Background / History
Family and succession
Leng Yaozhu’s mother died early, leaving her father and younger sister as her closest family. Her father repeatedly pressures her to marry and produce an heir because the Leng Family’s main line is dwindling. She initially refuses an arranged marriage and considers taking a disciple instead 29 54 55.
As head of the Spirit Pagoda’s second-ranking family, she controls substantial holdings but lacks a promising blood-related successor. Her father rejects the idea that an unrelated disciple can reliably preserve the clan’s legacy. Resources allocated after she became the designated family successor helped her cultivation overtake that of her more talented younger sister, Leng Yulai 54 55 142.
Alliance with the Netherworld Order
Old Master Leng joins the Netherworld Order’s Elder Hall after personally experiencing its lifespan-extending power. Teaching and protecting Xu Qingjia become part of the Leng Family’s obligations under that arrangement. Her father instructs her to remain within one li of him around the clock 54 55.
Leng Yaozhu accepts because she cannot watch her father die of old age. She also recognizes the political stakes: powerful Federation elders depend on Xu Qingjia’s ability to extend their lives, binding the Leng Family’s security to his survival 55.
Teaching Xu Qingjia’s group
Leng Yaozhu welcomes Xu Qingjia into her residence at Spirit Pagoda Headquarters and asks him to call her Aunt Leng, explaining that she is his mother’s longtime friend. Alongside her existing disciple Gu Yue, she undertakes the protection and cultivation of Xu Qingjia, Ye Xinglan, and Na’er 55 56 59.
She later gives Xu Xiaoyan a one-month trial before deciding whether to accept her formally. Xu Qingjia, in turn, shares his spiritual cultivation method with her and permits its transmission to Gu Yue and, upon admission, Xiaoyan 88.
Academy appointment and Federation politics
By the three-year time skip, Leng Yaozhu holds the nominal position of vice principal at the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy. This appointment allows her students to represent the academy in its competition against Shrek. She condemns Shrek’s use of prohibited substances and worries about the academy’s dignity being placed at risk 90 93 98.
Following the attack on Shrek City, she returns to Spirit Pagoda Headquarters to oversee affairs and cooperate with the Federation. The Leng Family faction subsequently helps the Federation pressure Shrek while contesting the Qiangu Family’s influence inside the Spirit Pagoda 118 120 121.
Fire poisoning and the Heavenly Phoenix pact
While supervising Xu Qingjia’s ice-and-fire body tempering, Leng Yaozhu intervenes when his internal balance shifts. Fire poison travels back through her Heavenly Phoenix fire and enters her meridians and soul core. The ordeal awakens Ultimate Fire; Xu Qingjia uses an antidote and extreme cold to counter the poisoning 138 139.
Afterward, Xu Qingjia greatly extends her lifespan through the Book of Life and Death. Their relationship becomes romantic, though Leng Yaozhu remains conflicted about being both his teacher and his mother’s best friend. They agree to keep it secret and announce their marriage only after he becomes the strongest person in the world, reaffirming an earlier promise she had originally made to humor him 60 139 140.
Appearance
Leng Yaozhu is a tall woman with fair skin, delicate features, and an appearance repeatedly likened to a proud, fiery phoenix 55 83 144.
- Hair: Waist-length, pinkish-red hair, worn loose or loosely pinned up 55 142.
- Eyes: Distinctive phoenix-shaped eyes 54 55.
- Usual clothing: Fitted long dresses, including a white dress embroidered with a fiery phoenix and red or burgundy dresses 55 81 134.
- Bearing: Combines a commanding professional presence with a gentler manner at home 83 134.
Personality
Leng Yaozhu is protective, affectionate, and attentive to her students without excusing their mistakes. After Gu Yue’s bathroom misunderstanding with Xu Qingjia, she accepts responsibility for failing to explain the living arrangements and insists that Gu Yue apologize. She also intervenes when Gu Yue’s teasing of Na’er threatens to escalate 59 81.
She respects personal boundaries and does not demand access to her students’ private techniques or investigate the origins of their treasures. In matters of affection, she believes choices should come from the people involved, intervening only if events threaten to take a seriously harmful turn 57 89 137.
Her assessment of her own teaching is notably modest. She openly credits Xu Qingjia’s physical achievements to his talent, perseverance, and training rather than her instruction, and rejects the idea that she deserves lasting fame merely because he might become a god 119 120.
