Background / History
Earth and the Golden Horned Beast
Chen Ao survived Earth’s apocalypse and spent decades developing his abilities largely without instruction. Over fifty years, he secretly rescued more than eight million people and settled them in a corner of Australia. His rescues included over a million people believed to have been swallowed by the Golden Horned Beast 1 30.
Despite being strong enough to eliminate the beast, he refused Hong and Lei’s request to fight it. Knowing that Luo Feng’s possession of the Golden Horned Beast was a crucial opportunity, he avoided disrupting that outcome. Before Hong and Lei departed, he warned them to protect the heroes’ families; Luo Feng later credited this warning with keeping his own family safe 1 2.
Chen Ao initially remained on Earth because he lacked an independent route into the universe and considered travel dangerously unsafe. Luo Feng, Hong, and Lei eventually brought him a Virtual Universe sensor, giving him access to the cultivation knowledge he had been waiting for 1 2.
Virtual Universe and the Genius Battle
Unable to meet the requirements for Immortal lectures, Chen Ao attended World Lord lectures on space law for more than two years. He offered Luo Feng the first Black Metal Plate of the Nine Tribulations Secret Manual for one Hunyuan Unit, then purchased Thousandfold Combat Power and Space Cleave to improve his practical technique 3 4 5.
He entered the Genius Battle as Ao Li Gei, wearing a mask and armor. In Zone 88, his opening attack earned more than 1.3 million points within thirty seconds. He later killed leading contestants with single sword thrusts and returned to first place with eighty million points 7 8 10.
First place gave him a direct berth in the Universe Finals. He nevertheless denied being Zone 88’s Sword God, telling his companions that he had qualified from Zone 33. Before the universe-wide trials, he changed his registration back to Chen Ao 12 16.
Chen Ao ranked fourth in the trial phase and reached the final five. During the ranking matches, he concealed his abilities through an apparently helpless defeat against Bolan and unconventional victories over Luo Feng and Long Yun. He subsequently entered the Primal Secret Region 17 18 21.
Chaos City and Resource Gathering
During his first thirty years in Chaos City, Chen Ao deliberately limited his public Heavenly Bridge results. He chose Illusionist opponents to avoid exposing his sword techniques and ignored the Green Shadow Grandmasters’ attempts to recruit him. His actual goal was to secure the Chaos City Lord as a powerful backer 23 25 26 27.
After entering his Primal Region residence, he undertook resource-gathering missions. In the Purgatory Abyss, he stole gene-enhancing roots from a Blood Tree guarded by Undying serpents, narrowly escaping through repeated spatial jumps. He later explored sixty-three species’ territories and collected 143 similar gene-enhancing items 30 31 32.
In Blood Luo World, Chen Ao and Luo Feng hunted city lords for Blood Luo Crystals, killing approximately eight Domain Lords per day. Chen Ao also killed a sixth-stage World Lord. He sold seven thousand crystals for seven million points and bought the first level of Six Divine Wood Swords for ten million points before entering more than forty years of seclusion 34 35 36.
Becoming the Chaos City Lord’s Disciple
Chen Ao used Wood–Space fusion law to clear the Universe Level Original Tongtian Mountain specifically to attract the Chaos City Lord’s attention. The achievement exposed the gap between his modest public record and his actual talent 38.
The Chaos City Lord required him to master the Scale Armor Chapter within fifty years to become a direct disciple. Chen Ao negotiated to exchange twenty Chaos Stele study opportunities for two billion points and obtained permission to cultivate in the Inner Mansion 40 41.
He completed the chapter in twenty years, cleared Domain Lord Tongtian Mountain, and broke through to World Lord. After accepting him as his thirty-second direct disciple, the Chaos City Lord also learned that he had fused with twelve Blood Luo Crystals. Chen Ao intended to remain safely in Chaos City rather than leave for experience 42.
Earth’s Sale and the Vinewood King Identity
When Luo Feng reported that Yanzhu King was attempting to buy Earth by force, Chen Ao sent his World Lord clone to intervene. The clone could kill ordinary King-level Immortals with Strangulation. Chen Ao later confronted Shi Huo Venerable, who abandoned his attempt to recover his son’s Supreme Treasure after seeing proof of Chen Ao’s strength 43 44 45.
