Background / History
Kaido began as an apprentice of the Rocks Pirates on Hachinosu Island. Even at that stage, he was feared as a powerful pirate, but Huayue defeated him without physical contact after Kaido challenged him over a stolen pocket watch. The humiliation became a lasting grievance; Kaido later spent over ten years seeking a way to overcome Huayue’s eye-based ability. 271 319 322
He acquired the Fish-Fish Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Azure Dragon Form, a Devil Fruit described as the strongest reward offered by the Celestial Dragons. Its power gave him his giant dragon form and became the foundation of his later reputation. 284 319
By the time he ruled Wano Country with the Beast Pirates, Kaido had deceived Kozuki Oden for five years and consolidated control through Onigashima, weapon production, and force. Oden and the Nine Red Scabbards eventually attacked him, but Kaido’s side prevailed; Oden was later dead and his retainers scattered. 314 318
Kaido also defeated Gecko Moria in Ringo with Great Dragon Thunder Bagua, killing Moria’s crew and leaving Moria a broken survivor who later relied on zombie soldiers. 305 384
Appearance
Kaido is an enormous, heavily built man with prominent horns, ox-like eyes, and an intimidating presence enhanced by his iron club and overwhelming Haki. In Azure Dragon form, he becomes a blue-scaled dragon roughly a thousand meters long. 314 415
- Large bony horns; his left horn was later visibly severed by a sword strike. 415
- Carries the iron club Hassaikai. 305
- Frequently drinks from a large sake gourd. 326
- Transforms into a colossal Azure Dragon with blue scales, massive claws, clouds, and storm-producing movement. 314 344
Personality
Kaido is fiercely proud of his strength and repeatedly asserts that he is the world’s strongest creature. Defeat does not temper this conviction; after losing to Huayue, he immediately began planning an artificial Devil Fruit user army so he could challenge him again. 319 326 356
His ambitions are explicitly world-changing and destructive. In his past encounter with King, Kaido spoke of smashing the world to pieces, and he later sought to ignite a world-spanning war through military industry, artificial ability users, and alliances. 453 356 461
He is volatile and deeply affected by perceived betrayal. He alternates between laughter, crying, and rage while drunk, mourns allies such as Hanafuza and Doflamingo, and turns murderous when Yamato rejects his plans. 442 446 447 508
Abilities & Skills
Fish-Fish Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Azure Dragon Form
Kaido’s Mythical Zoan lets him transform into a colossal Azure Dragon or a dragon-human hybrid, granting aerial mobility, destructive elemental attacks, and extreme recovery.
- Produces Blast Breath and Blazing Breath, attacks powerful enough to carve trenches and unleash sweeping fire. 446 508 512
- Flies on flame clouds and generates storms, tornados, and lightning across Wano’s battlefield. 284 314 450
- His recovery and natural physique allow him to survive injuries that would kill ordinary fighters, including severe internal damage. 451 453
- Seastone can still restrain him after defeat. 323
Haki
Kaido possesses exceptionally powerful Haki, especially Conqueror’s Haki, which he infuses into Hassaikai and his body.
- Coats Hassaikai with Armament and Conqueror’s Haki, producing black-and-purple lightning. 305
- Uses Haki as the basis of his belief that only the strongest body and strongest Haki can create the strongest creature. 321
- His direct attacks can destroy hundreds of Greater Hollows in rapid succession. 322
- His Haki-based attacks can also cause massive collateral damage, as his Fire Dragon Eight Trigrams injured King and Queen while pursuing Huayue. 323
