History
Rouge Pavilion Debut
Lu Mian first appears as the featured courtesan at the Rouge Pavilion in Moon Wheel City. Guests praise her before she takes the stage, and even Qian Chongling is momentarily captivated by her eyes. She performs on a guqin while other courtesans dance, leaving the audience absorbed in a dreamlike trance 77 78.
Under the pavilion’s debut rules, the ten highest bidders qualify for selection, but the courtesan chooses her guest herself. Bidding for Lu Mian begins at 150,000 Gold Soul Coins. Dai Tianyue ultimately offers an inscribed folding fan and 2.99 million Gold Soul Coins, and she selects him 78 79.
Dai Tianyue’s Replacement
Lu Mian receives Dai Tianyue in her private room, playing the zither and pouring him wine. When Ye Mengwei appears and confronts him, Lu Mian remains composed. Her lack of surprise helps Dai Tianyue realize that she already knows their identities 79 80.
The encounter becomes the setting for Dai Tianyue’s replacement: Chen Chuan uses Soul Transference to place Dai Yeyu’s soul into his body. Lu Mian is present afterward when Qian Chongling discusses her training with Ye Mengwei. Three days later, her boudoir serves as the meeting place where the group coaches the replacement on imitating Dai Tianyue’s mannerisms 82 84.
Marriage
Lu Mian’s role as a false princess consort develops into a genuine marriage with Dai Yeyu under Dai Tianyue’s identity. Ye Mengwei complains that her formerly obedient disciple and her husband have become inseparable 218.
Zhu Zhuqing later credits “Aunt Lu Mian’s” supervision with reforming her fourth uncle from a libertine into a responsible man who commands an entire region 237.
