shown when he turned Outlook III’s fears into a favorable agreement for Raven Port. 118 119 170

Beneath his composed, gentlemanly manner is a fierce thirst for combat and slaughter. He initially mistook his exhaustion for a desire to leave piracy behind, but his fight with Akin made him embrace battle as part of his true nature. 11 27 28

He is intensely competitive with Gawain and repeatedly challenges him for the captain’s position. Even after being overwhelmed, Kuro treats each defeat as proof that he needs to train harder rather than a reason to yield. 43 44 218 360

Kuro is also a relentless self-trainer. Before gaining control over Shave, he repeatedly injured himself by crashing into padded walls at high speed, refusing to stop despite bruises and exhaustion. 16

Abilities & Skills

Shave

Kuro’s signature footwork technique accelerates him to speeds beyond ordinary vision, allowing him to attack from multiple directions with his claw blades.

  • Originally caused indiscriminate attacks because its speed overwhelmed his sight, hearing, balance, and directional control. 13 27
  • His technique Shave—Ghost Cry pushed his speed even higher at the cost of severe physical strain. 14
  • Observation Haki allowed him to map his surroundings with his eyes closed and fully control Shave without harming nearby allies. 44 45
  • He later combined Soru and Spoon Stance for explosive close-range acceleration. 218

Observation Haki

Kuro awakened Observation Haki during his battle with Akin after recognizing that instinct and perception could compensate for Shave’s sensory flaws. 27

  • Allows him to sense attacks and hostile movements beyond his normal field of vision. 27 44
  • Lets him maintain precise control while moving at Shave’s highest speeds. 44
  • His killing intent can be compressed so thoroughly that even Observation Haki detects him less clearly. 118

Armament Haki

Kuro awakened Armament Haki after intensive physique training and direct guidance from Gawain. 144 145

  • Strengthens his offense and defense in close combat. 145
  • Combined with his awakened Kamaitachi abilities, it enabled him to suppress Kaido and withstand a direct clash with him. 441

Weasel-Weasel Fruit / Kamaitachi

Kuro possesses a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit associated with the legendary Kamaitachi. The Fruit is exceptionally compatible with his speed-based style. 217 218 233

  • Greatly surpasses his previous maximum burst speed, even before full mastery. 217
  • Generates blades on his arms and tail in transformed forms. 217 233
  • Controls airflow within several meters, enabling high-speed cutting attacks and aerial movement. 217 234
  • Can become an invisible whirlwind while moving at high speed; Kuro describes this as similar to, but not true, elementalization. 217
  • His Human-Beast Form combines enhanced physical power with extreme speed. 218
  • Awakening further improved his Godspeed and neural reflexes, letting him perceive his surroundings even without Observation Haki. 348
  • His Wind King Claws compress high-speed airflow around his fingers into visible emerald-green air blades capable of cutting through Akin’s Armament-enhanced bone armor. 359

Strategy, Negotiation, and Deception

Kuro is an accomplished planner, manipulator, and improvisational actor.

  • Instantly adopted the “Locke” persona and convincingly performed a fabricated anti-pirate backstory to preserve the crew’s Marine disguise. 20
  • Used Outlook III’s fear of exposure and political ambition to secure three hundred million Berry in sponsorship and a stake in the Raven Port Martial Arts Tournament. 119
  • Negotiated the Ryugu Kingdom alliance from a position of advantage, securing Shirahoshi as potential support while offering protection and tournament-based resources. 316

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Claw Blades — Ten sharp blades worn over his fingers; his original preferred weapons and the basis of his early Shave attacks. 11 13
  • Reforged Claw Blades — A newly reforged set prepared before the Martial Arts Tournament. 127
  • Devil Fruit Encyclopedia page — Kuro secretly kept the page describing the Fruit that would later become his Kamaitachi ability, despite initially dismissing Devil Fruits. 104 172
  • Rune of unwavering will — A rune written onto his palm by Morgan that can resist one mental attack and block Jeanne’s hypnosis. 324

Relationships

  • Gawain — Captain, recruiter, mentor, and Kuro’s central rival. Kuro repeatedly seeks to overthrow him, but their rivalry drives Kuro’s growth and he remains Gawain’s trusted first mate. 14 43 144 441
  • Akin — Rival and comrade. Their first battle awakened Kuro’s Observation Haki; later duels repeatedly end in draws or push both fighters into new breakthroughs. 27 139 234 359
  • Jango — Former subordinate in the Black Cat Pirates. Jango feared Kuro deeply but remained loyal because Kuro kept his promises. 11
  • Sam and Buchi — Former Black Cat Pirate subordinates and members of the Catman Brothers. They initially feared Shave’s indiscriminate danger, then recognized Kuro’s complete control over it after his Observation Haki awakening. 13 45
  • Outlook III — Political opponent and negotiating partner. Kuro exploited his fears over succession and secrecy to secure funding for Raven Port. 119
  • Jeanne — Opponent during the Avalon conflict. Kuro fought her alone after awakening his Fruit, ordering Akin and the others to retreat while he delayed her. 348
