Gern defeated Oden, rose through the Marines, and recruited Tesoro after helping him kill Saint Charlos. On his return voyage to Marineford, Gern confronted the Roger Pirates and fought Bullet and Rayleigh.

• Gern defeated Oden in a battle that split an island, then pinned Oden with his swords as Whitebeard arrived, and a clash between the Marines and Whitebeard Pirates left Whitebeard gravely wounded before the crews retreated.
• Gern recovered, learned that Lipo’s Healing Carrot had restored him at Oden’s expense, and was promoted to Rear Admiral, and Sengoku later questioned Gern’s radical “calamity justice.”
• During his leave, Gern defeated Crocodile at Sabaody, visited Branch 133, and met Mihawk, whom he beat in a spar before setting a five-year rematch.
• Gern found Tesoro and Stella on Lilikaya, gave Tesoro a Devil Fruit, killed Saint Charlos, and recruited Tesoro into the Marines on the condition that Stella be protected.
• Gern killed a CP0 agent and blamed Charlos’s disappearance on the Bloodhand Pirates, and he arranged false Marine records for Tesoro and Stella before Kong ordered him back to Marineford.
• Gern’s warship encountered the Roger Pirates, and Gern’s Haki clashed with Roger’s before Gern defeated Bullet with one punch.
• Rayleigh struck Gern into the sea, but Gern blasted him into the air and raised a reef island for their fight, then addressed him as 'Pluton' Silvers Rayleigh.

Gern fought Roger’s crew, helped them escape Golden Lion at Edd War, and then traveled to Fish-Man Island to seek an alliance. He left after urging Fisher Tiger to confront the oppression of his people and giving Otohime hope for cooperation with humans.

• Gern battled Rayleigh at Reef Rock Island until Roger intervened and defeated him, then recovered in Sabaody as the Marines prepared to observe the clash between Roger and Golden Lion.
• Gern and Kizaru watched the Battle of Edd War, and Gern created a tsunami that wrecked Shiki’s fleet and let the Roger Pirates escape.
• After the Government proposed the Shichibukai system, Gern criticized its priorities to Sakazuki and arranged a trip to Fish-Man Island with Lipo and Tesoro.
• Gern’s coated warship crashed at Fish-Man Island, where he subdued the guards, met Neptune and Otohime, and proposed that the island fly his flag in exchange for his protection.
• At the Sea Forest, Gern examined the Road Poneglyph and challenged Fisher Tiger to confront the oppression of Fish-Men rather than retreat from it.
• Lipo’s stories about her friendships with humans strengthened Otohime’s commitment to coexistence, while Tesoro told Neptune that Gern was worth following.
• Otohime told Neptune that she trusted Gern’s group, and Gern said he would wait for the seeds he had planted to sprout.

Gern defied the World Government by killing two Celestial Dragons, then defeated Saint Figarland Garling with the Marines backing him. After capturing Byrnndi World on Hachinosu, Gern discovered the Ohara scholars’ forbidden research and let them leave, leaving Tesoro to suspect he had a deeper purpose.

• Gern killed Saint Charlos and Saint Rosward after they targeted Lipo, then returned to Marine Headquarters as the Marines refused the World Government’s demand to surrender him.
• Saint Figarland Garling came to arrest Gern and seize Lipo, but Gern defeated him in a public battle while Kong and the Marines stood behind him.
• The World Government declared Gern and Lipo innocent and ordered the public execution of Saint Rosward and his son, while Gern rallied the Marines under the call of “Justice.”
• Kong gave Gern a mission to capture Byrnndi World, and Gern sailed to Hachinosu with Lipo and Tesoro.
• Gern defeated World despite his escalating speed and strength, while Lipo and Tesoro overcame the pirate officers and helped protect civilians.
• After the Marines secured Hachinosu, Gern confronted rescued Ohara scholars and recognized the Poneglyph script in Dr. Clover’s parchment.

Gern pursued Roger and fought him for three days, ultimately bringing the defeated Pirate King to Loguetown. Roger’s arrest set the next era in motion, while he entrusted his unborn child’s safety to Garp.

• Olvia visited Gern, who revealed what he knew about the Poneglyphs and warned her that the World Government had monitored Ohara.
• As Roger became the Pirate King and disbanded his crew, Gern rose to Vice Admiral and received orders to investigate Dragon, whom he confronted during the Revolutionary Army’s assault on Nicyaro.
• Gern encountered Toritoma and the Kuja Pirates, then avoided returning to Marine Headquarters when he learned Roger’s crew had disbanded.
• Gern met Roger on Baterilla, learned he planned to surrender at Loguetown, and challenged him over the danger Roger’s pregnancy with Rouge posed to their unborn child.
