Background / History

Kurapika belongs to the Kurta Clan, whose Scarlet Eyes were stolen during its massacre. Uvogin later recognizes him as a survivor and openly admits participating in the slaughter. Kurapika pursues both vengeance against the Phantom Troupe and access to the market where his people’s eyes are sold 91 114.

He initially seeks money to enter Yorknew City’s underground auction circles. After discovering that Heavens Arena’s 200th floor offers no prize money, he prioritizes combat training and eventually chooses mafia bodyguard work as his route into the auction’s inner circle 71 79 91.

Appearance

Kurapika is a handsome, composed youth with short blond hair covering his ears. He first appears in traditional clothing and later adopts fitted black suits for his bodyguard work 8 45 94 96.

  • Scarlet Eyes — His eyes turn intensely red during anger and the activation of Emperor Time 27 114.
  • Ordinary eye color — Described as brown in some passages and blue or azure in others 27 114 115 242.
  • Right-hand chains — Five silver chains of different shapes emerge from his fingers; he also keeps fine chains visible near his cuff 94 96.
  • Professional dress — Wears an immaculate black suit with neatly combed hair for the Nostrade interview and a black tie during his Yorknew assignment 94 96.

Personality

Kurapika is analytical, cautious, and usually restrained. He notices that the Kiriko’s trail has been deliberately laid out, exposes Machiff’s hidden coin, and identifies fake blood during the Nostrade interview. His most controlled victories come from reading deception rather than overpowering an opponent 10 27 94.

Pride in his clan can make him judgmental. He initially dismisses Leorio as money-grubbing, but apologizes after witnessing his care for an injured sailor. He also disagrees with Luo Ye’s harsh view that other candidates’ deaths are merely background to one’s own survival 8 36.

His hatred of the Spider combines extraordinary resolve with dangerous self-neglect. He refuses to surrender to Hanzo despite a broken arm and later uses Emperor Time at the expense of his lifespan. By the Yorknew reunion, his former gentleness has become a guarded, blade-like coldness, though Gon’s greeting briefly softens him 54 96 114.

His attachment to friends remains stronger than a purely single-minded vendetta. He captures Chrollo to exchange him for Gon and Killua, making their safety the immediate priority. Chrollo exploits that concern to provoke him, while Luo Ye’s interruption helps him regain control 125 126 127.

Killing Uvogin brings emptiness rather than satisfaction. Kurapika buries him as a final act of respect and to occupy himself after the fight. His eventual release from revenge comes from seeing the surviving Spiders deprived of their freedom, not from completing their extermination 115 244 250 251.

Abilities & Skills

Scarlet Eyes and Emperor Time

The Scarlet Eyes accompany intense emotional states; Emperor Time is the explicitly identified Specialization ability used during Kurapika’s duel with Uvogin 27 54 114.

  • Allows him to use every Nen category at 100% efficiency 114.
  • Produces a marked increase in his physical abilities and the quality and quantity of his aura 114.
  • Enables him to conjure a translucent, cross-marked shield that completely blocks Uvogin’s Big Bang Impact 114.
  • Costs one hour of lifespan for every second of use 114.
  • Overuse leaves him feverish, unconscious, and physically depleted; he collapses again after the hideout battle 117 120 130.
  • Does not overcome the ruins gravekeeper’s incorporeal curse: his attempted chain attacks fail as aura is consumed outside his body 235 236.

Chain Conjuration

Kurapika’s confirmed natural affinity lets him turn aura into tangible weapons. His developed arsenal consists of five differently shaped chains 87 94.

  • Breaks Nen projectiles and strikes opponents at range 88.
  • Snaps a blade and restrains another attacker by the neck during his bodyguard interview 94.
  • Attacks from difficult angles while he maintains distance through agile movement 114.
  • Conceals a chain with In, catching Uvogin’s wrist before he notices it 114.
  • Forms a defensive net that blocks Franklin’s Nen bullets and restrains Nobunaga during the hideout battle 129.

Chain Jail

Chain Jail binds its target and forces them into Zetsu, removing access to Nen 104.

  • Captures Uvogin after Luo Ye’s confrontation leaves him stunned 104.
  • Neutralizes Uvogin again during their decisive duel 115.
  • Seals Chrollo’s aura during the hotel blackout before he can activate an ability 123.
  • Leaves a bound opponent without the aura reinforcement that normally strengthens their body 104 115.

