Orochimaru is a renowned Konoha Sannin whose battlefield record, influence, and support from Danzō once made him a leading contender for the Hokage position. He is dissatisfied with Hiruzen Sarutobi and views strength beyond the jōnin and Kage ranks as the true standard worth pursuing. 1 7 13

After the Third Great Ninja War, he selects orphan Kenichi Amamiya as his disciple and brings him into his research work. Orochimaru recognizes Kenichi's aptitude, trains him as a ninja, and gives him access to dangerous investigations involving Hashirama Senju's cells, dōjutsu, bloodlines, and human test subjects. 1 2 564
