Background / History

Akin served Don Krieg with absolute loyalty, repaying a life debt even when Krieg’s methods troubled him. During the Krieg Pirates’ attempt to infiltrate Raven Port under Marine disguises, he posed as a Navy Lieutenant Commander and attempted to expose Gawain and Kuro’s own cover. His identity was exposed when Kuro intercepted his attack on Gawain. 19 20

During Krieg’s assault on Raven Port, Akin’s companion Pal suffered fatal burns. Although Pal warned him that Krieg treated companions as disposable tools, Akin chose to continue the operation and “correct” his captain’s mistake rather than betray him. Krieg later repaid that loyalty by using Akin as a shield while escaping from Gawain. 26 30

Gawain rescued and nursed Akin back to health, then offered him a place as combat captain. Moved by Gawain’s understanding and the prospect of a crew founded on mutual loyalty, Akin joined the Gawain Pirates. 38

Appearance

Akin is a heavily built, pale-faced man whose intimidating features have been compared to those of an evil spirit. His relentless training and the Bones-Bones Fruit dramatically increase his size and alter his silhouette in battle. 154 233

  • Stands over 2.7 meters tall after his initial explosive growth from the Bones-Bones Fruit. 233
  • Originally fought with an Iron Crutch fitted with a detachable metal ball. 134 139
  • His bone armor can enlarge him into a massive armored combatant. 233
  • Second Bone: Skeleton Knight makes him over ten meters tall, with two arms, four legs, a cross-shaped helmet opening, and white bone armor. 315
  • His later combat form manifests three heads, six arms, a centaur-like lower body, bone spikes, and blackened armor. 432 433

Personality

Akin’s defining quality is his loyalty. He initially remains devoted to Krieg because of a debt of life, even after being betrayed and abandoned. Once Gawain saves him, that loyalty shifts completely: Akin considers Gawain the captain who gave him a new life, trusted him, and gave him comrades worthy of entrusting with his back. 19 30 334

He is intensely disciplined and refuses to accept innate limits. Rather than immediately consume the Bones-Bones Fruit when offered it, he chooses to stake his life on becoming stronger through his own will; this conviction raises his potential to Silver Rank. 121

Akin is also fiercely competitive, especially with Kuro. Repeated defeats do not discourage him; they drive him to train harder, specialize his Armament Haki, and pursue the Legendary realm. 234 358 360

Abilities & Skills

Bones-Bones Fruit

Akin possesses the Paramecia-type Bones-Bones Fruit, which allows him to control his own bones, extend them outside his body, and shape them into armor or weapons. He earned the Fruit by reaching the Martial Arts Tournament final and consuming its prize. 121 139

  • Forms bone weapons such as spears, projectiles, and the Spiral Bone Spear. 174 315
  • Creates layered exoskeletons that massively increase defense and raise his physical power beyond the limits of ordinary bones. 174
  • Uses bone vents and compressed air as propulsion for high-speed movement. 174
  • His later forms include the Second Bone: Skeleton Knight and a three-headed, six-armed centaur-like transformation. 315 432
  • His ability is suspected to have reached Devil Fruit awakening, though this is not explicitly confirmed. 432

Armament Haki

Akin awakens Armament Haki while training Iron Body with the Six Powers. His talent for Armament is stated to exceed his talent for Observation Haki. 188 233

  • Initially manifests Haki over his palms and forearms before it dissipates. 188
  • Coats his entire bone-armored body in hardened Armament Haki. 233
  • Devotes a year almost exclusively to tempering Armament Haki. 358
  • Achieves an Armament Transformation-like state by coating every inch of his flesh and bones, making his body a heavily armored “war machine.” 358

Observation Haki — Combat Instinct

Akin awakens Observation Haki during his life-or-death battle with Kuro at Raven Port. 38

  • Uses Observation Haki to track fast opponents and anticipate attacks. 126 234
  • Awakens Combat Instinct while facing Kuro in the Round Table Arena, allowing him to evade an otherwise fatal blow through intuition. 359
  • Combat Instinct is an advanced Observation Haki direction focused on strengthening instinct rather than future prediction. 360

Six Powers and Life Return

Akin trains all six techniques of the Six Powers after joining the Gawain Pirates, seeing the system as a way to develop a fighting style suited to the Bones-Bones Fruit. 186

  • Uses Iron Body training to develop his Armament Haki. 188
  • Masters Life Return, allowing control over every cell in his body. 326
  • Can rapidly recover from injuries by consuming large quantities of food. 326

Physical Strength and Endurance

Akin’s physical resilience is exceptional even among Gawain’s officers. He continues fighting through severe wounds, prolonged imprisonment, and direct clashes with powerful opponents. 27 326 359

  • Blocked Dellinger’s Battle-Axe Heels with his Iron Crutches. 125
  • Fought Kuro for over ten hours in the Martial Arts Tournament final, ending in a draw. 139
  • Held his ground alongside Lucci and Zoro against Fuzf of the Beasts Pirates. 177
  • Defeated Hody Jones despite Hody consuming dozens of E-S pills. 315

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Iron Crutch — Akin’s former primary weapon; used for blocking, striking, and mounting a detachable metal ball. 125 134 139
  • Tonfas — Used defensively during his first battle against Kuro. 26
  • Spiral Bone Spear — A bone weapon created through the Bones-Bones Fruit, used to impale Hody Jones. 315

Relationships

  • Gawain — Captain and the person Akin reveres most. Gawain rescued him after Krieg’s betrayal, recruited him, and inspired his determination to surpass his limits. Akin vows to become Gawain’s right-hand man and help him ascend to the throne. 38 121 139
  • Kuro — Rival and comrade. Their brutal first battle awakened Akin’s Observation Haki; their rivalry continues through tournament finals and the Round Table Arena, pushing both men to grow. 27 139 359
  • Krieg — Former captain. Akin remained loyal to him out of gratitude for a life debt, but Krieg ultimately betrayed him by using him as a shield. 19 30
  • Pal — Former companion in the Krieg Pirates. Pal’s death deeply affected Akin and initially drove him to continue Krieg’s mission. 26
  • Tesoro — Temporary escape partner after Akin’s imprisonment. Tesoro comes to respect Akin’s loyalty to Gawain after witnessing his refusal to abandon his captain. 326 333
  • Straw Hat — Tournament opponent. Akin overwhelms him with his advanced bone forms and ultimately pierces his heart with a bone bullet. 432 433
