Background / History
Poisoning and paralysis
Gu Lan and her younger brother, Gu Bei, are direct descendants of the Gu Family, one of the Feather God Sect’s three most powerful families. She was once the greatest genius of the family’s younger generation, but an apparent cultivation accident left her legs paralyzed. Numerous physicians failed to identify the cause, and she remained wheelchair-bound for ten years 125 126.
Yun Tian discovered that her condition was caused by an unusual poison that disguised itself as spiritual energy. It clogged her meridians and destroyed sensation in her legs. Rather than react rashly to the diagnosis, Gu Lan restrained Gu Bei and asked Yun Tian to finish explaining 125.
Recovery and apprenticeship
Gu Lan chose a treatment that would restore both her mobility and her strength, rather than simply remove the poison and leave her vulnerable to another attack. Yun Tian used Spiritual Needles to restore sensation, then helped her process ten years of accumulated energy. When her existing technique proved inadequate, he transmitted a new one tailored to her 126.
After reaching the peak Heavenly Star Realm, she accepted Yun Tian’s offer of apprenticeship in exchange for cancelling the treatment and technique fees. He gave her a Communicator, and she chose to continue addressing him as “sir” 126.
Return to prominence
Under Yun Tian’s guidance, Gu Lan gained complete control over her restored power. Although initially doubtful that she could reclaim the top ranking within a month, she accepted his challenge after he promised to grant her one request 127.
| Event | Result |
|---|---|
| Sacred Spirit Heavenly Rankings challenge | Reached first place after rapidly overtaking Nie Li and Lu Piao 127 128. |
| Finalized Sacred Spirit Heavenly Rankings | Retained first place and received the winner’s reward 135. |
| Apprentice Recruitment Tournament | Placed second among senior disciples, behind Ying Yue’ru 137. |
When the Gu Family tried to bring her home, Gu Lan refused because she wanted to remain with Yun Tian. He punished the representatives who attempted to pressure her and later established a protected Immortal Cave Abode for her and Ying Yue’ru 128.
Gu Lan also rejected the elders competing to recruit her at the apprenticeship ceremony, publicly declaring that she already had a master 137.
Gu Family succession
Gu Lan knew Gu Heng was responsible for her poisoning and asked Yun Tian to leave the debt for her to settle herself 129.
Before the family’s aptitude-testing gathering, she told Nie Li that she did not intend to compete for family leadership: she preferred cultivating beside Yun Tian and would support Gu Bei’s candidacy. At the gathering, Yun Tian publicly exposed Gu Heng’s poisoning. The family subsequently named Gu Lan first heir and Gu Bei second heir, while revoking Gu Heng’s eligibility pending observation 151 152.
The elders cited her strength, character, and support, while also acknowledging that failing to offer her the position could offend Yun Tian. Her appointment therefore did not reflect a change in her stated wish to support her brother 152.
Life with Yun Tian
Gu Lan used her promised request to ask Yun Tian to accompany her to the monthly Market Fair. When he invited Ying Yue’ru and Long Yuyin as well, he reassured Gu Lan that the group outing would not consume her request 135.
At a later auction, she bid 210,000 Spirit Stones for the Ten Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains Painting on behalf of Yun Tian’s group. The group secured the painting after Yan Yang withdrew, and Yun Tian subsequently opened its restrictions and demonstrated its formation patterns 145 150.
After Yun Tian returned from another world, Gu Lan eagerly agreed to accompany him on future journeys. She later initiated an intimate relationship with him, motivated by both affection and a desire to repay his kindness. Their relationship became openly affectionate afterward, and she missed him intensely during his visit to the Heavenly Sound Divine Sect 163 164 169.
Phantom God Palace expedition
- Side-hall treasures: Gu Lan and her companions claimed most of the treasure chests after Yun Tian disabled the Heaven-Locking Inscription Formation 174.
- Palace entry: She accompanied Yun Tian and the other women into the Phantom God Palace 177.
- Ganges Crystal contest: Her group took all the crystals previously claimed by the Wild Thunder Demon Venerable 178.
Appearance
Gu Lan has delicate, beautiful features and exceptionally fair skin. At her first meeting with Yun Tian, her expression bears a lingering sadness from years of confinement 125.
- Hair: Long, ink-black hair, worn loosely gathered with a green jade hairpin during the Market Fair outing 135.
- Eyes: Distinctive amber eyes 135.
- Fair attire: A green gauze gown, silver wrist bells, and shoes decorated with tiny crystals 135.
- Former identifying feature: A wheelchair used during her ten years of paralysis 125 126.
Personality
Gu Lan is gentle, composed, and considerate. She maintains a brave front during her disability and keeps Gu Bei from acting impulsively when he learns she was poisoned. Her patience also extends to Gu Heng: rather than allow Yun Tian to kill him immediately, she chooses to settle the grievance herself 125 126 129.
Recovery brings back her liveliness. She becomes curious, playful, and willing to tease Yun Tian, while remaining easily embarrassed by romantic attention. She notices Xiao Yu’s feminine behavior despite the latter’s male disguise and shows jealousy when other women receive Yun Tian’s attention 127 128 135 162.
She is affectionate toward her junior sisters, comforting Huang Ying when Yun Tian takes her treasured pastry. Her attachment to Yun Tian ultimately matters more to her than family leadership, though she remains willing to support Gu Bei’s ambitions 150 151.
