Gern rose through the Marines by training his Haki, defeating powerful pirates, and pursuing justice through missions of his own. After recruiting Lipo and launching an unauthorized campaign against the Flying Pirates, he badly wounded Kozuki Oden in a duel.

Arc 1Gern's Rise to Headquarters

After gaining the Tremor-Tremor Fruit and Rocks D. Zebek’s blade at God Valley, Gern built a reputation in West Blue and fought Whitebeard. He arrived at Marine Headquarters and began training under Zephyr to master Haki and pursue his own justice.

  • Gern ate the Tremor-Tremor Fruit at God Valley, discovered its Logia power, and accepted Rocks D. Zebek’s Black Blade in exchange for burying him.
  • Gern killed Derrick after discovering he had tried to claim Gern’s death benefits, then deceived Zephyr about Derrick’s death and received a promotion.
  • Gern defeated Captain Hawk and the Golden Blade Pirates, earning the name Pirate Hunter Gern and setting his sights on Marine Headquarters.
  • Gern answered Ashport’s distress call, found its people massacred, and fought Blood Spear Logot, killing him with Heavenquake: Sky Rend.

Arc 2Gern’s Trial by Fire

Gern trained under Zephyr and Garp, developed his Haki, and set out to define justice through an independent mission. His pursuit of Doger drew Golden Lion Shiki to G-3 Base, where Gern awakened Conqueror’s Haki and drove Shiki off with help from Zephyr and Sakazuki, but collapsed from his injuries.

  • Gern debated justice with Dragon, then fought Zephyr at Marineford and pushed his Tremor-Tremor powers until Zephyr defeated him.
  • Zephyr and Garp trained Gern on Volcano Island, where he awakened and refined Armament and Observation Haki and began developing Ryuo.
  • After two years of training, Gern became a Headquarters Captain known as the Beheading Demon, and Zephyr gave him an independent mission to capture Doger.
  • Gern defeated Doger and captured the Rupture Pirates, then clashed with Davy of the Flying Pirates before delivering Doger to Sakazuki at G-3 Base.

Arc 3Heavenquake’s Rise

Gern’s fame spread after he wounded Golden Lion, and he strengthened his position in the Marines through the Elite Training Camp and a string of victories. After encountering Kuma and Ginny, he continued pursuing his plans and reached the Mokomo Dukedom, where he met Lipo-Lipo Hope.

  • The news of Gern’s slash against Golden Lion made him famous as “Heavenquake,” and Zephyr brought him to Marineford to recover and train.
  • Kong approved Zephyr’s Elite Training Camp, while Gern traveled with Garp to the East Blue and questioned Dragon about Marine justice.
  • In Sorbet Kingdom, Gern met Kuma and Ginny, challenged Kuma’s resolve, and left him a miniature Den Den Mushi while urging him not to become shackled.
  • Gern returned to Marineford and defeated Borsalino in the exhibition match by freezing him and striking him with Black Quake: God-Slaying Nail.

Arc 4Gern and the Flying Pirates

Gern recruited Lipo from the Mokomo Dukedom, then joined Sakazuki at G-3 and led an unauthorized campaign against the Flying Pirates. After their victories drew attention, Gern faced Kozuki Oden in a brutal duel that left Oden badly wounded.

  • Gern befriended the minks of Crescent Moon Village, gave Lipo a healing Devil Fruit, and left with her as his adjutant after entrusting Pedro with his Justice cape.
  • Golden Lion sought revenge over Davy’s death, and Kong sent Gern to G-3 under Sakazuki while Zephyr trained Lipo at Marine Headquarters.
  • Gern and Lipo arrived at G-3, where Sakazuki agreed to fight the pirates attacking civilians despite orders to avoid escalation.
