Background / History
Orochimaru lost his parents before the events of the story. Hiruzen recalls finding him beside their graves with the shed skin of a white snake and explaining that white snakes symbolize rebirth and longevity. This image later becomes central to Orochimaru’s language of immortality and regeneration 91.
As Hiruzen’s disciple, Orochimaru earned outstanding military achievements during the Second Great Ninja War. Hiruzen once regarded him as the successor to his teachings and the Will of Fire, but Orochimaru’s increasingly obsessive pursuit of immortality and every ninjutsu drew him toward scientific research and an alliance with Danzo 9 17.
Appearance
- Usual body: A lean, pale, long-haired man with cold, sharply defined features and light purple eyeshadow 184 186 197.
- Eyes: Serpentine vertical pupils described as black and gold 143 184.
- Hair: Black and waist-length in his usual adult appearance 186 231.
- Altered anatomy: Can extend his neck and expose hollow fangs to inject a Curse Mark 74.
- Immortality host: Reveals a youthful female face and changes to a woman’s voice after transferring bodies 188.
- Eight Branches form: A colossal pale-white serpent with eight heads and one tail 197.
Personality
Orochimaru treats knowledge as his principal ambition: eternal life would give him time to acquire every ordinary, forbidden, and secret technique and decipher the world. He is generous with teachings to talented students who share his interests, but keeps sensitive research details private. His fascination can become consuming; after receiving a valuable cellular sample, he works for three or four consecutive nights 16 51 52 188.
His patience coexists with cruelty and pride. He accepts his failed Hokage bid without visible discouragement, conducts lethal experiments on village comrades, and uses Sasuke’s hatred of Itachi as leverage. Dismissal of his Immortality Technique angers him, while Black Zetsu’s theft of his research provokes a particularly personal reaction 73 91 186 188 231.
Abilities & Skills
Immortality Technique
- Abandons an aging body and possesses another person’s body through spiritual power 188.
- Demonstrates the technique with a youthful female host rather than merely claiming theoretical success 188 193.
- Continues seeking a physique compatible with the Sharingan; immortality alone does not resolve that requirement 187.
Orochimaru-Style Substitution
- Sheds a damaged outer body and emerges with a replacement form 143 186.
- Survives Sasuke’s Kirin by tearing free of his charred, snakeskin-like exterior 186.
- Does not remove every consequence of an attack: pain from Huayue’s assault persists even after substitution 188.
Curse Marks and Resurrection
- Injects a Three-Tomoe Curse Mark through hollow fangs; Anko immediately loses consciousness from the pain 74.
- Describes the mark as a means of obtaining exceptional power and access to Sage Mode, with a stated one-in-ten chance 74.
- Preserves a route to revival within Anko’s mark. Kurenai’s Evil Sealing Method draws out a white snake from which Orochimaru re-emerges 231.
- His original physique is unsuitable for cultivating Sage Mode, according to the White Snake Sage 27.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Adapts and later perfects the forbidden reanimation technique created by the Second Hokage 128 193.
- Uses genetic material and prepared bodies to restore deceased shinobi; control talismans allow him to command the reanimated Hokage 193 231.
- Demonstrated subjects include the Third Kazekage and the First through Fourth Hokage 128 193 234.
- Huayue can interrupt the connection between reality and the Pure Land with Sage Art: Binding Way Fifty-One, Realm Severance, preventing a summoning 143.
Snake Techniques and Summoning
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Listed among his possessed abilities 9.
- Giant pythons: Used to intercept attacks, carry bodies and scrolls, and participate in the invasion of Konoha 17 73 184 191.
- Manda: Summons the enormous deep-purple python, which complains that Orochimaru has provided no sacrifice 187.
- Rashomon: Possesses the defensive gate-summoning technique and deploys Triple Rashomon against Sasuke’s Kirin 9 185.
Eight Branches Technique
- Transforms his body into a mountain-sized eight-headed serpent using chakra-rich white tissue 196 197.
- Calls it his ultimate ninjutsu and a symbol of immortality and regeneration, developed from materials Huayue provided 197.
- Fires concentrated beams from its mouths and can split flesh from its tail to attack or restrain an opponent 197.
- Its regeneration is insufficient against Huayue’s spatial sealing: six heads are sealed first, followed by the larger body and a fleeing white snake 197.
Other Ninjutsu
- Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique and Wind Release: Wind Cutter are listed in Huayue’s character check-in of Orochimaru 9.
- Uses Earth Clone to misdirect Sasuke and Earth Release: Headhunter Jutsu to seize him from below 184.
- Uses Shuriken Shadow Clone Jutsu during his confrontation with Huayue 188.
- Performs Reaper Death Seal: Release with the Shinigami mask before reanimating the four Hokage 231.
Research and Covert Operations
- Studies Hashirama-like cells and cultivates Eight-Tails flesh tissue 51 52 86.
- Produces a pale arm implanted with multiple Sharingan for Danzo 163.
- Maintains laboratories containing genetic records, reanimation resources, and collected Tailed Beast chakra 225 231.
- Removes murdered examinees’ faces to create disguise masks and infiltrate the Chunin Exams 183.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Laboratories — Research sites in Konoha and the Land of Rice Fields; the latter contains extensive forbidden-technique scrolls and specimens 73 225.
