Land of Rain Commander

Orochimaru commands Konoha’s forces on the Land of Rain battlefield. His first appearance turns an Iwagakure raid into a rout: Manda devastates the retreating troops, and the Rock Ninja lose more than half their raiding jōnin and dozens of chūnin 31.

He later coordinates a strike against Iwagakure’s largest regional supply outpost. Costly frontline offensives draw enemy troops forward, while his withdrawal of Konoha units creates a temporary numerical advantage for the attack. He also orders Root to assassinate important Sunagakure figures in the Land of Rain, disrupting their command while Konoha retaliates against Iwagakure 50.

Interest in Yechen and the Uchiha Transfer

At their first face-to-face meeting, Orochimaru attempts to pressure Yechen with killing intent, only to be briefly caught in the young Uchiha’s genjutsu. He announces Yechen’s approved promotion to jōnin and questions him about rescuing the Third Raikage. Yechen denies involvement, and Orochimaru accepts the answer without abandoning his suspicions 105.

Orochimaru initially refuses Danzō’s request to transfer Yechen and Shisui to the dangerous Kirigakure front because both are valuable to the ongoing war. Forbidden Research and Political Protection

Records recovered from Root reveal that Orochimaru and Danzō secretly continued experiments to reproduce Hashirama Senju’s Wood Release after Konoha abandoned the project. The research consumed numerous village ninja and produced the surviving Wood Release user Yamato 269.

Hiruzen declines to arrest his former student despite the evidence. Homura and Koharu accept postponing punishment, but Koharu insists that Orochimaru be excluded from the Hokage election 269 270.

After Danzō’s death and Hiruzen’s resignation, surveillance increases. Defection and Capture

Konoha forces eventually surround Orochimaru’s underground laboratory, where Yechen observes him developing Impure World Reincarnation beside a captive ninja and other test subjects 300. Hiruzen and the advisers occupy Minato with a meeting to delay direct intervention. Orochimaru breaks out, and Manda smashes through Konoha’s outer wall to carry him beyond the encirclement 301 304.

Jiraiya pursues him and attempts to persuade him to return. Orochimaru instead explains his ambition to master every ninjutsu, understand its principles, and attain immortality, defending his victims’ use as experimental subjects 310. Their confrontation becomes a battle. Recognizing that he cannot defeat Jiraiya in Sage Mode, Orochimaru secretly substitutes a Shadow Clone and escapes underground 311 317.

Yechen intercepts him before he reaches the Land of Fire’s border. Orochimaru survives their initial exchange through bodily substitution, then deploys a reanimated Danzō as a distraction 318 319 320. After Yechen destroys Danzō’s soul, he catches Orochimaru again, exposes his white-snake escape disguise, and breaks both arms. Cornered, Orochimaru offers cooperation and the prospect of immortality 321.

Gods Alliance Recruitment

Yechen values Orochimaru’s research talent but refuses to trust him freely. He uses Kotoamatsukami to bind Orochimaru’s loyalty to the Gods Alliance, appoints him an Elder, and provides laboratory space in the Nine Heavens Evolving Heaven Palace. Research receives funding, but killing subjects is forbidden and human experiments require consent 322.

Orochimaru is ordered to return to Konoha, rebuild Hiruzen’s trust, and serve as an embedded agent. Yechen hands him over to Minato, Hiruzen, and Jiraiya; Konoha confines him for a month and publicly denies that he defected 322 323. Afterward, he establishes an outside experimental base as a cover for his real palace laboratory, which Kakuzu secretly equips 324.
