Background / History
Life in the Ghost Mystery Realm
Pheobe grew up under her grandparents’ care in the Ghost Mystery Realm, a hidden world inside Mt. Pyre with unusually dense Ghost-type energy. She lived in a simple wooden cabin and had never ventured outside. Growing flowers was largely a way to relieve her boredom, and she had wanted to leave for a long time 19 20 21 22.
When Chen Shi arrived to collect her, she mistook him for an intruder and summoned Little Spirit to make him leave. Although she followed him hoping to see him get into trouble, she intended to rescue him if necessary. Her grandmother’s revelation that Chen Shi had been invited left her deeply embarrassed 19.
Her grandparents entrusted her to Chen Shi so she could learn how to live outside the realm and distinguish trustworthy people from dangerous ones. They gave him a naturally shed Giratina reverse scale as payment for looking after her 20.
Staying at the Chen Family Farm
During the journey, Pheobe questioned Chen Shi constantly about the outside world and became fascinated with Drakloak’s Dragon/Ghost typing. Chen Shi had Gengar use Hypnosis to silence her, later presenting the incident as a lesson against trusting people too readily. Little Spirit carried her to the farm 21 22.
The Chen elders welcomed her and prepared a room across the hall from Chen Shi’s. Its carpet, furniture, and enormous bed astonished her after a lifetime of sleeping on wooden boards. Chen Shi told her the room would remain available to her 22.
Grandpa Chen urged her to become strong enough to protect herself and her unusually promising Ghost Pokémon. He also encouraged her and Chen Shi to enter the upcoming Pokémon World Championships, which accepted talented competitors under twenty 23.
Pheobe began taking paid catching assignments for Chen Shi’s research. She accepted an offer of 200,000 League Coins to catch an advanced-level Onix in Rusturf Tunnel, ultimately returning with an elite-level specimen that Chen Shi evolved into Steelix 25 30.
Independent Travel
After Little Spirit reached gym level, Pheobe challenged Chen Shi’s Drakloak and lost. Chen Shi identified her lack of battle experience and tendency to panic when a plan failed, recommending that she travel and fight more opponents 32 33.
The Chen elders approved her departure, with Grandma Chen’s Gengar assigned to protect her secretly. Chen Shi helped her pack, instructed her to call home upon reaching new places, and gave her one million League Coins as advance payment for catching advanced-level Scyther and Sneasel 33.
Chen Shi subsequently asked Steven to arrange a scam intended to teach her caution, saying her guardians had approved. When they encountered Pheobe outside Lavaridge Town, she reported that scammers had taken all her money, beaten her, and left her without food for two days. She did not know Chen Shi and Steven had arranged the incident 36 47.
Chen Shi bought her a meal and gave her a Dreepy fossil recovered from Meteor Falls. Steven agreed to arrange its revival once the Revival Machine was repaired. Pheobe had come to town for the Elite King Exhibition Match but was surprised to learn that admission required a paid ticket 39 47.
By their later hot-spring gathering, Pheobe had caught Scyther and sent it back to Chen Shi. Sneasel remained difficult to find, and she agreed to catch one if she encountered it 50.
At the exhibition, Pheobe joined Chen Shi, Steven, and Cynthia in seats beside Lorelei and Lance. The group suspected that the League had deliberately gathered promising young Trainers so they could become acquainted before potentially becoming regional leaders. Chen Shi introduced Pheobe as an heir to the tradition of Mt. Pyre, restoring her confidence after the others’ impressive credentials had made her feel overlooked 51.
Sidney and Mura’s exhibition was her first opportunity to see Elite Four members in person. She asked Chen Shi who would win and was baffled by his prediction of a draw and his explanation that such events also involved managing relationships rather than simply determining the stronger combatant 52.
Return to the Farm and Dreepy’s Revival
Pheobe returned to the farm with Steven and proudly showed Chen Shi her Dreepy, which had been revived a few days earlier. Chen Shi identified its Near-Champion potential and encouraged her to train it well, saying it could become her ace 81.
When she announced that she intended to stay at the farm, Grandma Chen’s Gengar emerged from her shadow and celebrated the end of its protective assignment. Pheobe then learned that it had been guarding her throughout her journey and was touched by the precaution. Her experiences of fraud, violence, and the lives of people at the bottom of society had made her more knowledgeable and less naive than when she first left Mt. Pyre 81.
Pokémon World Championships
Pheobe accompanied Chen Shi to meet Steven at Devon Corporation before their trip to Silver Town. At the championships’ opening, Steven brought her into his private competitor lounge 84 89.
