Background / History

Kakashi was Minato Namikaze’s student and Obito Uchiha’s teammate. During the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, Obito was crushed beneath a boulder while saving a comrade and entrusted his left Sharingan to Kakashi, along with the responsibility of protecting Rin 17 24 104.

Rin was subsequently captured by Kirigakure and made the Three-Tails’ jinchūriki. To protect Konoha, she deliberately threw herself onto Kakashi’s Lightning Blade. Her death remained a source of grief and guilt for Kakashi, compounded by Obito’s later crimes and his own inability to stop his former friend 19 100.

Chiya identifies Kakashi as his former Anbu senior. Following the destruction in Konoha, Kakashi dealt with surviving Root members, rescued people from the rubble, and helped maintain order 24 33.

Appearance

  • Silver hair and a face mask, both visible during his vigil at Konoha’s Memorial Stone 91.
  • Usually listless eyes, which sharpen with resolve when he accepts the Acting Hokage position 24 91.
  • Forehead protector covering his transplanted eye, lifted to reveal his Mangekyō Sharingan before battle 93.
  • Red conical Hokage hat bearing the character for “fire”, worn after his appointment as Sixth Acting Hokage 91 92.
  • Crimson Mangekyō Sharingan in both eyes after receiving Obito’s final gift 109 110.

Personality

Kakashi’s concern for others repeatedly places him at odds with Chiya’s brutality. He protests that Sasuke is still a child and accepts responsibility for him because remaining with Kakashi offers the boy a chance to survive. His rescue duties later prevent him from giving Sasuke constant attention 24 33.

Despite understanding Chiya’s overwhelming advantage, Kakashi accepts the Acting Hokage position and continues fighting after the other Kage can no longer resist. His fear during Obito’s attack is not principally of dying, but of losing the world Rin sacrificed herself to protect 91 97 99.

His feelings toward Obito combine resentment, grief, and enduring affection. Obito’s apology brings no relief because it cannot restore the dead, yet Kakashi still tries to plead for his life. After Obito’s final sacrifice, Kakashi accepts Chiya’s authority and commits himself to preserving the surviving shinobi world 102 103 109 110.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

Kakashi uses his ocular abilities for battlefield observation and spatial targeting 22 94.

  • Analyzes lingering chakra traces in the aftermath of Chiya’s battle with the Masked Man 22.
  • Tracks opponents and identifies techniques, including Madara’s use of Izanagi 95 117.
  • Cannot reliably follow combat at Chiya and the enhanced Raikage’s speed; his visual focus is insufficient to target Kamui during their exchange 95.

Kamui

His original Kamui creates a distortion directly at a target’s spatial coordinates, transferring it into an alternate dimension without physical contact 97.

  • Offensive use: Attempts to shear off Chiya’s head by focusing the distortion on his neck 92 94 97.
  • Tactical use: Plans to obstruct Chiya’s retreat while the Raikage delivers the main attack 95.
  • Activation limit: Requires a brief period of visual focus, leaving it vulnerable to opponents faster than his targeting process 92 95.
  • Ocular backlash: Chiya’s superior spatial and ocular power repeatedly cancels the technique; the final counter destroys Kakashi’s Mangekyō 94 95 97.

Dual Kamui

Obito’s final transfer grants Kakashi the complete paired ability and the knowledge needed to control it 109.

  • Hollowfication: Makes himself intangible to escape the Black Rods pinning him to the rock wall 110.
  • Teleportation and attack transfer: Receives full control of both applications through Obito’s inherited ocular power 109.
  • Defensive preparation: Enters hollowfication and prepares to divert Madara’s Yin Release lightning 114.
  • Spatial limits: Cannot interfere with Kaguya’s Amenominaka; her dimensional control greatly exceeds his own 125.

Lightning Blade and Movement

  • Lightning Blade: The technique onto which Rin deliberately threw herself to prevent the Three-Tails from threatening Konoha 19.
  • Body Flicker Technique: Uses it to arrive at the ruins after Chiya’s confrontation with Obito 22.

