Background / History
Shiki belonged to the Rocks Pirates and shared Rocks’s ambition of ruling the world. He later invited Roger to join him in pursuit of that goal. The narration places Roger, Whitebeard, and Golden Lion among the three dominant pirates of the post-Rocks era 322 377.
After hearing of Roger’s capture, Shiki stormed Marine Headquarters alone, where Garp and Sengoku defeated him. His later return to Impel Down recalls his own imprisonment there, particularly the boredom of Level Six 322 522.
Shiki subsequently spent nearly twenty years developing the SIQ Ferocious Beasts. His airborne stronghold, Strong World, comprised eight or nine rocky sky islands sustained by his Devil Fruit. By the time the Marines located it, the beasts’ mutations were approaching his intended stage, making him reluctant to abandon the project 309 310 317.
Appearance
Shiki has long golden hair resembling a lion’s mane and favors Japanese-style clothing that gives him the appearance of a yakuza boss 310 345.
- Hair: His mane spreads across furniture and can reach the floor. After recovering from his injuries, his hair is described as restored 345.
- Head: Before rejuvenation, a ship’s wheel is lodged in a bald patch on his scalp 310.
- Clothing: A black kimono, sometimes trimmed in red, beneath a gold-and-orange or orange-and-yellow striped haori 310 345 522.
- Legs: Initially fights with Oto and Kogarashi mounted on his legs; later uses mechanical lower-leg prosthetics 312 357.
- Rejuvenated appearance: Older Level Six prisoners recognize his distinctive clothing and mane but are astonished by his renewed youth 522.
Personality
Shiki combines enormous pride with practical battlefield judgment. He boasts about his legendary reputation and enjoys challenging strong opponents, but usually avoids unfavorable head-on exchanges. Against Akainu, he uses distance and aerial harassment; against Babbage’s massed firepower, he abandons his original plan and calls for help rather than continue a losing battle of attrition 318 357 449.
His ruthlessness coexists with respect for courage, loyalty, and friendship. He appreciates Luffy’s determination to rescue Ace and chooses to help Isabella when he believes she is endangered, even after deciding the Seven Star Sword is not worth pursuing. Betrayal remains a particular source of anxiety, rooted in his experiences among the Rocks Pirates 317 406 522.
Bondrewd’s assistance gradually changes Shiki’s attitude from suspicion to deep respect. Rejuvenation leaves him almost unquestioningly confident in Bondrewd’s technological capabilities, though he continues to complain about secrecy and last-minute instructions 345 449 522.
Abilities & Skills
Float-Float Fruit
Shiki’s Devil Fruit is the foundation of his flight, airborne strongholds, and large-scale battlefield control 309 312 532.
- Terrain manipulation: Raises earth and stone into enormous waves, projectiles, and lion-shaped attacks 314 318 398.
- Seawater control: Lifts vast quantities of seawater into shields, suspended masses, and waterspouts. Against Akainu, repeated water attacks force the Admiral to divide his attention between offense and defense 314 318.
- Object manipulation: Sends ships crashing into one another and gathers scattered weapons and cannon fragments into a Metal Storm 312 397.
- Precision disruption: Uses Venomous Snake after touching a mechanical escort unit, sending it out of control into another unit 357.
- Transport and construction: Sustains floating islands, carries escaping prisoners on a raised section of dock, and rearranges his flagship’s interior to accommodate Sanjuan Wolf 309 526 532.
- Limits: His terrain attacks are better at occupying elite opponents than decisively injuring them. Hurricanes can disrupt his floating movement, and Sephiroth’s weather control and water-excluding defenses counter his usual advantages 402 611.
Swordsmanship
Shiki is a Great Swordsman who combines twin blades, flying weapons, leg-mounted sword attacks, and Devil Fruit manipulation 312 314 357.
| Technique | Applications |
|---|---|
| Lion: Thousand-Cut Valley | Releases a dense network of golden Flying Slashes. Forces an Admiral and four Vice Admirals to scatter and later badly wounds Onigumo 312 314. |
| Slash Wave | A ranged cutting attack that can curve or twist through the air. Used against mechanized troops, flames, and airborne swordsmen 357 402 404. |
| Super Slash Wave | A powerful Flying Slash wrapped in Conqueror’s Haki; used against Issho and Kizaru’s projectile barrages 451 540. |
| Four-sword technique | Drives Momousagi out of the battle’s airspace during the Marine Dojo confrontation 401. |
- Direct cutting power: His concentrated, close-range sword strike is stronger against a single target than his ordinary Flying Slashes, though Babbage’s upgraded armor withstands it 357.
