Background / History

Scourge service and assassination assignment

Before joining the Scourge, Gadd specialized in fire magic and painstakingly crafted a powerful, single-use Flame Orb. He was later assigned to Scholomance, but its destruction left him stationed in Icecrown Citadel. He resented losing the opportunity to rule his own domain and having to remain an underling 331 335.

After watching Rhode’s victories through a banshee’s Magic Mirror, Gadd proposed assassinating him to deprive the Alliance army of its leader. The Lich King approved but expected Gadd to carry out the plan. Gadd tried to excuse himself by citing his lack of assassination expertise and preparations for Scholomance’s reopening. When the other senior commanders stepped backward during a call for volunteers, he was left standing foremost and reluctantly accepted the mission 331.

False surrender

Equipped with Blue Dragon Essence, Gadd spent several days concealed on a freezing mountain peak, studying Rhode’s route and waiting for a clear shot. His Blue Dragon’s Fury struck Rhode, but instead of killing him, it replenished Rhode’s mana. When Rhode approached, Gadd hastily called the attack a welcoming gift 332.

Gadd claimed he had stolen the essence and abandoned the Scourge. To make himself useful, he disclosed that the Lich King had sacrificed Sapphiron to escape the Frozen Throne’s restraints and now sought Rhode’s body and soul. He then mixed genuine information about Icecrown Citadel’s hazards with deception, hoping its cold, traps, and defenders would kill Rhode. Rhode decided to scout the citadel before the Alliance assault and required Gadd to accompany him as a guide 333.

Failed ambushes and genuine defection

Inside the citadel, Gadd repeatedly tried to attack Rhode while its guardians occupied him. He prepared a Shadow Bolt during Forgemaster Garfrost’s charge, released concealed plague during the battle with Klek and Aik, and finally launched his Flame Orb while Sindragosa confronted Rhode. None succeeded. Garfrost’s fallen fireball burned Gadd’s crotch, his plague was knocked back into the same area, and his recalled Flame Orb struck him there again 334 335.

Rhode never recognized these attacks as betrayals and instead treated Gadd as an injured ally. Meanwhile, the Blue Dragon Essence Gadd had delivered allowed Rhode to restore part of Sindragosa’s body and return her sanity. After Rhode and Sindragosa extinguished the Flame Orb, Gadd concealed his final ambush by claiming he had tried to help Rhode fight the dragon. Rhode promised him engineering assistance for his injury and personal magic lessons. Convinced that he could not defeat Rhode, Gadd genuinely committed himself to the Alliance 335.

Alliance reinforcements

When the Lich King appeared, Gadd immediately rode away on Sindragosa to request reinforcements. Rhode asked him to bring paladins whose Holy Light could protect them from the citadel’s conditions. Although fear of Frostmourne drove his haste, Gadd fulfilled the request, returning with Uther, Tirion Fordring, and Silver Hand paladins 336 338.

They arrived after Rhode had killed the Lich King. Seeing the Helm of Domination and learning of the victory, Gadd privately congratulated himself on changing sides before sharing the fate of the fallen undead 338.

Appearance

  • Age: Described as a middle-aged man 331.
  • Clothing: Wears entirely black mage robes; Rhode associates his outfit with the Cult of the Damned 331 333.
  • Distinctive equipment: Carries a skull-shaped staff strapped to his back 331.

Personality

Gadd is opportunistic, calculating, and strongly motivated by survival. He flatters those with power over him, invents excuses to avoid dangerous assignments, and quickly reframes his failed assassination as an act of surrender. His first apparent defection is tactical: he fears Rhode in direct combat but also fears the Lich King’s punishment for betrayal 331 333.

His caution coexists with persistent overconfidence. After each failed ambush, he finds a reason to believe the next will work, interpreting Rhode’s modest account of his adjustment to the citadel as proof of vulnerability. His eventual loyalty grows from both Rhode’s kindness and the recognition that further resistance is hopeless 334 335.

Gadd also values romance and physical intimacy. His attachment to Duchess Blaumeux makes him anxious about her interest in Taelan, and his desire to retain a sex life is explicitly given as a major reason he has not become a lich 331 334 335.

Abilities & Skills

Fire Magic

  • Specialized in fire magic before joining the Scourge 335.
  • Created a Flame Orb that multiplies the power of his fire spells several times over 335.
  • Once released, the orb is difficult to control; his attempt to recall it ends in severe self-injury 335.

Shadow Magic

  • Prepares a full-strength Shadow Bolt to strike Rhode from behind while Garfrost attacks from the front 334.
  • Dispels the spell when Rhode uses Blink and leaves his line of attack 334.

Plague Attacks and Resistance

  • Releases a concealed cloud of plague from the Headmaster’s Staff, intended to invade a victim’s body on contact 334.
  • Possesses enough plague resistance to survive being struck by his own poison, which he believes would immediately kill an ordinary person 335.
  • His resistance does not prevent the poison from becoming life-threatening; Rhode burns it away before it can reach his heart 335.

Blue Dragon’s Fury

  • Channels Blue Dragon Essence into a winged, dragon-shaped magical projectile approximately the size of an ordinary fireball 332.
  • The attack drains his magic and throws him more than ten meters backward through recoil 332.
  • Fails against Rhode, who absorbs its magical power rather than taking damage 332.

Citadel Knowledge and Persuasion

  • Knows Icecrown Citadel’s entrance password, routes, guardians, and environmental hazards 333 334.
  • Understands that its cold can impair living intruders’ mana recovery and casting, while Scourge members with death power are unaffected 333 334.
  • Maintains Rhode’s trust through explanations that mix truth with lies, then gains the Silver Hand paladins’ trust sufficiently to bring them into the citadel 333 335 338.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Headmaster’s Staff — Skull-shaped staff carried on his back. Contains a rarely used, concealed plague weapon; Gadd considers the staff insufficient against Rhode 331 332 334.
  • Blue Dragon Essence — Extracted from Sindragosa by the Lich King and issued to Gadd for the assassination. Rhode absorbs it and later returns its power to Sindragosa 332 335.
  • Flame Orb — Gadd’s treasured, self-made fire amplifier. A single-use item reserved for a desperate fight; expended during his final failed ambush 335.

Relationships

  • Rhode — Assassination target turned ally and prospective teacher. Rhode repeatedly saves Gadd while mistaking his failed attacks for injuries inflicted by enemies 332 334 335.
  • The Lich King — Former master who assigns the assassination and supplies Blue Dragon Essence. Gadd eventually betrays him and fears imprisonment within Frostmourne 331 332 335 336.
  • Duchess Blaumeux — Romantic attachment. She helps leave him singled out for the assassination mission and expresses interest in Taelan, provoking Gadd’s jealousy 331 334.
  • Scourgelord Taelan — Fellow senior Scourge commander and romantic rival. Avoids helping Gadd escape the assignment 331.
  • Lord Marrowgar — Fellow commander whom Gadd tries to persuade to avenge Patchwerk. Marrowgar instead argues that Gadd is better suited to covert assassination 331.
  • Sindragosa — Intended accomplice in Gadd’s final ambush, later an ally. Extinguishes his Flame Orb’s fire and carries him to fetch Alliance reinforcements 335 336.
  • Uther, Tirion Fordring, and the Silver Hand — Alliance reinforcements brought back to Icecrown Citadel by Gadd 338.
