| Wind-born White Dragon | 121 166 | Born from dragon factor leaking from Albion’s remains, embodying Albion’s wind. The White and Red Dragons share an origin and stand at the pinnacle of Britain’s Phantasmal Species. |
| Acquisition of the Red Dragon’s fire | 1 135 | Took the Red Dragon’s fire during their early battle. Its physical form, a crimson crystal, enabled him to wield thunder—the form of fire closest to wind. |
Meaning and Classification
“White Dragon” denotes a prophetic symbol, an actual Divine Beast, and the bloodline inherited by Sovell. Vortigern’s original epithet and the creature possessing him are not interchangeable 21 35 37.
| Usage | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Prophetic symbol | Represents hostile foreign peoples and the King of the Wicked, opposing the Red Dragon’s sacred King of Radiance 22 35 37. |
| Vortigern’s epithet | Originally a derogatory title earned through his conflict with Uther and collusion with foreign peoples—not evidence that he was a dragon 35. |
| White Dragon of Britain | The real Divine Beast that possesses Vortigern and seeks Britain’s destruction 37 121. |
| White Dragon bloodline | The draconic inheritance carried by Sovell, a human–White Dragon hybrid 38 160. |
- Phantasmal Species are ranked Demon Beast → Phantom Beast → Divine Beast. Dragons occur in all three ranks and are the strongest creatures within each 22.
- The White and Red Dragons both belong to the highest rank, Divine Beast, rather than ordinary true dragons or lesser sub-dragon species 22.
- The mature White Dragon exceeds the usual mature Divine Beast in every attribute. The narration describes him as arguably Britain’s strongest creature, possibly Europe’s; ordinary wyverns are compared to insects beside him 120.
Background / History
Origin and the Red Dragon
The White and Red Dragons were born in Britain through the influence of the being known as Albion. The author’s explanation identifies them as manifestations of dragon factor leaking from Albion’s remains: the Red Dragon embodies fire, while the White Dragon embodies wind. Their shared origin makes them brothers in a sense, but they are natural enemies 121 166.
Merlin first witnessed them beneath Vortigern’s proposed fortress. After the pool containing them was drained, the dragons awakened and fought. The White Dragon initially gravely wounded the Red Dragon, but the latter’s final assault drove him away 1.
The battle left both severely injured. The White Dragon nearly died, yet took the Red Dragon’s fire in the form of a crimson crystal. He subsequently became the executor of Britain’s will to destroy itself, while the Red Dragon surrendered its flesh to become Artoria’s protective dragon factor 121 135.
Creation of Sovell
The White Dragon conceived Sovell as an experiment intended to combine humanity with his own bloodline and create a humanoid weapon or pawn. Taking human form, he raped a human woman, who died giving birth to the white-haired child 38.
He abandoned the infant in a Demon Beast Forest, deliberately arranging for Vortigern to discover him while hunting. Vortigern instead raised Sovell with genuine care, allowing him to develop values contrary to his creator’s intentions 38 159.
Possession of Vortigern
The White Dragon took control of Vortigern’s body and mind, becoming the being behind the current Vile King. Sovell later described this domination as having lasted twenty years 121 132.
His use of foreign peoples to provoke war served Britain’s destruction, not a sincere ambition to unify or govern the island. Why he required Vortigern’s body, delayed completing his objective, and brought the Saxons to Britain remained questions raised by Artoria and Sovell 121.
Appearance
- Early revealed dragon form: A white dragon hundreds of yards long, unveiled within Merlin’s bounded field of flowers 37.
- Unrestrained true form: Nearly two thousand meters long, with enormous wings, silver-white scales, and utterly black slit pupils 127.
- Storm-charged form: His silvery scales darken and acquire pitch-black patterns as he gathers black clouds 128.
- Vortigern’s body: Can manifest scales, claws, wings, and spikes at the shoulders and elbows while retaining the human body 126 132.
- Armor: Wears black armor while occupying Vortigern 126 127.
