Background / History
Gon grows up on Whale Island under Mito’s care alongside Luo Ye, his childhood friend. He repeatedly speaks of becoming a Hunter to find Ging, the father he has never met 1.
At nine, Gon is rescued by Kite in Fox Bear territory. Kite tells him that Ging is alive, providing an early connection to his father’s world. Gon recognizes Kite when they meet again after Greed Island 151.
Mito initially opposes Gon’s Hunter ambitions because Ging abandoned family life to pursue his career. She makes permission conditional on catching the King of the Swamp. Gon’s first attempt ends with a broken rod; he and Luo Ye then build stronger equipment and revise their approach 2 3 4.
Appearance
Gon is a small, thin boy with spiky black hair and golden eyes. His documented arena outfit is short and green 84 184 199.
- Eyes: Usually bright and expressive; turn entirely black during his Restriction-and-Vow transformation 164 184 199.
- Transformed physique: Becomes taller and heavily muscular, tearing through his shirt 184.
- Transformed hair: Grows rapidly toward the ceiling as his borrowed power manifests 184.
Personality
Gon is enthusiastic, sociable, and quick to treat strangers as potential friends. He introduces himself openly to Leorio and Kurapika, tries to ease their argument, and welcomes Zushi’s earnest manners. His generosity also appears in his delight at saving arena winnings for Mito 8 73.
His determination is both a strength and a danger. After failing to catch the King of the Swamp, he returns to problem-solving rather than giving up. In combat, however, he sometimes prioritizes firsthand experience over warnings: he secretly enters a match against Gido while knowing only basic Ten and suffers serious injuries 3 83 84.
Friendship takes precedence over achievement. Gon refuses his Hunter License after Killua’s disqualification, insists on bringing him back, and withstands Canary’s repeated blows without retaliating. His defense of Killua centers on the belief that his friend is a person entitled to choose his own life 57 60 66 67.
Gon also makes blunt moral judgments. He rejects the Phantom Troupe and challenges Nobunaga’s willingness to mourn a comrade while disregarding the families of the Troupe’s victims. When protecting Killua from Pitou, this same uncompromising loyalty drives him to sacrifice his future for immediate power 110 111 184.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Endurance
- Pushes a burly opponent weighing over two hundred pounds out of the arena with little apparent effort 72.
- Runs the Hunter Exam marathon with light steps and seemingly inexhaustible energy 13.
- Repeatedly rises after Canary knocks him down, continuing despite his injuries 66.
- Recovers fully from the injuries sustained against Gido during Wing’s two-month ban 86.
- Limit: Persistence does not prevent serious damage. Gido breaks his arm, while his later Nen vow leaves his body near death 84 192.
Nen Fundamentals
| Technique | Documented use | Limit or outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Ten | Contains his newly released aura and protects him from Hisoka’s oppressive pressure 78 89. | Basic Ten alone is insufficient preparation for a veteran Nen fighter such as Gido 83 84. |
| Zetsu | Suppresses his presence while following Nobunaga and Machi with Killua 109. | The Troupe notices the pursuit from the beginning and leads both boys into an ambush 109. |
| Ren | Releases a large volume of aura to strengthen combat performance 86 95. | A powerful but straightforward punch is completely absorbed by Luo Ye’s Passive Devouring 95. |
| Gyo | Concentrates aura into his eyes to see the paths and aura flow of Gido’s tops 88. | Enables him to identify openings and counter the attack that previously overwhelmed him 88. |
| Hatsu / Enhancement | Channels Enhancement Nen into Ging’s sealed box, activating its lock 92. | His natural affinity is confirmed through overflowing water in Water Divination 87. |
Jajanken: Rock
- Concentrates his aura into his right fist before delivering a powerful punch 147.
- Uses the attack to propel a ball through Razor’s defense and knock him out of bounds 147.
- Team support: Killua holds the ball as a stable platform, while Hisoka anchors the group with Bungee Gum 147.