Recognizing that they could not retain unrestricted control of Earth, Chen Ao asked the Chaos City Lord to negotiate its sale at one-thousandth of its actual value, with Luo Feng as the contracting owner. He retained much of the valuable treasure-point portion in reserve so Luo Feng could obtain useful treasures later, and urged him to become strong enough to reclaim Earth for Earthlings 45 46.
Chen Ao then developed a second identity through his plant clone. After becoming Undying, the clone entered the Ancestral God Religion as an apparently newborn Ten-Thousand-Wood Vine. The Ancestral Gods found perfect genes, detected no clone connection, and verified its apparent birth by rewinding space-time 46 48 49.
Taking the name Vinewood King, he acted like an inexperienced child to gain the Two-Faced Ancestral God’s protection and gifts. He received high-grade armor, a soul-type Supreme Treasure, and eventually the Three-Wood Sword 49 50.
Appearance
- Human body: Retains a youthful appearance despite being older than Hong and already past seventy during his early meetings with Luo Feng 1 2.
- Genius Battle disguise: Wears a mask, armor, and a sword to prevent recognition during the preliminary competition 7 16.
- Clone on Earth: Appears as a burly World Lord when confronting Yanzhu King 43.
- Plant clone: Grows to eight million kilometers and later exceeds ten million kilometers in size 43 48.
- Reduced plant form: Can become a ten-meter-tall, roughly humanoid lifeform covered in tiny vines 48.
Personality
Chen Ao places survival above pride, adventure, and public recognition. He habitually reminds himself that possessing cheats does not grant the protagonist’s protection. Even after enjoying the rewards of a dangerous expedition, he consciously rejects the urge to chase further thrills 2 31.
His concealment is deliberate rather than a lack of ambition. He accepts ridicule, understates his strength, stages poor performances, and uses Luo Feng or Bolan to draw attention away from himself. Conversely, he reveals carefully selected achievements when doing so can secure the Chaos City Lord’s backing 15 20 26 38.
He is shamelessly pragmatic when negotiating for resources or protection. He exchanges prestigious study opportunities for points, impersonates Luo Feng before the Inner Mansion guards, and calls the Two-Faced Ancestral God “Dad” to coax more treasures from him 40 42 49 50.
His treatment of others combines calculation with concrete assistance. He cultivates Luo Feng as a shield against unwanted attention, but also rescues civilians, shares useful resources, protects Earth, and directs its sale proceeds toward Luo Feng’s growth. The Chaos City Lord interprets his handling of Earth’s fortune as loyalty to an old friend 1 20 32 43 45 46.
Abilities & Skills
Sword Saint System
Chen Ao’s system provides four active skills with additional passive effects 5.
| Skill | Documented effects | Limits / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Q skill | Enters spatial rifts, supports space-law comprehension, and provides an exclusive space for his Sunken Water Vine 1 19. | Has no direct offensive effect and does not teach him how to analyze or apply space law 1 4. |
| W — Meditation | Restores health, reduces damage, and greatly accelerates comprehension through meditation. Also assists the plant clone in absorbing energy 5 46. | Was the principal accelerator behind his development of thousands of Phantom Bodies 5. |
| E skill | Adds ten percent true damage to attacks; its passive increases power when using swords 34. | Its active and passive effects together help offset a tenfold strength difference 34. |
| R — Highlander’s Blood | Enhances his genetic strength; raises the Sunken Water Vine clone to the perfect genetic level 20 31 32. | His own base genes and the system’s enhancement are treated as separate components 32. |
Space Law and Phantom Bodies
Chen Ao’s Phantom Bodies can support both offense and defense, unlike spatial afterimages used primarily for movement 1.
- Combines numerous Phantom Bodies into attacks that appear to be single sword strikes 4.
- Blocks Luo Feng’s Golden Illusion Sword without moving, then seizes it and breaks Luo Feng’s spiritual connection to it 6.
- Sends sword attacks through space, making their point of arrival difficult to predict or defend against 10.
- Chooses where he emerges from spatial travel, allowing him to escape serpents unable to track the fluctuations quickly enough 31.