- Combat intuition: Decades of experience give him an advantage in swordsman’s instinct over Sephiroth, despite being disadvantaged in their sword-technique and Observation Haki exchanges 402.
- Limits: Ordinary Slash Waves cannot penetrate Sephiroth’s powerful Light Spears. Shiki cannot sustain a Conqueror’s Coating barrage to answer them efficiently 406.
Haki
Shiki uses all three forms of Haki, including Conqueror’s Coating 357 398.
- Observation Haki: Anticipates dangerous artillery and supports his evasive aerial combat. Its swordsman-oriented sensitivity lets him react quickly to immediate threats 357 406.
- Observation limits: Kizaru’s light-speed repositioning can leave him half a beat late. Issho’s emotion-sensitive perception also gains an advantage over his conventional Observation Haki 318 451.
- Armament Haki: Reinforces his blades and allows him to withstand lesser gunfire when evasion is impractical 318 357.
- Conqueror’s Coating: Strengthens sword strikes and ranged slashes, allowing him to exchange blows with Sephiroth and break through Kizaru’s light barrage 398 540.
- Mental resistance: Resists the Seven Star Sword’s intrusive memories and influence with Conqueror’s Haki 404.
- Defensive cost: Powerful energy attacks consume substantial Armament Haki even when blocked; sustained exchanges with Sephiroth threaten to exhaust his defenses 406 610.
Aerial Combat
Flight is Shiki’s specialty rather than merely a means of travel 357.
- Uses abrupt climbs, dives, and sweeping turns to evade artillery and break encirclements 312.
- Maintains altitude against opponents dependent on Geppo and limited island-cloud supplies 314.
- Combines evasive positioning with ranged harassment instead of matching Akainu’s superior raw strength 318.
- Remains vulnerable to coordinated fire covering his predicted flight paths and the moments immediately after he changes direction 357.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Oto and Kogarashi — His two renowned swords. Initially mounted on his legs, they are later carried at his waist or manipulated as floating weapons 312 357 522.
- Mechanical lower-leg prosthetics — Replacement legs with rocket thrusters for short bursts of accelerated movement 345 357.
- Sage’s Stone — Shiki understands his continued rejuvenation and freedom from aging as dependent on the Stone remaining inside his body. He minimizes this drawback when trying to recruit Whitebeard 533.
- Flying Admiral — A floating earth-and-rock island shaped like a warship, furnished with Japanese castles, palace buildings, cannons, and a large recreation hall 532.
- Access to the Abyss — Bondrewd grants Shiki limited control authority over the alliance flagship, allowing him to signal for assistance during the Babbage battle 357.
- Seven Star Sword, temporarily — Resists its influence and tests its green flames, but finds its inherited swordsmanship and offensive boost inferior to his own capabilities. Sephiroth subsequently secures it 404 406.
Relationships
- Bondrewd — Alliance leader, rescuer, and benefactor. Shiki initially accepts his leadership provisionally, then develops respect approaching that of a subordinate despite the Flying Pirates’ formal independence 321 449 522.
- Dr. Indigo — Longstanding companion and scientific adviser. Helps investigate suspected leaks, operates the Abyss to rescue him, and encourages him to question Bondrewd’s claims 312 357 449.
- Gol D. Roger — Former rival and attempted recruit. Shiki’s reaction to Roger’s capture drove his lone attack on Marine Headquarters 312 322.
- Whitebeard / Newgate — Fellow old-era pirate whom Shiki wants to fight alongside again. Saves him from Akainu and offers rejuvenation, but Whitebeard rejects dependence on Bondrewd 533 534.
- Sephiroth / Great Angel — Repeated opponent and attempted recruit. Shiki admires his strength but becomes increasingly frustrated by his unconventional swordsmanship and overwhelming versatility 401 406 610.
