Background / History

Transmigration and Enlistment

Sakazuki’s body was born in the North Blue in year 1467. The protagonist transmigrated into him five years before the opening chapter and obtained the Magma-Magma Fruit shortly afterward. He spent three years training and gathering information in Goa Town, followed by two years hunting pirates from his collection of bounty posters 1 42 419.

The brutality he witnessed convinced him that pirates deserved extermination. After killing Blood Ox Johnny and finishing his bounty list, he joined Marine Branch 194 on Windflower Island at twelve. He sought instructors because his independent physical training had stalled and his knowledge of the Six Powers and Haki remained largely theoretical 1.

Branch Training and Marine Headquarters

Three years of patrols and guided training established Sakazuki as a feared pirate hunter across the North Blue. Jorison recommended him for the Headquarters elite class and gave him a notebook explaining important personalities and factions 2 3.

While traveling to Marineford, Sakazuki destroyed Savage Bone Noss’s ship with Molten Flow Volcano, killing the twenty-four-million-Beli pirate and his crew before the recruits could board. At Headquarters, he demonstrated Red Lotus State and Shave against Captain Phil, then tested himself against Garp 3 4 5.

Sakazuki subsequently participated in the God Valley Incident, where he attacked Kaido and helped guide a natural volcanic eruption. He then patrolled the Four Blues, rescuing Carol from a ruined settlement during this period 10 14 24 419.

Vice Admiral and Early Alliances

Sakazuki’s patrols weakened pirate activity and strengthened civilian confidence in the Marines. His promotion to Vice Admiral in year 1486 placed him far ahead of classmates whose highest rank was still commander. Rescued civilians celebrated the appointment across the seas 29 30.

On Birka, he and Carol encountered the orphaned Enel, protected him from bullying, and explored ruins beneath the town altar with his help. Sakazuki eventually brought Enel to the Blue Sea, where Morris adopted him 48 49 419.

Sakazuki intervened against Roger’s massacre on Kegesi Island despite Kong’s instructions to arrive late and avoid a serious confrontation. Roger suffered minor injuries, while Sakazuki was gravely wounded. Afterward, Sakazuki cleared magma from underground shelters to create escape routes for surviving civilians 52 53 54 56 419.

Following Byrnndi World’s death, Sakazuki recovered the More-More Fruit, which he regarded as essential to his plans. Bullet later joined the Marines after Sakazuki’s warship entered his war-torn homeland 61 419.

Sgrily Battle and Marine Hero

During the Sgrily conflict, Sakazuki rescued Vice Admiral Kweel and fought Whitebeard across an island transformed by magma and tremors. He later pierced Whitebeard’s defenses with a Conqueror’s Haki-coated magma spear while Garp restrained him 67 69 77.

The seven-day battle destroyed more than twenty islands and killed over twenty thousand Marine soldiers. Whitebeard died, and Sakazuki remained unconscious for half a year after suffering severe injuries 419.

After recovering, Sakazuki arrested Vegapunk and other MADS researchers. He arranged technical instruction for Enel and created a long-lasting heat source for Baldimore. His involvement in defeating Golden Lion’s fleet subsequently became the basis for his promotion as the Marines’ new public hero 86 96 419.

Admiral Akainu and the Court-Plowing Operation

Sakazuki’s pursuit of Roger’s bloodline brought him into direct conflict with Garp. He blocked Rayleigh’s attack from reaching civilians who killed Portgas D. Rouge, then fought Garp as the latter attempted to reach the island 131 134.

After becoming Admiral Akainu, Sakazuki intensified the Court-Plowing Operation against pirates. To overshadow Golden Lion’s escape from Impel Down, he ordered the collection of pirate heads and appeared in deliberately gruesome newspaper photographs. The campaign frightened prospective pirates, but also spread fear of Sakazuki among ordinary people 148 151.

When Golden Lion attacked Loguetown, Sakazuki destroyed the falling island fragments and killed him with Hell Hound in Red Lotus State. He then prevented further damage from a falling landmass by creating enormous Haki-coated magma defenses 181 182.

Purges and Conflict with Sengoku

Sakazuki’s later campaigns included the torture of the captured Donquixote Family, attacks on retreating Revolutionary Army fighters, and a violent purge of Sabaody’s businesses, pirates, and officials. He also collected Devil Fruits for transport to Punk Hazard 214 235 253 263.

