Background / History
Information broker aboard the Endless Train
By the time Tiantian introduced him to Zhao Xun, Whistle was an established veteran player and information broker. He had spent ten days living in Car Three and gathered information about most players in the first three cars. Even many high-ranking players treated him courteously because they might need his services 43 44.
Whistle collected information about newcomers as well as veterans, reasoning that seemingly minor details might become useful later. His prices depended on whether he already possessed the requested information or needed to investigate it 44 138.
Zhao Xun’s parents and the revenge contract
Zhao Xun showed Whistle a photograph of his adoptive parents. Whistle reported that both were dead, although he only vaguely recognized the mother and initially believed he had seen her in a portrait. Zhao Xun then commissioned him to determine the true causes of their deaths 44 45.
Instead of requesting ordinary payment, Whistle asked Zhao Xun to help kill an unnamed enemy. He had made similar arrangements with several other players, hoping that at least one would become strong enough to succeed. Their agreement was formalized through a binding special-item contract 45.
Whistle eventually established that Zhao Xun’s adoptive father had died in a Dream Game, probably while protecting his wife. His investigation into the mother took longer: searching for a supposed painting led him in the wrong direction until an unexpected information fragment revealed a better lead 198 247.
Revenge against Demon
Whistle identified Demon as the player responsible for torturing Zhao Xun’s adoptive mother to death. He then revealed that Demon was also his own enemy: someone he cared about had suffered the same fate and become one of Demon’s puppets. Whistle admitted that he had deliberately emphasized Demon’s cruelty to strengthen Zhao Xun’s desire for revenge, without exaggerating the facts 247 248.
The person Whistle wanted to free was A Le, a woman whose [Fire Control] had reached lv4 before her death. Because his own ability was not combat-oriented, Whistle could not defeat Demon himself. Zhao Xun promised to free A Le in exchange for everything Whistle knew about their enemy 249 251.
Whistle supplied intelligence on Demon’s puppets, equipment, and the method of releasing his victims: Demon’s blood had to enter a puppet’s mouth while he was still alive. He also obtained a special mirror for Zhao Xun and investigated a newly acquired defensive bracelet, exhausting himself severely in the process. Zhao Xun refused to let him accompany the attack, arguing that his presence would hinder the plan 250 251 252.
Whistle’s intelligence allowed Zhao Xun to prepare a targeted attack and catch Demon off guard. Zhao Xun freed A Le and his adoptive mother, then returned A Le’s body to Whistle. Hearing that she had been glad he was alive and had thanked him for securing her release, Whistle broke down in tears and promised Zhao Xun a favor in return 258 259 263.
White Cat’s blackmail
Demon’s death automatically dissolved Whistle’s other revenge contracts. White Cat, one of the contracted players, inferred that Demon had been the target and suspected Whistle had uncovered a way to kill him 277.
White Cat threatened to publicize Whistle’s ability to expose powerful players’ weaknesses, potentially turning other passengers against him. Whistle agreed to provide one piece of information for free and continued to regard White Cat as someone unlikely to betray him. Zhao Xun warned that compliance could invite further demands and agreed to allow only this one concession 277 278.
Investigating ways off the train
To repay Zhao Xun, Whistle investigated Death God’s movements and the possibility of leaving the Endless Train. Death God’s caution and isolation made progress slow, but Whistle eventually confirmed that he had disappeared from the train several times and decided to investigate Car One for further clues 263 264 329.
When Zhao Xun moved into Car One, Whistle used his ability to confirm that he ranked third. Zhao Xun subsequently disclosed that Death God was the [Train Conductor] and that serving as his subordinate allowed temporary departures for missions. Unable to reveal the full details of his own role, Zhao Xun directed Whistle toward Ice, another subordinate, as a possible source of information 331 332.
Appearance
- Pinkish-purple hair: Whistle dyes it himself with dragon fruit purchased aboard the train 44 170.
- Attention to his hair: He frequently smooths his bangs or touches his hair, drawing attention to its unusual color 44 138 198.
Personality
Whistle is outgoing, inquisitive, and fond of teasing. At their first meeting, he questioned Zhao Xun about his dislike of physical contact and teased Tiantian about their shared secrets. He readily describes people as friends even when Zhao Xun and Tiantian reject that label 43 138.
His curiosity is tempered by a strong instinct for self-preservation. He withdrew a question about Death God’s real name rather than risk learning something dangerous, and generally avoided Car One unless he had a specific reason to go there 139.