Tactics and Leadership

  • Coordinates a combined Kamui-and-Raikage assault while accounting for the lack of a second opportunity 95.
  • Represents Konoha at the emergency meeting in the Land of Iron 91 92.
  • Reads the Empire’s Founding Charter and later joins its Governing Council 138.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kunai and ninja-tools pouch — Carries conventional shinobi weapons during the confrontations with Chiya 86 93.
  • Forehead protector — Covers his transplanted Sharingan before he exposes it for combat 93.
  • Acting Hokage hat — Presented by Shikaku when Kakashi accepts responsibility for Konoha 91.
  • Uchiha Clan Fire Release Secret Technique Scroll — Given to him by Chiya to help prepare Sasuke for a future confrontation 31.

Relationships

  • Obito Uchiha — Former teammate and closest friend; donor of both his original Sharingan and his eventual Dual Kamui. Their bond survives profound resentment over Obito’s crimes, ending with Obito sacrificing his remaining life to protect him 17 102 103 109.
  • Rin Nohara — Her self-sacrifice beneath his Lightning Blade leaves lasting guilt. Protecting the world she died for remains central to his resolve 19 99 100.
  • Minato Namikaze — Teacher whose instruction and sacrifice Kakashi remembers when accepting the Acting Hokage position 24 91.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Assigned pupil and protective responsibility. Kakashi objects to Chiya’s treatment of him, but village rescue work limits his ability to care for him before Sasuke leaves with Chiya 24 31 33.
  • Chiya Uchiha — Former Anbu junior, later adversary and sovereign. Chiya defeats and deliberately humiliates him, then heals him after Kakashi submits 24 97 110.
  • Might Guy — Offers comfort during Kakashi’s mourning and vows to prepare to protect him, even considering the Gate of Death against Chiya 91.
  • Shikaku Nara — Persuades him to become Sixth Acting Hokage, citing his experience, reputation, and strength 91.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Konoha’s Collapse and Sasuke’s Guardianship

Kakashi witnesses Hiruzen’s five-nature assault against Chiya, then investigates the devastation left by Chiya’s battle with Obito. Finding Sasuke beside Itachi’s headless corpse, he recognizes that Konoha’s balance of power has changed 11 22.

Chiya appoints him Sasuke’s jōnin instructor and later gives him the Uchiha Fire Release scroll. The arrangement is short-lived: while Kakashi is occupied with rescue work and public order, Chiya returns and takes Sasuke away 24 31 33.

Sixth Acting Hokage and the Land of Iron

After Jiraiya’s death and Tsunade’s capture, Kakashi accepts leadership of Konoha and attends the emergency Kage meeting. He supports fighting rather than surrendering, presenting Kamui as their remaining chance to kill Chiya 91 92.

His attacks fail against Chiya’s superior power. In his final attempt, Kamui is destroyed along with his Mangekyō, and a reiatsu beam pierces his shoulder and pins him to a wall. Chiya deliberately keeps him alive to distress Obito 94 95 97.

Obito’s Death and Submission to Chiya

Kakashi witnesses Obito’s collapse, apology, and punishment while remaining immobilized. Obito ultimately uses his last Kamui to divert debris and shock waves away from him, then transfers Dual Kamui and asks him to become Hokage before dissolving 103 104 109.

Kakashi escapes through hollowfication and formally submits to Chiya. Chiya heals him, and Kakashi takes his place beside him as a guard 110.

Final Battles and Imperial Government

Kakashi helps prepare defenses against Madara and is transported into Kaguya’s dimensions with the other surviving leaders. His spatial expertise lets him recognize the danger of her techniques, but he cannot counter her dimensional shifts 111 114 121 123 125.

After returning to the Land of Iron, he participates in the transition to Chiya’s rule. At the coronation, he reads the Founding Charter and is subsequently appointed to the Governing Council entrusted with imperial affairs during Chiya’s departure 134 138.
