Background / History
Obito was a poorly performing Ninja Academy student who dreamed of becoming Hokage. His classmates mocked him with the nickname “Mr. Two-in-Intelligence.” Kakashi was his childhood friend and rival, Minato Namikaze was his teacher, and Rin was the girl he loved 17 64 102.
During the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, half his body was crushed by a boulder while he was saving a comrade. He entrusted his left Sharingan to Kakashi, along with the promise to protect Rin. Madara subsequently repaired his damaged body with Hashirama cells 17 64 104.
Rin’s death became the turning point in his life. After reading the Uchiha Stone Tablet, which Black Zetsu had altered to present Infinite Tsukuyomi as the path to peace, Obito committed himself to Madara’s Eye of the Moon Plan. He later acknowledges that his obsession prevented him from investigating the inconsistencies in Madara’s plan and Black Zetsu’s actions 105.
His actions included the Nine-Tails’ Rampage, the deaths of Minato and Kushina, participation in the Uchiha Clan Massacre, and the instigation of the Fourth Shinobi World War. Although Black Zetsu manipulated the circumstances surrounding Rin’s death, the narrative distinguishes that manipulation from Obito’s responsibility for his subsequent choices 102 103.
Appearance
Obito initially conceals himself beneath a black robe and an orange spiral mask with one exposed eye 17.
- Scarred right face: Deep creases and scars remain from the boulder injury and Madara’s repairs 64.
- White Zetsu arm: His right arm is formed from White Zetsu tissue. After Chiya destroys it, he appears with a newly attached prosthetic 17 20 61.
- Damaged disguise: Chiya cracks or shatters his mask during successive confrontations. He later wears bandages, half a mask, and a torn Akatsuki robe stained with blood and sand 20 61 64 65.
- Six Paths form: White matter covers his body, horns emerge from his forehead, and nine black Truth-Seeking Orbs float behind him. His eyes are shown as one purple and one red 90 96.
Personality
Obito presents himself as a detached strategist who treats people as pieces on a board. He regards Itachi’s corpse as a broken tool rather than a person deserving sympathy, and he uses Madara’s identity and an artificially deep, authoritative voice to intimidate others 17 18 19.
His recruitment method exploits hatred and despair. He offers Infinite Tsukuyomi as a world without war or death, where lost loved ones and unfulfilled desires can be restored through dreams. This is the same approach he previously used with Nagato and Kisame 18.
Beneath that controlled persona, Rin is his most vulnerable emotional attachment. Chiya repeatedly provokes him by attacking his motives, exposing his identity, and invoking Rin’s wishes. Obito responds with tears, rage, reckless attacks, and attempts to escape rather than hear further criticism 17 19 64.
After losing the Ten-Tails’ power, he finally recognizes the harm he has caused and apologizes to Kakashi. His remorse does not immediately eliminate his hostility toward Chiya—he still attempts a suicidal Kamui attack—but his final act is protective rather than destructive 102 103 104 109.
Abilities & Skills
Kamui
Kamui is Obito’s principal Mangekyō Sharingan ability, transferring his body or other targets into an alternate dimension 17 20.
- Hollowfication: Transfers parts or all of his body into the alternate dimension, allowing blades and other physical attacks to pass through him 17 20.
- Spatial travel: Appears and disappears through spiraling vortices, including near-instant repositioning behind opponents 7 20.
- Contact capture: Attempts to pull Chiya into the Kamui Dimension by touching him 20 64.
- Attack transfer: His final use redirects falling rocks and the shock waves of Madara’s strike away from Kakashi 109.
- Materialization weakness: He must become tangible to make physical contact or attack. Chiya repeatedly targets this transition 19 20 64.
- Resource cost: Intensive hollowfication and repeated attacks consume substantial chakra and mental energy 20.
- Vulnerable dimension: Chiya’s flames can burn through space and pursue him into Kamui’s refuge. Later, Chiya seals the dimension against Obito’s remaining ocular power 23 105.
Wood Release
His White Zetsu tissue and Hashirama-cell modifications support Wood Release attacks 17 64 88.
- Cutting Sprigs: Produces sharp wooden spikes from his arm for impalement 17.