Personality
The White Dragon is arrogant, savage, and contemptuous of humanity. He considers humans weak and regards the Red Dragon’s decision to abandon its body for their sake as foolish 121 127.
He treats Sovell as property rather than a son, calling him “raw material,” a “defective product,” and a failed weapon. When Merlin explains that Vortigern won Sovell’s loyalty through parental care and companionship, the White Dragon laughs at the idea that affection could turn his offspring against him 38.
His pride also becomes a combat weakness. Being pressured by Sovell and Artoria enrages him, causing mistakes that accumulate until they can immobilize his foreclaws and strike his heart 131.
Abilities & Skills
Dragon Might
His draconic aura exerts overwhelming psychological pressure on lesser creatures 21 22.
- In his true form, a glance brings civilians to their knees and makes experienced Round Table knights tremble 127.
- His superior bloodline strongly suppresses Sovell, his own descendant 127 128.
- Artoria resists this suppression more effectively because her Red Dragon bloodline shares his origin while opposing him 128.
- His presence terrifies wind elements themselves, preventing them from attacking him 128.
Dragon Core and Magical Energy
The dragon heart generates magical energy through breathing, sustaining attacks that would exhaust ordinary combatants 1 21 37.
- His heart supports a continuous stream of dragon breath during his confrontation with Merlin 37.
- Unlike Gawain, he can sustain prolonged exchanges of magical firepower without relying on a finite human reserve 129.
- He can transfer his heart into another body: when pressed against Sovell’s chest, it dissolves into silvery-white light and enters him 132.
Transformation and Possession
He occupies Vortigern’s body while retaining the ability to manifest his draconic nature 37 121.
- Can transform individual limbs into scaled claws without abandoning the human form 126.
- Can reveal a colossal full dragon body 37 127.
- Suppresses Vortigern’s consciousness, although Vortigern briefly breaks through near their death 132.
Strength, Scales, and Regeneration
His physical power and defenses exceed those of an ordinary mature Divine Beast 120.
- Easily throws Sovell into Artoria and knocks both Artoria and Gawain away 126.
- Blocks Gawain’s Holy Sword with his scaled arm; the resulting cut heals within seconds 126.
- Uses his enormous body like a mobile fortress, forcing opponents to evade even without elemental bombardment 131.
- His size reduces his turning speed relative to Sovell’s movement and magecraft 129.
Wind and Storms
The White Dragon embodies Albion’s wind and commands immense storms 128 166.
- Wingbeats unleash gales and thunderbolts 127.
- Gathers black clouds to obscure the sun, interfering with Gawain’s sunlight-dependent blessing 128 129.
- Creates a barrier of wind and lightning to delay incoming Holy Sword attacks 129.
- His wind manipulation is crude compared with Sovell’s. His effective immunity to Sovell’s wind attacks comes from intimidating the elements, not superior technical control 128.
Dragon Flame and Thunder
He breathes scorching Dragon Flame, including a pitch-black form capable of consuming opposing magical attacks 37 129.
- Black Flame gradually overwhelms Carnwennan’s Solar Flare during the combined assault 129.
- His shared origin with the Red Dragon explains his ability to breathe Dragon Flame 135.
- The stolen crimson crystal enables thunder, but he cannot freely wield other forms of fire 135.
- He is not immune to fire or light: Solar Flare chars his fingertips, and Rhongomyniad burns and strips his scales 38 129.
Magma-Fed Black Beam
He lifts weapons, corpses, and building rubble into the air, compresses and melts them into magma, then swallows the mass before firing a pitch-black beam 128.
- Directs the beam at civilians outside the Royal City, forcing Sovell and the knights to defend them 128.
- Abandons the attack when Artoria threatens him with Excalibur 128.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Crimson crystal — The physical manifestation of the Red Dragon’s stolen fire; permits his use of thunder. He returns it to Artoria immediately before dying 132 135.
- Black armor — Armor worn through Vortigern’s body; draconic spikes pierce it during partial transformation 126 127.