- Summoning scrolls — Includes a modified Third Kazekage reanimation scroll and scrolls containing the four Hokage’s genetic information 128 231.
- Control talismans — Inserted into reanimated Hokage to impose control 193.
- Ring of Sora — Worn on his index finger; used to enter Akatsuki’s secret base after his encounter with Huayue 188.
- Shinigami mask — Used to release the Reaper Death Seal 231.
- Prepared White Zetsu bodies — Supplied for his body transfer and the reanimation procedure 231.
Relationships
- Sarutobi Hiruzen — Teacher and former supporter of his potential succession. Hiruzen opposes his Hokage candidacy, fails to stop his defection, and later sacrifices himself while sealing Orochimaru’s hands 9 72 91 194.
- Uchiha Huayue — Prized disciple, research collaborator, and eventual superior opponent. Huayue supplies valuable specimens, defeats and seals him, and later compels his assistance against Madara 9 51 197 231 234.
- Anko — Disciple whom he forcibly marks when she refuses to leave Konoha with him. She later helps revive him but demands cooperation rather than reconciliation 74 183 231.
- Danzo Shimura — Political and research partner. Danzo supports his Hokage bid and controls authorization for Hashirama-cell research; Orochimaru supplies his Sharingan arm and cooperates in the Konoha Crush Plan 17 72 163 186.
- Jiraiya — Fellow Sannin and opponent during the invasion. Orochimaru mocks his unchanged outlook, while Jiraiya returns to Konoha after learning of his exam infiltration 186 191.
- White Snake Sage — Recognizes his unsuitability for Sage Mode. Orochimaru treats her cautiously and withdraws when Huayue summons her 27.
- Sasori — Akatsuki colleague and research rival. Their exchanges repeatedly escalate into insults over puppetry, reanimation, and their respective defeats by Huayue 128 143 167.
- Nagato — Akatsuki leader who requires him to participate in the attack on Konoha after a three-year preparation period 160 167.
- Uchiha Sasuke — Prospective recruit and desired source of Uchiha power. Sasuke rejects his offer and forces him to retreat with Naruto’s help 185 186 187.
- Black Zetsu — Takes research and Madara’s specimen from his laboratory; Orochimaru considers the theft an affront to his standing as a researcher 225 231.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Recruiting Huayue
Orochimaru offers Huayue a way off the battlefield and accepts him as a disciple, explaining that the arrangement will ease someone’s suspicions. He then recommends Huayue for the mission against Chiyo and invites him to explore the truth of the world together after his return 9 16.
His teaching gives Huayue access to snake summoning. The lesson unexpectedly brings forth the White Snake Sage, prompting Orochimaru to distance himself and assume his disciple will not survive the encounter 27.
Failed Hokage Bid and Defection
Orochimaru bribes the Land of Fire’s daimyo and council members while Danzo recommends him as Fourth Hokage. Hiruzen defeats the proposal by emphasizing Orochimaru’s lack of trust among Konoha’s jōnin and lack of support from its jinchūriki, securing Minato’s appointment instead 72 73.
Before leaving temporarily, Orochimaru forcibly gives Anko a Curse Mark. He later returns for further experiments, but Hiruzen discovers him using experienced Konoha shinobi as lethal test subjects. Hiruzen’s hesitation allows Orochimaru to kill two accompanying Anbu and escape 74 86 91.
Akatsuki and the Konoha Crush Plan
Reports place Orochimaru in Akatsuki after his defection. When the organization accepts a commission to destroy Konoha, he prioritizes an experiment requiring three more years and secures that preparation time 110 167.
He obtains the Land of Rice Fields daimyo’s approval to establish a ninja village, sends Yakumi to Danzo, coordinates with Sunagakure, and distributes a Konoha defense map through Zetsu 167 171 172.
During the Chunin Exams, he infiltrates the Forest of Death and tests Naruto and Sasuke. Their combined attacks force him to retreat. A subsequent confrontation with Huayue leaves him injured and reveals that his former disciple possesses the Rinnegan 183 184 185 186 188.
Defeat by Master and Disciple
Disguised as the Fourth Kazekage, Orochimaru launches the invasion and attacks Hiruzen. He reanimates the First and Second Hokage, but Hiruzen’s final use of the Reaper Death Seal damages his ability to use ninjutsu by sealing his hands 191 193 194.
Huayue intercepts his escape. Orochimaru unveils the Eight Branches Technique, but Huayue’s Susanoo and sealing techniques defeat both the giant serpent and the small white snake attempting to flee 196 197.
Revival and Wartime Assistance
Nagato and Zetsu loot Orochimaru’s laboratory after his defeat, taking reanimation resources and Tailed Beast chakra. Anko and Kurenai subsequently revive him and offer limited freedom under surveillance if he helps in the Fourth Great Ninja War 225 231.
Orochimaru releases the Reaper Death Seal and brings the four former Hokage to the battlefield. He presents himself as an ally acting on his finest disciple’s orders, while retaining his interest in unusual powers and research. After the war, he discusses Kara and expresses envy of the Ōtsutsuki clan’s biological means of survival and revival 231 234 244.