Judgment Chain

Judgment Chain pierces the target’s heart and establishes a rule. Breaking that rule causes the chain to crush the heart 115.

  • Uvogin: Must answer Kurapika’s questions or die; his refusal triggers the punishment 115.
  • Chrollo: Must not use Nen abilities or contact any Phantom Troupe member 127.
  • Pakunoda: Must not reveal information about Kurapika to the Troupe; her Memory Bullets violate the restriction and kill her 127 129.
  • Kurapika describes the power as grounded in restrictions and vows established with his life as the price 115.

Healing Chain

The Healing Chain uses a silver cross that emits gentle white light during treatment 229.

  • Attempts to purge an infected mercenary’s condition 229.
  • Fails against the immortality disease because it is not ordinary poison, but a rule-based power altering cellular lifespan 229.

Physical Combat and Endurance

  • Dodges a whip user’s attacks and precisely strikes the wrist, shoulder, and knee with his scabbard without drawing his wooden sword 72.
  • Endures Hanzo’s assault and a broken arm without surrendering, although he loses consciousness after the match 54.
  • Uses accurate chain strikes against Uvogin’s joints and vital points 114.
  • His Ten protects him from gunfire during the staged Nostrade interview 94.

Analysis and Research

  • Detects deliberately misleading trails, hidden cheating, and staged violence 10 27 94.
  • Collects detailed observations of the Amori Brothers’ habits for Killua’s ambush plan 46.
  • Uses the paid Hunter Website to locate the Zoldyck estate on Kukuroo Mountain 61.
  • Estimates that deciphering the ruins entrance’s unknown script would require at least three months 234.
  • Identifies the ruined laboratory as a site of forbidden life-fusion experiments 235.
  • Resists Pap’s pleasure-based mental influence by holding onto his desire for revenge 228.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Wooden sword and scabbard — Carried during the early Heavens Arena period; the scabbard doubles as a precision striking weapon 72 76 89.
  • Hunter License — Grants access to the Hunter Website’s intelligence services 61.
  • Nostrade identification card — Issued after passing the preliminary bodyguard interview 94.
  • Night-vision goggles — Used to navigate the hotel blackout and reach Chrollo’s suite 123.

  • Handgun — Carried alongside his conjured chains while protecting Queen Oito and the Fourteenth Prince 208 210.

  • Gon Freecss — Friend and teammate. Helps reconcile Kurapika with Leorio, supports his exam efforts, and is one of the captives Kurapika risks his revenge plan to rescue 8 46 54 125 127.
  • Leorio — Initially clashes with Kurapika over money and clan honor; becomes a trusted friend who repeatedly treats him and stays behind during his prolonged recovery 8 117 130.
  • Killua Zoldyck — Teammate and strategist. Designs the Amori Brothers ambush; Kurapika later joins the effort to recover him from his family and negotiates his release from the Troupe 46 61 127.
  • Luo Ye — Ally whose methods Kurapika often distrusts. Helps him obtain exam points, advises him before mafia employment, and joins his campaign against the Spider. Their partnership combines practical support with Luo Ye’s self-interest 36 45 91 122.
  • Hanzo — Final-exam opponent. Overwhelms and injures Kurapika, then surrenders when his Scarlet Eyes and aura make continuing seem too dangerous 54.
  • Dalzollene — Nostrade bodyguard captain and interviewer. Recognizes Kurapika’s ability and assigns him auction perimeter security 94 99.
  • Melody — Fellow successful bodyguard applicant. Independently identifies the staged attackers’ lack of genuine intent 94.

  • Chrollo Lucilfer — Principal revenge target. Captured, restricted, and later encountered after rebuilding the Troupe; his forced employment eventually helps Kurapika relinquish his vendetta 123 127 243 244 250.
  • Pakunoda — Hostage-exchange negotiator. Accepts Kurapika’s information restriction, then sacrifices herself to inform her comrades 127 129.
  • Shizuku — Excluded from Kurapika’s bargain with Luo Ye after he confirms she joined after the Kurta massacre 122.
  • Queen Oito and the Fourteenth Prince — Employers he protects during the Succession War. News of danger to them provokes an urgent attempt to return from the Dark Continent 208 210 238.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Hunter Exam

Kurapika joins Gon, Leorio, and Luo Ye aboard the exam-bound ship. His clash with Leorio ends in mutual apologies after the storm. He subsequently contributes to the Kiriko test by recognizing the suspicious trail and uses the restaurant password to reach the concealed exam entrance 8 10 11.