- Isabella / Flame Angel — Chooses to assist her when he believes hostages prevent her from fighting freely, placing that concern above recovering the Seven Star Sword 406.
- Red Count / Redfield — Old-era acquaintance whose mind reading exposes Shiki’s genuine respect for Bondrewd. Later cooperates with him to protect the alliance’s retreat 522 545.
- Ochoku — Former Rocks associate. Rejects his attempt to bargain for Road Island membership, defeats him, and leaves him alive 606 610.
- Tashigi — Indirectly influences her development: seeing Shiki and Issho combine Devil Fruits with swordsmanship helps her abandon the belief that doing so betrays the sword 580.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Strong World and the Marine Assault
Sephiroth covertly prepares contact with Shiki through Bondrewd’s organization while Marine and Cipher Pol investigations close in on the Flying Pirates. Fick’s diplomatic visit is interrupted by an assault led by Akainu and four Vice Admirals. Shiki destroys much of their aerial fleet and defeats or grounds the Vice Admirals before Kizaru joins the fight 277 309 312 314 317.
The two Admirals eventually overwhelm him. Bondrewd evacuates his personnel and helps him escape; without Shiki sustaining them, the floating islands fall into the sea three hours later. Shiki accepts Bondrewd’s leadership provisionally 318 321.
Gran Tesoro
Shiki joins the undercover visit to Gran Tesoro and follows Bondrewd’s advice to confront Babbage with a metal-free meteor, limiting the awakened Magnet-Magnet Fruit user’s advantage. Babbage’s armor and coordinated Zaku forces frustrate Shiki’s attempts to win directly 345 355 357.
Unable to disengage as planned, Shiki calls in the Abyss and escapes through the Ashen. During the later aerial battle, Bondrewd shields him and arranges his extraction aboard the alliance flagship 357 367.
Asuka and the Seven Star Sword
Shiki raids the Marine Dojo and overwhelms Shuzo, whose cursed-sword powers sustain a reckless assault. He then fights Sephiroth and Momousagi while attempting to obtain the Seven Star Sword 396 397 398.
After resisting and testing the sword, he judges its benefits disappointing. Sephiroth’s intensified attacks drive him away and create an opening to secure it. Shiki abandons the sword and turns toward Isabella’s apparent danger instead 404 406.
Ruluka and the Rainbow Mist
Shiki accompanies Bondrewd’s operation at Ruluka, assigned to fight outside the Rainbow Mist while the Praying Hands survey its interior. Issho counters his terrain attacks with gravity and gains the upper hand in their ranged exchange. Held back by Issho, Shiki fails to intercept Babbage before the Mechanical King enters the mist 423 449 451.
Impel Down Breakout
Shiki returns to Impel Down alongside Bondrewd, contributing his knowledge of the prison. He badly wounds Hannyabal without killing him, then flies over the deputy warden rather than prolonging the confrontation 518 519.
Given authority to select Level Six recruits, he ignores the ordinary prisoners’ pleas and approaches notable figures such as Redfield. During the evacuation, he raises part of the dock to transport prisoners toward the Abyss and leads the retreat while Bondrewd confronts the Great Angel 522 523 526.
Paramount War
Aboard the Flying Admiral, Shiki announces two objectives: recruit Whitebeard with an offer of rejuvenation and prepare a ritual. He intervenes at Marineford to stop Akainu’s killing blow against Whitebeard, but his recruitment offer is rejected 532 533.
Shiki fights alongside Whitebeard and Red Count, keeps Kizaru occupied in the air, and drops Obelisks across the plaza for Bondrewd’s ritual. When the alliance withdraws, he and Red Count cover its escape aboard the Flying Admiral 534 540 545.
Hachinosu
Shiki attacks Ochoku in Hachinosu’s skull-shaped headquarters and defeats him in the former Rocks Pirates’ conference hall, leaving him alive. A message apparently from Bondrewd—actually Lilith impersonating him—orders Shiki to delay the arriving enemies until the ritual is ready 606 610.
With Redfield and Bullet occupied elsewhere, Shiki intercepts Sephiroth and attempts to buy ten minutes. Sephiroth’s impact-canceling sword and Light Spears force him onto the defensive; the ensuing battle eventually sends him crashing through several buildings 610 611 612.