- Hellish Rampage: Raises twisted, thorn-covered trees around an opponent 20.
- Compressed weapons: Forms a black rod from densely compressed Wood Release chakra 20.
- Limit against Chiya: Chiya burns his trees and spikes away with Ryūjin Jakka or Shakkahō 19 20.
Fire Release
- Majestic Destroyer Flame: Expels an enormous fireball described as powerful enough to burn down an entire forest 17.
Izanagi
Izanagi rewrites an unfavorable event at the cost of blinding a Sharingan 23.
- Obito sacrifices a spare Three-Tomoe Sharingan to erase the spatial crack and golden flame that have followed him into the Kamui Dimension 23.
- The technique allows him to escape Chiya’s pursuit, but does not restore his confidence or remove the consequences of his defeat 23.
Six Paths Power
Absorbing the Ten-Tails grants Obito a higher-level combat form with flight, Yin-Yang Release, Truth-Seeking Orbs, and extraordinary regeneration 90 96 97 98.
- Truth-Seeking Orbs: Reshapes the orbs into supersonic black spikes. They are described as weapons capable of erasing ninjutsu 97 98.
- Expansive Truth-Seeking Orb: Creates a massive annihilating attack powerful enough to destroy a nation; its approach warps space and disintegrates matter 98 99.
- Regeneration: Survives being cut in half as Hashirama cells and Yin-Yang Release matter attempt to reconnect his body 97.
- Emotional instability: His reaction to Kakashi’s suffering destabilizes his Ten-Tails chakra. A later breakdown causes him to lose control to the Ten-Tails’ instinctive consciousness 97 100.
- Limits: Chiya destroys or vaporizes his orb attacks and ultimately extracts the entire source of his Six Paths power 98 102.
Strategy and Manipulation
- Uses Madara’s name, mannerisms, and reputation to conceal his identity and claim authority 17 18 19.
- Recruits disillusioned shinobi by presenting the Eye of the Moon Plan as salvation 18.
- Commands 100,000 White Zetsu and works with Kabuto to field reincarnated fighters 66 68.
- Attempts ambushes, visual obstruction, and attrition against Chiya, but fails to overcome his speed, perception, and endurance 20.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Orange spiral mask — Conceals his identity; repeatedly damaged or destroyed by Chiya 17 20 61 64.
- Akatsuki robe — Black cloak patterned with red clouds, later left torn and bloodstained 65.
- White Zetsu prosthetic arm — Replaces the right arm destroyed in his first battle with Chiya 61.
- Spare Sharingan — Collected during the massacre; one implanted Three-Tomoe eye is sacrificed for Izanagi 23.
- Nagato’s Rinnegan — Recovered before his transformation into the Ten-Tails jinchūriki 90.
- Six Paths Staff — Black weapon formed from a Truth-Seeking Orb; partially broken after Chiya cuts him in half 90 97.
- Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — A major resource for his plan, stolen by Chiya and later returned to his possession before the Ten-Tails’ emergence 66 68 90.
Relationships
- Rin — His childhood love and the center of his obsession with an ideal dream world. Remembering her desire to protect the village and end war ultimately contributes to his remorse 17 64 100 102.
- Kakashi Hatake — Childhood friend, rival, and trusted comrade; recipient of his left Sharingan. Their bond survives profound betrayal and culminates in Obito’s final protection and transfer of Dual Kamui 17 102 103 109.
- Minato Namikaze — Former teacher whom Obito later causes to die during the Nine-Tails’ Rampage. Minato had previously defeated him through Flying Thunder God’s speed and tactics 17 23 103.
- Kushina Uzumaki — Minato’s wife, whose death Obito admits responsibility for in his apology to Kakashi 103.
- Madara Uchiha — Repairs his body, guides the Eye of the Moon Plan, and supplies the identity he impersonates. A cursed seal connects Madara’s soul to Obito as a safeguard for Madara’s resurrection 64 105 106.
- Black Zetsu — Secret collaborator and manipulator. Obito eventually recognizes that his own obsession and Madara’s ambitions served Black Zetsu’s larger conspiracy 105 108.
