Background / History

As a child, Yamato witnessed Oden’s execution by boiling. The spectacle profoundly affected her, but her lasting attachment to samurai also came from Oden’s journal and the kindness of three imprisoned daimyo. Kaido confined her with those men and provided only one portion of food, hoping they would attack his child. Instead, they concealed their identities, gave Yamato their food, and ultimately died while she survived 162 163.

Yamato spent her life confined to Onigashima, wearing explosive handcuffs and enduring Kaido’s violent discipline.