- Initially has far more comprehension than practical skill; Venerable Nine Swords mistakes his concealed performance for crude Hundred Line Flow 4 17.
Swordsmanship and Fusion Laws
Chen Ao develops his swordsmanship around space-law applications and later Wood–Space fusion law 5 38.
- Thousandfold Combat Power: A close-combat manual for controlling a little over a thousand Phantom Bodies 5.
- Space Cleave: A sword technique that improves the efficiency of his space-law use 5.
- Six Divine Wood Swords: Uses Wood–Space fusion law; its first level costs him ten million points 36 38.
- Wood Beast God Path: Masters the Scale Armor Chapter, then begins the second volume 42 43.
- Cross-realm combat: Kills Domain Lords and a sixth-stage World Lord while still below the World Lord realm 34 35.
Sunken Water Vine Innate Techniques
The clone’s innate secret patterns provide material for studying fusion laws, not merely combat techniques 19 43.
- Strangulation: Uses over a hundred vines and combines Wood, Water, and Space Laws. His early imitation is an incomplete fusion and cannot overcome the enormous strength gap against an Undying serpent 19 31.
- Later Strangulation: With perfect genes and World Lord-level clone strength, can kill ordinary King-level Immortals despite using only part of the technique’s potential 44.
- Void Slaughter: A universe-origin gift combining Gold, Wood, and Space Laws. He cannot yet understand or use it because it requires the Gold Origin Law 20 43.
- Absorption: Works alongside W Meditation to absorb immortal divine power during the clone’s Undying breakthrough 46.
Willpower and Illusion Resistance
- Breaks Heavenly Bridge illusions in three seconds without revealing his sword techniques 23 25.
- Fuses with twelve Blood Luo Crystals and possesses the Black Warrior mark, impressing the Chaos City Lord 42.
- Maintains enough composure before the Chaos City Lord to negotiate repeatedly; the City Lord regards this as evidence of exceptionally strong will 40 41.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Early sword — An ordinary, deteriorated weapon that disintegrates into iron filings after one of his powerful attacks 3.
- Black Metal Plate — The first plate of the Nine Tribulations Secret Manual, offered to Luo Feng for one Hunyuan Unit despite Chen Ao valuing it far more highly 4.
- Gene-enhancing roots — Blood Tree roots and related items collected in the Purgatory Abyss; improve his base genes but cease working at a multiplier of ten 31 32.
- Blood Luo Crystals — Gathered with Luo Feng; twelve are fused into his body, while thousands are sold for cultivation points 34 36 42.

Relationships
- Luo Feng — Junior, sparring partner, and strategic shield. Chen Ao guides his law comprehension, helps accelerate his growth, intervenes over Earth, and preserves resources for his future development. Luo Feng respects his strength but finds his constant concealment frustrating 7 13 20 43 46.
- Hong — Longstanding acquaintance who knows Chen Ao’s overwhelming strength. Hong is closer to him than Lei and unsuccessfully appeals for his help against the Golden Horned Beast 1 2.
- Lei — Addresses Chen Ao as an elder brother and suspects that he is Zone 88’s Sword God, which Chen Ao denies 2 12.
- Chaos City Lord — Master and desired protector. Accepts Chen Ao as his thirty-second direct disciple after the Scale Armor Chapter test and approves of his loyalty toward Luo Feng 42 45.

- Venerable Nine Swords — Recognizes promise in Chen Ao during the Genius Battle and considers taking him as a disciple, but later loses interest because of his deliberately slow recorded progress 17 26.
- Sword Ghost King, King Muqi, and King Ke Jian — Green Shadow Grandmasters who try to correct his apparent Illusionist path and attract him as a disciple; he never attends their recruitment lectures 23 25.
- Cangshi King — Introduces the plant clone to the Ancestral God Religion and teaches it basic Undying body transformation while believing it to be inexperienced 48.
- Two-Faced Ancestral God — Patron of Vinewood King. Chen Ao exploits his apparent newborn attachment to obtain protection and Supreme Treasures, addressing him as “Dad” 49 50.
- Elder Ancestral God / Pale — Investigates the clone’s apparent birthplace by rewinding space-time and finds no evidence of possession or outside placement 48 49.
