Background / History

Birka and Recruitment

Enel grew up without a family and had wandered for as long as he could remember. He survived by stealing apples and altar offerings, using his innate Observation Haki to avoid pursuers. Unlike the other children shown in Birka, he had no wings 45 48 49.

In Sea Circle Calendar year 1487, Sakazuki and Carol discovered him hiding in a storeroom crate aboard their warship. They fed him, washed him, and dressed him in a child-sized Marine uniform. Enel fled after becoming overwhelmed by the unfamiliar kindness, then discovered two stacks of high-denomination Extol notes hidden in his pockets 48.

The next day, Sakazuki intervened when older children cornered him. Enel subsequently guided Sakazuki and Carol to a hollow space beneath Birka’s altar that their Observation Haki could not penetrate. Inside the ruins, Sakazuki found the Rumble-Rumble Fruit and gave it to Enel because he had led them there. After eating it, Enel powered the miniature Ark Maxim found in the ruins and joined the Marines as a seaman recruit 49 50 51.

Education and Early Service

Watching Sakazuki fight desperately at Kegesi Island helped awaken Enel’s interest in justice. He soon asked to become stronger. Sakazuki arranged training through Carol, while Kong approved a general education and placed him in Morris’s care. Enel came to call Morris “Grandpa” and declared that he wanted enough strength to protect everyone, including him 55 57 58 61.

By Sea Circle Calendar year 1490, Enel was studying navigation and technology during the day and martial arts with Morris at night. He rescued Zephyr’s son from pirates, reshaped his golden weapons into a flying ark to carry the child to safety, and killed the surrounding attackers. Sakazuki encouraged him to build a scientific foundation before improving the Ark Maxim 64 65 66.

Enel later accompanied Sakazuki to Karakuri Island and began learning from Vegapunk. During their subsequent voyage, he spent more than eighteen hours a day exchanging ideas and studying with the scientist, often forgetting food and sleep 85 87 88.

Lessons in Justice

Enel initially recoiled from the scientists’ human experiments and wanted to destroy Sabaody’s slave auction house. Sakazuki taught him to consider outcomes, tolerate useful but morally compromised personnel, and prepare thoroughly before challenging the World Government. Enel accepted some of these arguments but continued to struggle with their implications 87 88 89 91.

His sharpest disagreement concerned the Note Pirates. Enel judged them to be good people and refused Sakazuki’s order to kill them. He also tried to stop Sakazuki from destroying their ship and was badly burned. Sakazuki then took him to Noss Town, where children idolized the crew’s captain, arguing that celebrating pirate heroes encouraged future piracy 90 91.

At Ohara, Enel burned Saul’s frozen body and warned Kuzan against interfering with Marine affairs. Nevertheless, he and Kuzan did not stop the fleeing Robin because neither could bring himself to kill such a young girl 147.

Research and New World Campaigns

Enel developed into both a combatant and a weapons researcher. He sparred with Borsalino, helped Sengoku fight Golden Lion, and joined Sakazuki’s campaign to seize Golden Lion’s New World territories. With Rosinante, he developed the Magnetic Field Bomb, a communications-disabling weapon Sakazuki ordered him to keep secret 100 124 132 135.

His later projects included missiles, an improved Ark Maxim, and the redesign of Pluton’s main cannon with Vegapunk. After Bullet’s More-More Fruit produced unexpectedly large results, Enel insisted on controlled testing before relying on it to amplify the cannon 191 232 258 261.

During the Navy’s internal split, Enel fought Kuzan and helped Borsalino and Luo separate Bullet from Garp. He then departed Headquarters with Sakazuki’s faction. Sakazuki entrusted him and Luo with arranging cooperation with Kaido, which Enel defended as a practical exchange rather than a contradiction of Marine policy 275 276 277 278 279.

That cooperation did not prevent violence between the factions. Enel wiped out the pirates on Fegara Island while fighting King, then attacked Onigashima’s arms factories. Kaido ambushed him with Haki-infused lightning, prevented his elemental transformation, and nearly killed him. Enel destroyed every factory before his defenses failed; Borsalino’s intervention allowed him to survive 288 289 290 291.

War Against the Red Hair Pirates

Commanding his own fleet, Enel captured seven islands within a few days before encountering Shanks’s defensive line. His magnetic-field perception let him detect Shanks despite the latter’s Observation Haki Killer. Their ensuing aerial battle ended without a decisive winner, although Shanks inflicted serious wounds 300 301.

