Background / History
Assassin upbringing
Killua grows up in the Zoldyck family’s tightly controlled assassin household. His childhood includes torture training that leaves him able to endure powerful electric shocks. He is already familiar with Heavens Arena from a visit at age six 71 88.
His mother, Kikyo, calls him the family’s most gifted heir and insists that friendship will weaken him. Illumi reinforces that isolation by implanting a Nen needle in his head while he is young, compelling him to flee from stronger opponents 57 67.
Hunter Exam
Killua enters the exam after running away from the family business, seeking an interesting experience. He meets Gon and Luo Ye during Satotz’s underground endurance run and quickly becomes comfortable with their banter 13 14.
His assassin skills become unmistakable in Trick Tower, where he kills a prisoner with a single strike. During the badge-hunting phase, he takes a different role: organizing a three-person plan in which Luo Ye occupies Hisoka, Killua watches for an opening, and Gon steals the badge 29 41 43.
- Fourth-phase success: All five members of his group pass, but seeing Gittarackur leaves Killua tense and withdrawn 51.
- Netero’s challenge: He uses Rhythm Echo in an unsuccessful attempt to take Netero’s volleyball, then reacts angrily when Netero questions the fear constraining his movements 52 53.
- Illumi’s revelation: Gittarackur reveals himself as Illumi, threatens Killua’s friendship with Gon, and explains the implanted needle 56 57.
- Disqualification: Emotionally overwhelmed, Killua tears out Pokkle’s heart before Pokkle can finish surrendering. He leaves the venue without responding to his friends 59 60.
First return to Kukuroo Mountain
After returning home, Killua is confined in a basement, suspended by chains and covered in whip marks. Silva releases him and listens as he describes his friendship with Gon. Their conversation ends with a blood oath that Killua will never betray his friends 69.
Killua reunites with Gon, Leorio, Kurapika, and Luo Ye, who have traveled to the estate to bring him back. The five leave together through the Testing Gate; Killua looks back at Kukuroo Mountain without the fear that previously defined it for him 70.
Heavens Arena and Whale Island
Killua recommends Heavens Arena as a place to earn money, fight, and obtain underworld information. His easy victories initially reinforce his confidence, but Zushi’s aura reminds him of Illumi and drives him to question Wing’s misleading explanation of the power 71 73 74 75.
Wing eventually teaches him Nen alongside Gon and Kurapika. After learning Ten and Ren, Killua demonstrates electricity-based Nen against Riehlvelt. He later travels to Whale Island, where Mito’s welcoming household gives him an unfamiliar experience of ordinary family warmth 78 86 88 91 92.
Yorknew City and Greed Island
In Yorknew, Killua researches the underground auction and warns his companions about the Mafia and Phantom Troupe. He and Gon nevertheless pursue Nobunaga and Machi for their bounties, only to be ambushed and captured. Killua blames his own overconfidence while watching Gon endure repeated defeats at Nobunaga’s hands 95 109 110.
Luo Ye rescues both boys. Later, Killua watches Silva and Zeno fight Chrollo and realizes how far his family’s strongest fighters stand above his current abilities 112 117 118 119.
- Greed Island entry: Attends the player-selection trials with Gon 130 132.
- Biscuit’s intervention: Initially dismisses Biscuit when she declares that she will become their teacher 137.
- Bomber confrontation: Knocks Sub unconscious as Sub tries to flee 143.
- Razor’s match: Supports Luo Ye from behind, channeling his Nen into his arms to keep Luo Ye from being driven out of bounds 147.
- Game completion: Accompanies Gon as the group selects its three cards to take into the real world 149.
Chimera Ant operation
Killua accompanies Gon and Kite into the Chimera Ant crisis. Neferpitou’s malicious En overwhelms him, but he recognizes that staying near Luo Ye’s battle would only endanger the group and persuades Gon to retreat 151 159 161.
After earning a token in Netero’s qualification trial, he joins the East Gorteau operation. He kills two Ant captains during the covert advance and enters the palace with Gon under orders to occupy Neferpitou 170 172 176 177.
His efforts increasingly center on protecting Gon. He cannot react quickly enough to intercept Pitou’s attack, later carries the unconscious Gon with maximum-output Godspeed, and calls for retreat when the Poor Man’s Rose spreads poisonous wind across the battlefield 184 186 187 188.
Saving Gon
When doctors conclude that Gon’s Death Contract has caused damage beyond conventional treatment, Killua is devastated and blames himself. Luo Ye’s suggestion that the Zoldycks might possess a remedy reminds him of Alluka and Nanika, giving him a concrete rescue plan 192 193.
Killua returns to Kukuroo Mountain despite fearing that Illumi will kill Gon to prevent the wish. Luo Ye defeats the estate’s resistance and overwhelms Illumi; seeing his brother rendered helpless weakens Killua’s long-standing terror of him 194 195 196.
Killua reaches Alluka and asks Nanika to heal Gon. Once Gon wakes, Killua embraces him in tears. His relief turns to alarm when Luo Ye deliberately refuses Nanika’s demands, while Killua holds Alluka after Nanika retreats and she falls asleep 197.
Later appearances
- Fifth-level cargo hold: Accompanies Luo Ye, Gon, and Kurapika into the destructive battle between Hisoka and Chrollo’s newly recruited Spiders 243.
- VIP Studio headquarters: Questions Luo Ye’s use of Dark Continent calamities as construction materials and considers the workers’ treatment harsher than assassin-family discipline. Luo Ye subsequently leaves him and Gon in charge of supervising the crew 252.
Appearance
Killua is a silver-haired boy with blue, catlike eyes, usually dressed in loose casual clothing 59 69 70 88.
- Mischievous grin: Returns prominently during his reunion with his friends 70.
- Transformable fingernails: Lengthens them into sharp claws when preparing to fight 136 157 177.
- Blue electrical effects: High-voltage current gathers around his hands and feet when he uses his electricity-based techniques 172 186.
- Post-confinement injuries: Rejoins the group wearing facial bandages from Kikyo’s attempt to stop him 70.
Personality
Killua is playful, competitive, and quick to tease. He mocks Leorio’s apparent age, trades insults comfortably with Luo Ye, and initially dismisses Zushi and Biscuit. His pride is backed by genuine assassin expertise, though unfamiliar Nen abilities repeatedly unsettle him 13 73 74 137 166.
He often acts as the group’s practical counterweight. He breaks plans into roles, requests detailed information about opponents, and warns against Luo Ye’s recklessness. During the Hisoka badge theft, his patience and battlefield reading keep Gon from acting too early 41 42 43 46 95.
His upbringing produces a sharp contrast between emotional distance and personal loyalty. He can kill without visible hesitation, yet becomes deeply protective of Gon and Alluka. Illumi’s conditioning leaves him vulnerable to fear and self-doubt, while friendship gives him reasons to challenge that control 29 57 59 109 192 197.
Ordinary affection initially makes him awkward. Visiting Gon’s home feels unfamiliar, but Mito’s kindness gradually puts him at ease, and he enjoys the freedom of sharing a family meal 91 92.
