Background / History
Kay is the only son of Ector Senor. Artoria, whom Ector raised as his daughter, grew up alongside him and regards him as her elder brother. Kay is three years her senior, and the two had been sparring for ten years by the time they began traveling with Sovell 23 24 30.
Before drawing Caliburn, Artoria publicly lived as “Artoris,” Ector’s adopted son, and served as Kay’s squire. Their quiet family life was among the memories that sustained her resolve to become Britain’s king 25 26.
Appearance
- Roguish charm: Sovell describes Kay’s attractiveness as roguish, explicitly using the word as a compliment 31.
- Heraldic identification: His shield bears Sir Senor’s Lion’s Head Emblem, which allows Tristan to recognize his connection to Ector 45.
Personality
Kay is protective of Artoria without ultimately denying her independence. Although distressed by her decision to become king, he accepts her resolve and publicly swears fealty. He later tests Sovell’s strength because he wants proof that Sovell can protect her 26 30.
His bluntness frequently becomes teasing or provocation. He questions Sovell about his closeness to Artoria, calls him his brother-in-law, and deliberately embarrasses his sister. Ector criticizes his manners after comparing him with the more courteous Sovell 27 29 31 44.
Kay can acknowledge both defeat and poor judgment. After losing their spar, he accepts Sovell’s helping hand and praises the winning maneuver. When confronted with soldiers’ atrocities, he initially considers their swift deaths too lenient, but accepts Sovell’s argument against torture and helps bury a murdered child 31 32.
He takes a pragmatic view of diplomacy. Unlike Artoria, he has no objection to seeking an alliance when Ban and Bors are most desperate for assistance, reasoning that aid offered for political benefit should secure a worthwhile return 50.
Abilities & Skills
Sword-and-Shield Combat
Kay’s coordinated sword-and-shield techniques earn him the name “Kay the Tactician.” Sovell considers his fighting skills among the finest possessed by Britain’s knights 30 32.
- Uses his shield offensively as well as defensively, combining it with sword attacks to create disarming opportunities 30.
- Compensates for inferior strength through technique; his coordination between both hands substantially exceeds Sovell’s during their spar 30.
- Nearly disarms Sovell several times, forcing him to interrupt his own attacks and withdraw his weapon 30.
- Loses when Sovell deliberately shortens his grip, traps Kay’s shield, pulls him off balance, and pins him beneath the Wind King Shield 31.
Jousting and Horsemanship
Kay competes in the lance tournament before Artoria’s selection as king 24.
- Sovell praises his mounted charge as textbook and compares his form favorably with Orkney’s cavalry 24.
- Rides Joanie during the group’s travels and supplies spare riding tack when Sovell attempts to tame the sea Kelpie 26 44.
Swimming
Kay’s swimming ability supports his title “King of Swimming.” He reaches an apparent drowning victim at a speed described as inhuman 43.
- Immediately volunteers to swim out when Sovell’s rescue magecraft fails 42.
- Requests a Water-Repelling Wind Shield Pearl for the victim, rather than because he needs assistance swimming the distance 43.
- Recognizes the Kelpie’s deception and attempts to use the pearl to escape, but its tail knocks the item away 43.
- His swimming skill does not protect him from the Kelpie’s superior underwater capabilities; Sovell must retrieve him 43.
Magical Energy and Physical Limits
- King Beast jerky replenishes Kay’s energy and increases his strength, but its concentration causes a nosebleed and leaves him overcharged 30 31.
- Experiences discomfort when entering England because of the drop in ambient magical energy 32.
- Remains physically weaker than Sovell’s dragon-blooded body even when Sovell refrains from magical reinforcement 31.
- Is stunned by Sovell’s Dragon Roar during the Kelpie rescue; Sovell subsequently clears his airways and uses a Calming Spell to dispel the effect 43.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Longsword and scabbard — Carried at his waist; he plants the sword in the ground as the witness to his oath of fealty 26.
- Heraldic shield — Bears Ector’s Lion’s Head Emblem and serves as both a defensive tool and a disarming weapon 30 45.
- Armor — Removed before his attempt to rescue the apparent drowning victim 43.
- Joanie — His beloved mount, a mare from Ector’s household and the finest horse at Saynor Manor after Aite 26 29.
- Spare saddle and bridle — Originally intended for Joanie; lent to Sovell for the sea Kelpie’s first taming attempt 44.
- Water-Repelling Wind Shield Pearl — Temporarily supplied by Sovell for the coastal rescue; knocked from Kay’s hand by the Kelpie and dispersed into wind 43.
Relationships
- Artoria / Artoris Pendragon — Foster younger sister and sovereign. Formerly his squire, she receives his public oath of loyalty after drawing Caliburn. He remains protective of her while repeatedly teasing her about Sovell 26 30 31 44.
- Ector Senor — Father. Ector entrusts Joanie to Kay and Artoria for their journey and reproaches Kay for lacking Sovell’s politeness 27 29.
- Sovell Pendragon — Traveling companion and prospective brother-in-law in Kay’s teasing. Kay initially questions whether Vortigern’s son can be trusted, challenges him to prove his ability to protect Artoria, and later praises his victory in their spar 27 30 31 44.
- Merlin — A family acquaintance who held Kay when he was little and arranges the companions’ travels. Kay openly criticizes his public deception surrounding Artoria’s selection 27.
- Tristan — Initially an attacker who tests the party with wind arrows, later a close friend during their half-year stay in Cornwall. Kay’s unhappiness at their farewell is visible despite his silence 45 50.
- Sea Kelpie — Initially attempts to prey on Kay by posing as a drowning person. He reluctantly supplies tack for her taming but remains unwilling to swim alongside her afterward 43 44.
- Barghest — Sovell’s demon hound. She knocks Kay over when he nearly attacks Sovell for sleeping beside Artoria, and later objects to his complaints about Sovell’s dangerous companions 42 43.

Trivia

- The narration jokingly introduces him as “the king of swimming, like a swordfish,” then immediately retracts the description; his swimming title is used again during the Kelpie rescue 35 43.