Enel subsequently fought alongside Bullet against the Red Hair Pirates. After Bullet tore off Yasopp’s arm, Enel burned it to ash before it could be saved and mocked the crew as the “Severed Arm Pirates” 318.

He also tested an experimental airship fleet, supplying its cannons through wireless magnetic-field energy transmission. After delivering the ships to Egghead, he was assigned to guard supply routes alongside Kuzan and prepare to intercept the Red Hair Pirates 351 352.

Headquarters later lost contact with him as Shanks’s crew mobilized to surround and kill him. He reappeared when Carol teleported him to their ship, where he joined the attack that ended with Sakazuki killing Shanks and the destruction of the crew’s leadership 383 391.

Great Cataclysm and Later Fate

During the final battle, Enel forced moon-covering lightning into Pluton’s charging chamber while Bullet operated the amplified cannon. The energy severely damaged his body. Believing himself responsible for Sakazuki’s death, Enel lost his composure and desperately reached for an illusory image of him 405.

Afterward, Enel searched the magma and sea obsessively, extending his Observation Haki across tens of thousands of meters. He became nearly skeletal and refused Carol’s demand to stop. Carol eventually subdued him and brought him to the seawater prison so Vegapunk could arrange rest 407 408.

Enel gradually accepted Sakazuki’s death but remained cold and consumed by killing intent. He killed Tesoro and every one of his men during the attack on Slave Island 410.

In Sakazuki’s alternate future timeline, Enel spends half his life fighting among the stars without resolving his grief. He returns to the moon, watches the Red Line on the blue planet below, and dies in despair 419.

Appearance

  • Childhood: Wingless, thin-armed, and initially dressed in tattered clothes; Carol gives him his first new Marine uniform 45 48.
  • Early Marine service: Nearly 160 centimeters tall when Sakazuki sees him after an absence of more than half a year; described as handsome in uniform 66.
  • Build and accessories: Well-proportioned rather than bulky, with gold ornaments worn around his wrists and ankles 100 223.
  • After Sakazuki’s death: Temporarily becomes almost skeletal and deathly pale. Following recovery, he remains thinner than before, with an expressionless, gloomy face and an oppressive presence 408 410.

Personality

Enel begins as a proud, suspicious child who hides vulnerability behind insults and boasts. He denies needing Sakazuki and Carol’s kindness, yet treasures his new uniform and cries when they care for him. The prospect of being left behind on Birka frightens him, while his recruitment produces immediate joy 48 49 51.

His early ambition is protective: he wants to become strong enough to defend others. He is also intensely curious and studious, devoting long days to scientific education. His insistence on testing the More-More Fruit’s actual behavior shows that his enthusiasm for powerful weapons is paired with concern for their operating limits 61 88 258 261.

Enel is informal and teasing around familiar people. He imitates Borsalino’s drawn-out mockery, needles Sote and Luo, and casually lounges beside Sakazuki. In combat, that playfulness becomes contemptuous taunting 80 225 238 318.

His moral outlook hardens considerably under Sakazuki. The boy who refused to kill the Note Pirates later accepts tactical cooperation with Kaido, dismisses pirate casualties, and embraces overwhelming firepower. His loyalty to Sakazuki remains deeply personal; losing him turns that attachment into obsession and lasting despair 91 175 232 279 288 405 410 419.

Abilities & Skills

Rumble-Rumble Fruit

Enel generates, controls, and transforms into lightning, using the fruit for movement, offense, defense, and energy production 50 51 65.

  • Travels through the air as lightning and rapidly reforms to strike from different directions 85 301.
  • Selectively transforms threatened body parts, allowing attacks to pass through him 268 275.
  • Forms lightning weapons and compressed explosives, including spears, arrows, blades, and large thunderballs 65 300 301.
  • Powers the Ark Maxim and an experimental airship fleet 51 351.
  • Stronger Haki can interrupt his elemental transformation; Kaido binds him with Haki-coated lightning, while Shanks disrupts him with outward-projecting Haki 289 290 301.
  • His flesh-and-blood body can still feel an electric shock before his ability activates and absorbs it 238.

Observation Haki and Magnetic-Field Perception

Enel’s innate Observation Haki is unusually extensive even before he receives his Devil Fruit. Combining it with electromagnetic waves greatly increases its reach 48 55.