- Prepares a devastating Jajanken during his transformation against Pitou, but Luo Ye interrupts him before it is released 184.
Restriction and Vow / Death Contract
- Forces open and expands his aura nodes to draw out future life energy and potential 184.
- Produces a drastic physical transformation and an unprecedented torrent of black aura 184.
- Motivation: Protecting Killua from Pitou—not grief over Kite’s death, since Kite survives in this version of events 184.
- Cost: Severe Nen backlash, destroyed aura nodes, torn muscle fibers, and collapsed bone density; Nanika’s intervention is required to save him 192 197.
Fishing, Stealth, and Fieldcraft
- Uses his knowledge of the forest to find flexible, sturdy wood for a replacement fishing rod 4.
- Constructs a crude reel from wood and scrap iron, with line made from vine fibers and spider silk 4.
- Silently casts across dozens of meters to hook Hisoka’s badge while Luo Ye distracts him 43.
- Searches Yorknew’s crowded streets for unusual clues through smell 107.
- Limit: His concealment and senses fail against experienced Troupe members and a hidden Chimera Ant 109 150 151.
Tactical Ingenuity and Observation
- Provokes Johnny the Dismemberer with a candle contest, then dodges and trips his enraged charge off the platform 26.
- Initially studies Gido’s tops through their impacts when he cannot visually track them; after training, replaces this dangerous approach with Gyo 84 88.
- Answers Greed Island’s clear-game quiz through detailed memories of cities, NPCs, and card designs 148.
- Uses Paladin’s Necklace to reveal that one selected Accompany card is actually Magnetic Force 149.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Candidate badge No. 405 — Gon’s own badge, worth three points during the fourth phase 12 44.
- Hisoka’s badge No. 44 — Stolen with Killua and Luo Ye’s assistance; supplies the remaining three points Gon needs to complete the phase 43 44.
- Hunter License — Initially refuses his own license until he can find Killua and earn his acknowledgment. Later explicitly regards himself as having earned it 60 164.
- Ging’s old Hunter License — Given to Gon by Kite as proof that he is qualified to search for his father 151.
- Ging’s sealed metal box — Opens through Nen rather than force; contains a ring, an old microcassette, and a ROM Card 92.

- Greed Island card No. 002, “A Plot of Beach” — Awarded by Razor after the team wins his challenge 147.
- Paladin’s Necklace and two selected Accompany cards — Chosen as clear-game rewards; one card’s disguise is removed to reveal Magnetic Force, later called Magnetism 149 150.

- Mito — Caregiver whom Gon regards as his mother. He stops Ging’s recording before hearing about his biological mother because he considers Mito his only mother 92 93.
- Ging Freecss — Father and the original goal of Gon’s journey. Gon finally meets him at Association headquarters and hears about his ambition to explore the Dark Continent 8 199.

- Kurapika — Friend and protective companion. Helps retrieve Killua, warns Gon against fighting Gido prematurely, and worries about his rematch 60 83 88.
- Wing — First formal Nen instructor. Awakens Gon’s aura, imposes a recovery ban after his reckless match, and resumes teaching once Gon keeps his promise 78 84 86.
- Biscuit — Later trainer who imposes a demanding punching routine on Gon and Killua 137.
- Hisoka — Dangerous opponent fascinated by Gon’s potential; briefly cooperates with him against Razor 16 43 89 147.
- Illumi Zoldyck — Enemy whose attempts to control Killua provoke Gon’s defiance. Later plans to kill Gon to prevent Killua from using Nanika’s power 57 60 195 196.
- Canary — Initially bars Gon from the Zoldyck estate, but his persistence weakens her resolve. Gon tries to stop her bleeding after she is shot 66 67.
- Razor — Greed Island opponent and Ging’s beneficiary. Tests Gon harshly at Ging’s request and recognizes his resemblance to his father 147.