His treatment of the Revolutionary Army deepened his disagreement with Sengoku, who distinguished revolutionaries from pirates and regarded many of them as civilians. Sakazuki instead emphasized Marine casualties and challenged Sengoku’s authority, leading to a battle at Headquarters 270 273 275.

Fleet Admiral and New World War

Upon becoming Fleet Admiral, Sakazuki moved the Marines’ strategic center into the New World, expanded their senior command structure, and launched a worldwide draft. He detonated an End Point and threatened to destroy the remaining ones—and therefore the New World—if the Marines lost their decisive war against piracy 294 419.

The apparently balanced war was deliberately arranged. Sakazuki concealed the Marines’ true advantage, drew the Emperors’ followers into attritional fighting, and preserved teleportation and fleet-concealment capabilities for the final offensive. Meanwhile, Marine branches stopped obeying the World Government, which responded by withdrawing resources 327 339.

Sakazuki publicly executed Uta, killed senior officers of the Beasts and Red Hair Pirates, and used threats against their territories and loved ones to unsettle Kaido and Shanks. His personal victories revealed that the Marines’ advantage was much greater than outside observers had believed 315 341 343 362 364.

Final War and Legacy

Sakazuki ordered a live-broadcast Buster Call against Sabaody, destroying the archipelago and vessels attempting to escape. The broadcast also allowed Vegapunk’s satellites to locate the Four Emperors through their Den Den Mushi connections. Issho rejected the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of lives and declared his intention to leave the Marines after the war 389.

Carol’s teleportation enabled concentrated attacks on the Emperors. Sakazuki killed Shanks after Sengoku and Bullet restrained him; the final campaign eliminated all four Emperor crews and displayed their leaders’ heads at Marine Headquarters 391 419.

The retrospective timeline records the destruction of the Revolutionary Army’s leadership, the Celestial Dragons, and the World Government, followed by the Great Cataclysm and Sakazuki’s founding of the World Federal Government. After his death, Carol succeeded him and led the world toward interstellar expansion. The later Cosmic Federation continued teaching Sakazuki’s history thousands of years afterward 406 419.

Appearance

  • Exceptional childhood physique: At twelve, he was already taller and sturdier than the average adult, with a muscular build and resolute features 1.
  • Early clothing: Wore a red coat and carried a captured longsword across his back before enlistment 1.
  • Marine uniform: Wore a white uniform and a billowing coat marked “Justice,” complementing his imposing physique 3.
  • Admiral attire: Appeared at his inauguration in a red suit and heavy Admiral’s cloak 148.
  • Red Lotus State: His body becomes crimson, magma flows beneath or across his skin, and heat and smoke rise around him. Later appearances show golden light in his eyes 4 67 250.

Personality

Sakazuki’s defining conviction is that pirates must be eradicated, not rehabilitated or accommodated. His previous-life knowledge does not make him view the setting as a harmless adventure: witnessing destroyed villages and towns intensifies his hatred. He explicitly rejects the idea that pirates can speak for the world or define his justice 1 362.

His ruthlessness coexists with genuine protection of civilians and Marine soldiers. He rescues survivors, opens evacuation paths while severely wounded, and helps vulnerable children such as Carol and Enel. Many soldiers’ loyalty originates in his having saved their families or hometowns 48 49 56 387.

Sakazuki is also calculating rather than merely aggressive. He manipulates opponents into fighting each other, cultivates his public image, conceals military advantages, and exploits personal attachments to destabilize enemies. His war planning ultimately targets not only pirates but the existing political order 96 115 339 343 362.

His commitment to justice does not prevent coercion, torture, or mass killing. He threatens Demora’s family, subjects Doflamingo to repeated torture, and accepts Sabaody’s destruction despite the civilian toll. These methods alienate officers such as Issho and provoke disputes with Sengoku 214 253 273 389.

Although he projects certainty, Sakazuki later admits that he experienced fear, despair, avoidance, and three years without a clear purpose. He is initially poor at socializing and relies on Jorison’s notebook to navigate Headquarters politics 7 224.

Abilities & Skills

Magma-Magma Fruit

Sakazuki can transform into magma, generate it, shape it into constructs, and manipulate magma-covered terrain 1 36 73.