  • Tracks people and attacks over broad areas; his perception can trigger a defensive transformation without conscious activation 268 407.
  • Detects Shanks’s magnetic field even when Observation Haki cannot sense him 300 391.
  • Uses wide-area perception to prevent enemies from escaping his lightning bombardments 288 410.
  • Powerful energy disturbances can disrupt magnetic-field perception, creating an opening for Shanks 301.
  • Birka’s hidden ruins block the sensing ability; Enel discovers them through the sound of a hollow slab rather than Haki 49.

Thunder Metallurgy and Stored Electricity

Enel melts and reshapes gold through electrical heat, turning the same material into weapons, armor, ornaments, and machinery 65 100 289 290.

  • Reshapes the Golden Staff into daggers, a trident, a saber, shields, and a miniature Ark Maxim 65 289 290 300.
  • Remotely retrieves golden spikes and small gold beads 121 268.
  • Stores highly compressed lightning inside gold without melting it; every gram of his ornaments eventually holds substantial electrical energy 268.
  • Uses charged droplets and needles as explosive projectiles. The needles deployed on Onigashima can devastate a hundred-meter radius each 290.
  • His cultivated gold reserves take years to prepare and can be permanently lost when expended 290.

Storm Techniques and Thunder God Form

Enel draws on thunderclouds to produce large-scale attacks and giant lightning avatars. The Rumble-Rumble Fruit cannot itself create thunderclouds; the Ark Maxim’s generator supplies them 66 132.

Technique Documented application
Judgment Calls down lightning to kill the pirates surrounding Zephyr’s son 64.
Thunderbolt Spear Forms explosive spears capable of sinking ships or annihilating groups of enemies 65 288.
50 Million Volts: Thunder Dragon Creates a lightning dragon that destroys a Haki-coated mist lion, redirects toward Golden Lion, and detonates to intercept a slash 132.
200 Million Volts: Thunder God Wraps gathered lightning around himself to form a hundred-meter avatar 132 138.
Thunder God Descends: Judgment Descends with a giant lightning pestle to force Golden Lion toward the ground 132.
Thunder God Descends: Ten-Thousand Mamaragan Prison Converts planted lightning pestles into chains and a hemispherical net that restrain Golden Lion 132.
Thunder God’s Judgment Combines his lightning attack with Sengoku’s Buddha Shockwave 132.
Raigo Condenses thunderclouds into an enormous destructive sphere; Enel attempts to maximize its effect by sinking it into an island before detonation 66 138.
Mamaragan-Raigo Creates an island-sized thundercloud sphere that rains lightning and descends over the battlefield against Kuzan 275.
  • Thunderclouds provide favorable terrain for rapid repositioning and replenishing his avatar’s energy 301.
  • Strong Haki can resist his current, break his restraints, or destroy lightning constructs even when they are reinforced with Armament Haki 132 301.
  • Lightning is not solid enough to shield soldiers behind him from Hale Nock’s surging steam 301.

Haki and Physical Combat

Enel supplements his fruit with martial arts, weapon combat, Armament Haki, and Conqueror’s Haki coating 66 276 290.

  • Reinforces golden shields and weapons with Armament Haki 289 300.
  • Coats the Golden Staff in Conqueror’s Haki when clashing with Kaido 290.
  • Uses lightning-speed approaches to deliver Haki-coated strikes with blades, fists, and legs 301.
  • Combines electrical stimulation with Life Return to temporarily knit a broken arm, at the cost of visibly thinning his body; full healing still requires time 290.
  • Remains outmatched in Haki strength by Kaido and Shanks 290 301.

Science and Engineering

Enel studies navigation, technology, and weapons development under Morris and Vegapunk 66 88.

  • Magnetic Field Bomb: Developed with Rosinante; disables nearby Den Den Mushi and is classified as a strategic secret 124.
  • Missiles: Builds weapons favored by Bullet, though further upgrades require better equipment and supplies 191.
  • Super Ark Maxim: Improves the original design with Vegapunk and identifies room for batteries sufficient to support at least two Raigo attacks and several Mamaragan attacks 191.
  • Pluton main cannon: Redesigns and optimizes the weapon with Vegapunk, accounting for Bullet’s More-More Fruit amplification and stamina limits 232 258 261.
  • Airship fleet testing: Supplies wireless power through magnetic-field conversion and collects combat data from its energy cannons. The fleet lacks a suitable independent energy source and depends on him as a “portable power bank” 351.
  • Caesar’s research: Exchanges ideas on mass-destruction weapons and follows up on a virus that fails to spread in freezing temperatures 175 215.