Relationships
- Albion / Primordial — Origin of the dragon factor that produced him; the White Dragon embodies Albion’s wind 166.
- Red Dragon — Shared-origin counterpart and natural enemy. Their opposition extends from their first battle to their conflicting roles in Britain’s fate 1 121.
- Vortigern — Possessed host and Sovell’s adoptive father. Vortigern’s care undermines the White Dragon’s intended use of Sovell 38 121.
- Sovell Pendragon — Biological son, experimental weapon, and eventual opponent. The White Dragon ultimately forces his heart into Sovell 38 132.
- Artoria Pendragon — Enemy and bearer of the opposing Red Dragon factor; fights alongside Sovell in the final battle 121 128 131.
- Merlin Ambrosius — Witness to the original dragon battle and the mage who exposes his possession of Vortigern 1 37.
- Gawain — Opponent whose Solar Flare demonstrates that the White Dragon remains vulnerable to fire 129.
Story Role / Major Arcs
| Arc | Events |
|---|---|
| Confrontation on the road to Cornwall | Sovell recognizes a genuine White Dragon aura in Vortigern, initially assuming that his father has acquired dragon power. Merlin exposes the possession, and Rhongomyniad wounds the dragon before he retreats, promising to reclaim Sovell 35 37 38. |
| Obstacle to Britain’s unification | Even after the Pendragon court controls most of Britain, the White Dragon remains the principal obstacle to assured victory 120. |
| Battle of Londinium | Overwhelms Sovell, Artoria, and Gawain in the Royal Palace. After the palace is destroyed, he reveals his full dragon form and attacks the evacuating population 126 127 128. |
| Combined Holy Sword assault | Counters amplified Holy Sword attacks with storms, lightning, and Black Flame. Gawain exhausts himself and is knocked out of the battle 129. |
| Defeat | Sovell and Artoria exploit his mounting mistakes, pin his foreclaws with magical blades, and allow Sovell to drive Rhongomyniad through his back toward his heart 131. |
| Final act | After Vortigern briefly regains control, the dying dragon reasserts himself, forces his heart into Sovell, and returns the crimson crystal to Artoria. Sovell transforms and attempts to stop the resulting crisis by piercing his own heart with the fully unsealed Rhongomyniad 132. |
Bloodline and Legacy
- Sovell’s dragonification: White Dragon blood enables scales, claws, horns, wings, and a tail, but can also produce destructive frenzy. Merlin suppresses one outbreak through dreams anchored in Sovell’s memories of Artoria 19 35 164.
- Resonance with Artoria: Sovell’s White Dragon bloodline strengthens Artoria’s Red Dragon Core through their long companionship 161.
- Holy aversion: Britain’s hostile legends about the White Dragon contribute to Sovell’s instinctive aversion to Longinus’s holy aura, despite his admiration for Jesus 74.
- Strengthened companions: Long-term nurturing and assimilation with the White Dragon factor raise Barghest’s and Kelpie’s capabilities to levels comparable with Divine Beast-class dragons in specified attributes 167.
- Mordred’s creation: Her alchemical body is built upon the shell of a White Dragon reproductive cell. Her predominantly Red Dragon factor resists Sovell’s suppression, while a trace White Dragon factor creates a weak resonance that helps her fatal backstab succeed 170 205.
- Changed symbolism: Through Sovell’s heroic reputation, the white dragon becomes a source of national and ethnic pride alongside Arthur’s red dragon for Wales and the Celtic people 159.
Notable Quotes
“Next time, I will reclaim that defective product.” 38
“As long as you two live... Britain can have no future.” 132
Trivia
- The author identifies the White Dragon’s true debut as the possession reveal, rather than the earlier prophetic references or Vortigern’s symbolic title 163.
- The connection between Albion’s wind and the White Dragon was developed during writing. An earlier plan treated wind merely as Sovell’s magecraft attribute; another abandoned plan made the Red and White Dragons the last descendants of separate related lineages 166.