  • Elemental movement: Merges with surrounding magma or the ground and reforms elsewhere, including from magma projected past an opponent 36 68 205.
  • Explosive propulsion: Uses vents on his back, shoulders, and elbows to accelerate movement and increase striking force 54 102.
  • Weapons and restraints: Forms blades, spears, gauntlets, spiked clubs, and chains, often reinforced with Haki 52 54 102 105.
  • Large constructs: Creates magma dragons, a flying golden eagle, and giants of different sizes 69 85 112 137.
  • Civil engineering: Creates underground heat reservoirs; Baldimore’s artificial volcano was designed to warm the island for at least three hundred years, provided the kingdom installed filtration 86.
  • Limitations: Producing magma consumes stamina. Drawing from underground supplies supports larger-scale control, but seawater obstructs that control. He cannot convert water into magma 24 73 182.
Technique Application
Great Eruption Launches a gigantic molten-rock fist 2 10.
Molten Flow Volcano Throws a compressed, heart-shaped magma mass that engulfs a pirate ship 3.
Meteor Volcano Fires numerous magma projectiles into the sky for bombardment 10 77.
Rising Pit / Earthbreaker Rising Pit Raises volcanic formations and eruptions beneath an opponent 13 36.
Dog Biting Crimson Lotus Forms a giant magma hound that bites and pins a target 10.
Hell Hound Extends a magma hound attack over great distances; used to pierce enemies and destroy falling island fragments 68 181 341.
Cliff-Splitting Sword Drives an enormous magma blade upward from underground; can reshape an island into a towering blade formation 53 69.
Lava Burst Orb Produces a violent magma explosion, used at point-blank range and against retreating forces 54 205 235.
Magma Land Formation Draws underground magma outward to enlarge solid ground around an existing formation 73.
Death Burial Formation Produces waves of blade-wielding lava giants that reform after destruction; the giants have no independent minds 73.
Lava Burial Turns the ground into magma and raises successive waves hundreds of meters high 75.
Flame-Commanding Great Heavenly Demon Creates an eight-hundred-meter, eight-armed magma giant with Haki-coated arms 112.
Magma Colossus Forms a thirty-meter magma giant wielding a Haki-coated great hammer 137.

Red Lotus State

Red Lotus State circulates magma’s explosive properties through Sakazuki’s body to amplify his strength temporarily 5.

  • Combines bodily enhancement with volcanic thrust to overpower Kaido’s advancing attack 102.
  • Remains a major combat form in later battles against Golden Lion and Bullet 181 250.
  • Consumes enormous stamina; his early exchange with Garp nearly exhausts his ability to maintain it 5.

Haki

  • Armament Haki: Reinforces his body, weapons, and enormous magma barriers. It blocks Kaido’s club, breaks Ivankov’s needles, and strengthens attacks against Emperor-level opponents 10 182 235 343.
  • Observation Haki: Surveys battlefields, locates enemies, predicts landing positions, and guides attacks against fast-moving targets 9 36 103 237.
  • Conqueror’s Haki: Coats weapons, clashes with other powerful users, and immobilizes Uta during her execution 77 78 105 315.
  • Sensory limits: Raging Conqueror’s Haki can disrupt his Observation Haki. He also cannot sense Birka’s concealed altar chamber or Shanks’s presence under Observation Haki Killer, even when Shanks is visible 49 115 361.

Six Powers and Body Control

  • Shave: Uses rapid movement in his Headquarters assessment and later catches the fleeing Who’s-Who 4 341.
  • Finger Cannon: Kills Who’s-Who with an overwhelming Six Powers attack 341.
  • Life Absorption and partial Life Return: Shrinks his body and enlarges his shoulder bones to trap Roger’s saber after it cuts into his neck 54.

Strategy and Psychological Warfare

  • Political preparation: Uses knowledge of personalities and factions to establish himself among the Marine hawks 7.
  • Public intimidation: Uses newspapers, executions, and displays of pirate heads to discourage recruitment into piracy 151 182 287 315.
  • Enemy manipulation: Turns Hale Nock and Charlotte Linlin against each other and exploits Kaido’s dependence on Wano and his personal ambitions 115 343.
  • Concealed force concentration: Coordinates attrition campaigns while withholding teleportation, hidden fleets, and additional top-level fighters for decisive attacks 327 339 391.
