Background / History

Meeting Yun Tian

When Yun Tian arrives forty years before the main storyline, Ling’er identifies Yu Yan as a teenager who has not yet married. Yu Yan and her sisters later meet him after the aroma of his cooking draws them to his courtyard gate. When he opens it, all three tumble to the ground, and Yu Yan falls hard enough to become teary-eyed. Yun Tian invites them to eat, beginning a friendship sustained by frequent visits 4 5.

Leaving to Take Office

After coming of age, Yu Yan and Yu Feng visit Yun Tian to announce that they will leave the next day to take office in their respective countries. He gives each sister a protective magical sword and promises to come immediately if they need him. They spend their last day together enjoying an outing before he sees them off 5.

Twelve years after their departure, the main storyline is about to begin. Yu Yin subsequently tells Yun Tian that both younger sisters love him and encourages him to accept them as partners so the three sisters can be together again. By Chapter 27, Ling’er regards Yu Yan as one of Yun Tian’s partners 6 7 27.

Reunion in the Jade Island Kingdom

Before traveling to the world of Tales of Demons and Gods, Yun Tian brings Dongfang and the others to visit Yu Yan in the Jade Island Kingdom. She jumps directly into his arms rather than using the stairs, prompting him to catch her and reprimand her for taking the risk. She calls him “husband” and explains that she knew he would catch her 37.

Yun Tian tells her he intends to leave the following day. Yu Yan spends that night with him, alongside Bailing and Dongfang Xiong, before he departs with Ling’er the next morning 37.

Personality

Yu Yan is openly affectionate toward Yun Tian and confident in his willingness to protect her. She repeatedly leaps into his arms despite his warnings, explaining both as a younger girl and later as his partner that she trusts him to catch her 5 37.

His affection also makes her bashful: being called “my little Yu Yan” leaves her blushing and secretly delighted. When he compliments Yu Feng, she immediately asks whether he finds her equally appealing 5.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Protective magical sword — Given by Yun Tian before she leaves to take office. He states that a single strike can kill a Primordial Heavenly Demon and promises to come to her aid if needed. Its destructive power belongs to the treasure; no comparable personal combat feat is shown for Yu Yan 5 7.

Relationships

  • Yun Tian — Longtime companion, protector, and eventual romantic partner. Their relationship develops from frequent courtyard visits to her addressing him as “husband” 5 27 37.
  • Yu Yin — Eldest sister. She worries about Yu Yan’s safety when warned of the coming disasters and supports her becoming Yun Tian’s partner 5 7.
  • Yu Feng — Older sister. They visit Yun Tian together, come of age, and leave to take office on the same day 5.

Storyline Differences

  • In the source storyline recalled by Yun Tian and Ling’er, Yu Yan is Nangong Wentian’s mother and is associated with Nangong Yi. The novel explicitly states that Wentian is still born, but his mother has changed; Yu Yan is therefore not his mother in this altered timeline 4 5.
  • The Spirit God named Yu Yan whom Yun Tian later seeks on the Heavenly Fortune Plateau is a separate character in the Tales of Demons and Gods world 37 41 42.