Abilities & Skills
Heavenly Phoenix Fire
Her fire-attribute Heavenly Phoenix martial soul grants precise control over flames, later elevated to Ultimate Fire 137 139.
- Dries Xu Qingjia and Gu Yue’s bodies and clothing without harming them 59.
- Uses finely controlled Phoenix Fire in cooking 137.
- Limit: The Infernal Delicate Apricot’s fire poison can enter her body through the connection created by her own flames; possessing a matching attribute does not make her immune 138.
Spatial Movement
As a Limit Douluo, Leng Yaozhu uses her mastery of spatial laws to move almost instantaneously 54.
- Reaches the Spirit Pagoda Headquarters entrance in a single flash 54.
- Deploys her Battle Armor and disappears to investigate a nearby disturbance 74.
- Leaves a cultivation room with only a faint ripple of space 142.
Spirit Domain Realm Perception
Her spiritual power allows detailed sensing of auras, energy changes, and activity within cultivation rooms 81 137 138.
- Detects Na’er’s sudden bloodline change 81.
- Monitors multiple students simultaneously while they absorb powerful treasures 137.
- Observes changes in Xu Qingjia’s internal ice-and-fire balance 138.
- Limits: She cannot fully explain the Netherworld aura she investigates, and her perception does not automatically reveal Xu Qingjia’s dormant physical qualities 74 101.
Cultivation Assessment and Guidance
Leng Yaozhu evaluates students through spiritual perception and controlled circulation of soul power through their bodies 57 81 134.
- Identifies Na’er’s increased blood essence and offers an ancestral-bloodline explanation for it 81.
- Recognizes Xu Xiaoyan’s guaranteed-effect starlight restraint and incomplete ancestral martial soul reversion 88.
- Recommends absorbing soul bones before immortal herbs to strengthen the body and soul-power reserves 137.
- Explains that entry into the Spirit Domain Realm requires commanding elements through spiritual power alone 142.
- Limit: She acknowledges providing little specialized guidance for Xu Qingjia’s physical cultivation 119.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Four-Word Battle Armor — Her established combat equipment, manifested when she investigates the unfamiliar Netherworld disturbance in Eastsea 55 74.
- Hundred-thousand-year Cockscomb Phoenix Sunflower — A fire- and phoenix-aligned spirit treasure gifted by Xu Qingjia. She accepts it as a debt to the Xu Family and postpones refining it until her students finish cultivating safely; its absorption is not shown in the provided chapters 137.
- Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear palm bone — An external soul bone she placed as a Spirit Ascension Platform guardian reward. She relocates the guardian to thwart Qiangu Dongfeng’s attempt to secure it for his grandson, then recommends the prize to Xu Qingjia to improve his close-combat options 84 85.
Relationships
- Xu Qingjia — Student, protection charge, and later secret romantic partner. He gives her a spiritual cultivation method, extends her lifespan, and renews their conditional marriage promise 55 60 88 139 140.
- Shen Xi — Longtime best friend and Xu Qingjia’s mother. Shen Xi entrusts her with his care but explicitly warns her against becoming romantically involved with him 55 88 120.
- Old Master Leng — Father and former family head. His need for lifespan extension brings the family into the Netherworld Order alliance; his repeated demands for marriage also shape her succession concerns 54 55.
- Leng Yulai — Younger sister, originally more talented in cultivation. Her whereabouts and survival are uncertain to Yaozhu early on; later narration identifies her as an Evil Soul Master who remains below the Limit Douluo threshold 55 142.
- Gu Yue — Disciple whom she affectionately calls Yue’er. She values Gu Yue’s exceptional elemental control and requires her to take responsibility for mistakes 57 59.
- Na’er and Ye Xinglan — Students under her cultivation supervision and protection. She assesses their abilities, mediates disputes involving Na’er, and safeguards their treasure absorption 56 57 81 137.
- Xu Xiaoyan — Initially accepted for a one-month trial; subsequently included among her students. Leng Yaozhu recognizes the unusual potential of her stellar martial soul 88 93 135.
- Qiangu Dongfeng — Institutional rival. She resists his encroachment on Spirit Pagoda authority and deliberately prevents his grandson from obtaining the external soul bone 84 121.