During the prisoner matches, Machiff’s threat to collect his eyes triggers the Scarlet Eyes. Kurapika nevertheless exposes the cheating coin and wins without touching his opponent. On ZIBI Sweat Island, he eventually trades his badge to Luo Ye in return for the team’s help hunting Imori 27 45 46.

In the final trial, Hanzo’s superior physical fighting leaves him badly injured. Kurapika’s refusal to yield and frightening red-eyed aura prompt Hanzo to surrender, immediately qualifying him as a Hunter 54.

Kukuroo Mountain and Heavens Arena

Kurapika uses his new license to find Killua’s family estate, then joins the weighted training and coordinated effort to open the Testing Gate. Afterward, his need to finance the recovery of the Scarlet Eyes takes him to Heavens Arena 61 64 65 71.

Hisoka’s aura blocks the group from entering the 200th floor, forcing them to seek Wing’s real Nen instruction. Kurapika discovers his Conjuration affinity and develops a chain capable of defeating an experienced Emission fighter 76 77 87 88.

Yorknew City and the Anti-Spider Campaign

Kurapika passes the Nostrade bodyguard interview and takes perimeter security duty at the underground auction. Surveillance footage of Feitan’s spider tattoo confirms that the Troupe has appeared 94 96 99 100.

After capturing Uvogin, he defeats him in a separate duel using Emperor Time, Chain Jail, and Judgment Chain. The victory leaves him emotionally hollow, and the backlash puts him out of action for two days 104 114 115 120.

Luo Ye’s challenge to the false reports of the Troupe’s destruction renews Kurapika’s pursuit. They agree on a joint campaign that leaves Shizuku to Luo Ye. Kurapika captures Chrollo during a blackout, exchanges him for Gon and Killua, and imposes lethal restrictions on both Chrollo and Pakunoda 120 122 123 127.

At the hideout, Pakunoda dies after violating her restriction. Kurapika blocks Franklin’s gunfire and restrains Nobunaga while Luo Ye kills the Troupe members present. Kurapika collapses from overusing Emperor Time and enters another prolonged recovery under Leorio’s care 129 130.

Succession War and Dark Continent Expedition

On the Black Whale, Kurapika protects Queen Oito and the Fourteenth Prince from the escalating Succession War. He remains focused on guarding them despite exhaustion and warns Luo Ye about the uncontrolled Nen Beasts 208 210.

During the Dark Continent expedition, his knowledge and Nen repeatedly encounter limits: Pap attacks the mind, the immortality disease defeats his Healing Chain, and the ruins gravekeeper consumes his external aura. He survives the sensory curse after Luo Ye defeats its source 228 229 234 235 236.

A distress call from the ship brings his protective duties back to the forefront. Imagining Oito and the prince in danger, he tries to rush away before Leorio reminds him how far they are from the New Continent 238.

Release from Revenge

Kurapika confronts Chrollo again during the cargo-hold battle but restrains himself while Luo Ye takes control. Seeing the surviving Spiders forced into debt-bound labor makes him laugh and weakens his desire to kill them 243 244.

By the expedition’s return, he watches the Spider remnants hauling cargo and dismisses his chain. He tells Gon that taking away their freedom is crueler than killing them. Seeing Chrollo reduced to a doorman at the subsequent creditors’ convention finally leaves him at peace 250 251.

Trivia

  • His exam badge is 404 when issued and when handed to Luo Ye. The island draw in another passage instead identifies 199 as Kurapika’s number 12 36 37 45.
  • Chain placement is inconsistent in later passages: Judgment Chain is identified with the little finger during Uvogin’s execution, while the airport scene describes an index-finger chain before naming the same ability 115 127.
  • Luo Ye repeatedly calls him a “former employee,” extending the exam team’s VIP Victory-Farming Studio joke into their later dealings 49 91 96 210 244.