- Alluka / Nanika — Killua seeks their help when Gon is dying; Nanika restores Gon through physical contact 192 197.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Whale Island and the Hunter Exam
Gon’s reckless charge at a wild boar establishes Luo Ye’s role as his safeguard. After Mito sets the King of the Swamp challenge, the boys move from a failed fishing attempt to building better equipment. They subsequently leave Whale Island for the Hunter Exam 1 2 3 4 8.
On the voyage, Gon befriends Leorio and Kurapika and helps during the storm that serves as the Captain’s test. He meets Killua during the marathon, defeats Johnny through a tactical trick, and later steals Hisoka’s badge through a coordinated plan: Luo Ye draws Hisoka’s attacks, Killua chooses the opening, and Gon executes the cast 8 13 26 41 43 44.
In the final exam, Gon refuses to withdraw against Illumi because he wants to understand Killua’s fear. Illumi concedes after Gon defends Killua’s independence. Killua’s subsequent killing of Pokkle and disqualification cause Gon to confront Illumi and reject his own license in favor of rescuing his friend 56 57 59 60.
Retrieving Killua
At the Zoldyck estate, Gon repeatedly crosses Canary’s boundary without fighting back. His persistence unsettles her, and he later challenges Kikyo’s claim that friendship will weaken Killua 66 67.
Silva releases Killua after he swears never to betray Gon. The friends reunite with teasing and a playful punch, then leave the estate together 69 70.
Heavens Arena and Nen Training
Gon climbs the arena’s lower floors through strength, but Hisoka’s aura blocks his entry to the 200th floor. Wing’s forced awakening allows Gon to learn Ten and pass him 72 73 77 78.
Eager for a real Nen fight, Gon enters against Gido before he is ready. His defeat and broken arm lead to Wing’s two-month ban. After obeying it, Gon learns Ren, confirms his Enhancement affinity, and defeats Gido in a rematch using Gyo and a targeted strike 83 84 86 87 88.
Hisoka then challenges Gon directly. Luo Ye takes his place, proposing that victory should end Hisoka’s pursuit of Gon, and subsequently wins the match 89 90.
Ging’s Clues, Yorknew, and Greed Island
Back on Whale Island, Gon opens Ging’s box with Nen. The recording challenges him to find his evasive father, while the ROM Card directs the group toward Greed Island and Yorknew’s auction 92 93.
In Yorknew, Gon and Killua follow Troupe members hoping to claim their bounties, but are captured. Gon refuses Nobunaga’s recruitment offer and condemns the Troupe’s selective compassion. Leorio locates the boys, and Luo Ye breaks into the building and sends them to safety 109 110 111 112.
On Greed Island, Gon trains under Biscuit, delivers the decisive Rock against Razor, and excels at the clear-game quiz through genuine exploration and observation. His selected travel card takes the group to “Nigu,” where he expects Ging but instead reunites with Kite 137 147 148 149 150 151.
Chimera Ant Conflict and Near-Death Crisis
Pitou’s strength exposes the gap between Gon’s confidence and his actual readiness. He reluctantly retreats with Kite, then resolves to become strong enough to protect others. Netero makes participation conditional on a token test against Knuckle and Shoot 161 164 165 166.
Assigned with Killua to occupy Pitou, Gon later faces her attack after she finishes healing Komugi. Unable to protect both himself and Killua, he invokes a Restriction and Vow. Luo Ye stops the attack and knocks Gon unconscious, but the resulting backlash still leaves him dying 176 184 192.
Luo Ye initially expects a short recovery, but the later medical diagnosis establishes catastrophic damage beyond conventional treatment. Killua takes Gon to Alluka despite Illumi’s interference, and Nanika repairs his body and aura nodes 186 192 193 196 197.
Reunion with Ging and Departure
After recovering, Gon finally speaks with Ging at Hunter Association headquarters. On a rooftop, he recounts his adventures and asks what ambition justified leaving him behind. Ging describes the Dark Continent, and Luo Ye announces that he will sponsor the expedition 199.
Gon subsequently boards the Black Whale with Killua, Luo Ye, Shizuku, and Ging, watching the crowds below from the railing 205.