As a businessman, he dislikes unprofitable deals, appreciates straightforward customers, and adjusts his charges to the difficulty of obtaining information. He was particularly pleased by Wu Wei’s willingness to treat him to lunch and pay without bargaining 44 45 138.
A Le’s fate exposes a much more vulnerable side of him. Investigating her torture left him with recurring nightmares and painful memories. His desire to release her soul drove him to recruit stronger players, surrender valuable equipment, and push his information-gathering ability to the point of physical exhaustion 248 250 252 263.
Abilities & Skills
[Wi-Fi Signal Tower]
Whistle’s special ability gathers information fragments and underpins his work as a broker. Its prerequisite involves gossip-loving curiosity, making it particularly suited to him 199.
- Investigative uses: Locates players, checks rankings, reconstructs past events, and uncovers details about special abilities and items 248 251 252 331.
- No direct combat function: It provides neither offense nor defense, but advance knowledge helps Whistle recognize threats and avoid risks 199 249.
- Daily strain: The ability advises against investigating more than fifteen fragments per day. This is not an absolute cap; exceeding it strains the body 199.
- Mental-power cost: Older, more complex, and deeply concealed information consumes more mental power 248.
- Dependence on search direction: Broad or mistaken assumptions can waste investigations, as happened when he searched for a painting of Zhao Xun’s mother 247 263.
- Incomplete coverage: During preparations against Demon, he admitted that he had not identified the abilities of at least two-thirds of the players in the first three cars 250.
- Copying restriction: Zhao Xun secretly acquired the ability through [Devour], but could not use it because he lacked its required curiosity 199.
Information Brokerage
- Pricing: Existing information costs less than information requiring a fresh investigation 44.
- Payment: Accepts equipment as well as favors; Wu Wei paid with a handgun and two spare magazines 45 138.
- Verification: Reports confirmed findings while distinguishing uncertain conclusions, such as the probable circumstances of Zhao Xun’s adoptive father’s death 198.
- Discretion: Avoids routinely exposing players’ abilities and weaknesses, preserving his reputation as a useful rather than threatening passenger 251 277.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Contract parchment and quill: A special item used to create binding agreements signed with a bloody thumbprint. Violating the written terms carries a severe penalty 45.
- Zhao Xun’s obligation would activate after Whistle completed the investigation and Zhao Xun’s points reached or exceeded the enemy’s 45.
- The agreement remained valid even if Whistle died after completing his task 45.
- A slower-progressing signatory could become subordinate to another contracted player who reached the required points first 45.
- The parallel revenge contracts dissolved automatically after Demon’s death 277.
- Incense: Prevents outsiders from overhearing private conversations; frequently used during discussions with Zhao Xun 248 264 332.
- Special mirror: Obtained through an information trade and given to Zhao Xun for the revenge operation. Zhao Xun used it to release Demon’s puppets and make them attack him 250 259.
- Handgun and ammunition: Received from Wu Wei with a loaded magazine and two fully loaded spares as payment for information 138.
- Portable stools: Keeps stools in his System Storage Slot and brings them out for lengthy conversations 198 247.
- Phone: Holds a photograph of A Le, which he showed Zhao Xun so she could be identified during the confrontation 251.

- Su Tiantian / Tiantian — Acquaintance who introduced him to Zhao Xun. Whistle calls her his friend, although she does not acknowledge the label; her openly malicious moods frighten him 43 45 138.
- A Le — A woman he deeply cared about and sought to free from Demon’s control. Their precise relationship is not specified 249 251 263.
- Demon — Enemy responsible for A Le’s torture, death, and imprisonment as a puppet. Killing him and releasing A Le were Whistle’s central revenge objectives 248 249.
- Wu Wei — Customer introduced by Zhao Xun. Whistle appreciated his manners and supplied information about the surviving veteran Volunteers 137 138 139.
- White Cat — Former revenge-contract signatory who later blackmailed Whistle into providing free information 277 278.
- Death God — Dangerous veteran and subject of Whistle’s investigation into departures from the train. Whistle avoids approaching him carelessly 139 264 329.
- Ice — Identified by Zhao Xun as another subordinate of the [Train Conductor] and a potential lead for Whistle’s investigation 332.
Related Incidents
- Fake Whistle: Zhao Xun identified a masked information seller as a likely impersonator after the man supplied false intelligence to Instructor Wu. Unlike the real Whistle, this seller concealed his face with a baseball cap and mask. Su Tiantian later reported killing the fake Whistle 170 317.