- Uchiha Itachi — Intended pawn whom Obito planned to guide into Akatsuki after the massacre. Obito later attempts to retrieve his eyes from Konoha 17.
- Nagato — A recruit influenced by Obito’s promise of salvation. After Nagato’s death and the loss of his Rinnegan to Chiya, Obito reports the failure to Madara 18 65.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Opportunistic wartime ally. Kabuto offers reincarnated fighters and Madara in exchange for obtaining Sasuke, leaving Obito resentful but dependent on his assistance 64 68.
- Chiya Uchiha — Principal enemy who exposes his identity, dismantles his plans, and strips away his powers. Chiya deliberately keeps him alive long enough to provoke a war that gathers the Five Great Nations 17 61 102 104.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Konoha’s Upheaval and First Defeat
- Appears beside Itachi as “Tobi” and recognizes that Danzo’s death has disrupted the night’s intended events 7.
- Enters Konoha’s morgue to recover Itachi’s eyes, only to encounter Chiya, who identifies both Kamui and the man behind the Madara disguise 17.
- Offers Chiya membership in Akatsuki and explains the Eye of the Moon Plan. Chiya rejects both the organization and Obito’s promised dream-world peace 18.
- Loses his right arm after Chiya provokes him into attacking while tangible. The ensuing battle pits Kamui’s defense against Flash Step’s speed 19 20.
- Retreats after Chiya’s flames overwhelm the battlefield and penetrate his alternate dimension. He uses Izanagi to sever the pursuit, then flees to the Land of Rain 21 23.
- Chiya’s system rewards the confrontation with beginner space-time talent and a Kamui Fragment, extracted from Obito’s severed arm and spatial fragments 21.
Akatsuki’s Collapse and Madara’s Return
- Reappears with a replacement White Zetsu arm, but Chiya overpowers him and reveals that he has preserved Obito as a suitable instigator of war 61.
- Attempts another contact-based Kamui ambush. Chiya intercepts the materialization, shatters his mask, and again breaks his composure by invoking Rin 64.
- Retreats to Kabuto and orders him to summon Madara through Impure World Reincarnation 64 65.
- Accepts Kabuto’s reincarnated army despite the demand for Sasuke, having lost Akatsuki’s strongest living fighters and key resources 68.
War Against Chiya
- Appears before the Five Kage and declares war specifically on Chiya rather than the Five Great Nations. He presents his White Zetsu army, reincarnated warriors, and Madara as his remaining advantages 66.
- Watches Madara fight and prepares to intervene if the reincarnated body proves insufficient 88.
- Recovers the Rinnegan and the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, then absorbs the Ten-Tails. Chiya deliberately allows the transformation because he wants its energy for Ryūjin Jakka’s upgrade 90.
- Stabilizes as Six Paths Obito, but Chiya cuts him in half and destroys his Truth-Seeking Orb attacks 96 97 98.
Defeat, Remorse, and Interrogation
- Breaks down when confronted with Rin’s wishes and his own responsibility for the war, losing control of the Ten-Tails 100.
- Has all Ten-Tails essence extracted by Chiya and is left barely able to move. He recognizes his wrongdoing and approaches Kakashi to apologize 102 103.
- Attempts to free Kakashi from the black rods, but Chiya intervenes, drains his left-eye Kamui power, and demonstrates superior control of the stolen ability 103 104.
- Makes a desperate suicidal attack against Chiya, who throws him into Kamui’s dimension and seals it 104 105.
- Under interrogation, reveals Black Zetsu’s alteration of the Uchiha Stone Tablet and manipulation of Madara’s plan. Chiya also detects Madara’s chakra entering him through the cursed seal 105 106.
Final Protection and Death
- Protects the immobilized Kakashi from falling rocks and Madara’s shock waves with one final Kamui, burning away his remaining chakra and life essence 109.
- Apologizes again and entrusts Kakashi with protecting the village and world Rin cherished 109.
- Transfers complete Dual Kamui ocular power and his accumulated understanding of the technique into Kakashi’s eyes 109.
- Dies as his body dissolves into golden motes. Chiya does not intervene: he regards Obito’s crimes as unforgivable, but respects his final protective choice 109.