Watching Agatha inspired Pheobe’s admiration for an established Ghost-type Elite Four member. Chen Shi encouraged her to work toward a similar position in Hoenn, noting that Mura was nearing retirement. Pheobe jokingly suggested that Chen Shi become a Ghost-type Elite Four member instead, since his starter was Dreepy 91.
Her documented tournament results are:
| Round / Event | Opponent | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Early main-tournament match | Oak Daisy | Pheobe wins with Gengar against Daisy’s Clefable 92. |
| Round of sixty-four | Wusong | Pheobe defeats his Alakazam and Girafarig, advancing to the final thirty-two 98. |
| Round of thirty-two | Cynthia | Pheobe concedes before battling, judging Cynthia’s team too strong to defeat without pointlessly injuring her own Pokémon 102 103. |
| Award ceremony | — | Receives an award among the sixteen contestants eliminated in the round of thirty-two 144 150. |
Pheobe initially reacted with despair when drawn against Cynthia, whose Mid-Stage Senior Elite King Garchomp alone seemed overwhelming. Cynthia’s promise to battle at full strength made her feel even more aggrieved, while Chen Shi’s laughter prompted her to complain to Steven that the pair were picking on her. After conceding, however, she felt relaxed and explained that she had entered the championships for enjoyment rather than results 102 103.
She remained with her friends after elimination, watching later matches and joining their discussions at the villa. Chen Shi gave her a Key Stone and Gengarite as thanks to the Mt. Pyre lineage for Giratina’s scale. Although she was pleased to learn that all top-thirty-two competitors would receive rewards, she appeared aggrieved during the award ceremony 109 124 144 150.
Attack on Mt. Pyre
After the championships, Pheobe returned to Verdanturf Town with Chen Shi and Cynthia. Chen Shi arranged for Charizard to carry her after she complained that Gengar could not transport her safely 159.
When she learned that her grandparents were under attack, Pheobe begged Chen Shi to take her to Mt. Pyre. She cried throughout the urgent flight on Salamence, fearing that her grandparents could not withstand a Champion-level attacker. Cynthia followed on Garchomp 163.
Maxie and Archie defeated her grandparents’ defending forces and stole the Red Orb and Beautiful Blue Orb before the rescuers arrived. Pheobe called out to her grandparents upon reaching the damaged Ghost Mystery Realm with Chen Shi and Cynthia 163.
By her next return to the Chen Family Farm, Pheobe reported that her grandparents were safe, their Pokémon had been treated, and the realm was all right. Her grandparents had explained the significance of the stolen orbs and warned that leaving them outside their custody could cause a disaster. They then sent her back out of the realm rather than allowing her to remain there 195.
Chen Shi reassured her that he had found a lead and arranged a plan to recover the orbs. Pheobe wanted to act immediately but accepted his instructions because she trusted him. She also joined the group’s planned amusement-park outing with Jirachi 195.
During her stay at Mt. Pyre, her grandparents supplied valuable resources that brought both Dusknoir and Gengar to Mid-Stage Senior Elite King. They initially preferred investing in Dusknoir because of its greater potential, but Pheobe chose to emphasize Gengar after receiving its Mega Evolution items. A demonstration of Mega Evolution won their support 200.
Confident in her improved team, Pheobe challenged Chen Shi again, hoping to defeat him and finally turn the tables on his teasing. He refused and suggested that she test herself against Cynthia instead. Pheobe declined to pursue that alternative, since beating Chen Shi—not merely assessing her strength—was her real aim 200.
Victini’s Energy Experiment
On a journey home with Chen Shi and Cynthia, Pheobe asked why legends claimed that a Trainer with Victini could never lose. Chen Shi explained its ability to produce and share limitless energy, then asked Victini to give her some despite her immediate objection 213.
Victini transferred more energy than Pheobe could bear, forcing her to run frantically until she expended it. The incident demonstrated that its energy could affect humans, but left Pheobe exhausted and furious. She threatened to tell her grandparents that Chen Shi had bullied her, then demanded that he lend her Little V for two days as the condition for forgiveness 213.
Sootopolis Mystery Realm Expedition
Pheobe traveled to Sootopolis City with Chen Shi and Cynthia after learning that the lead on the stolen orbs lay inside its mystery realm. Wallace’s aide escorted them to the League’s hotel gathering, where they met Steven, Wallace, Winona, and Diantha 200 215.
After entering the mystery realm, Pheobe initially found useful items and avoided danger. Her luck changed in a forest, where hostile Pokémon overwhelmed her, repeatedly beat her, and stole almost all her belongings. When they tried to seize her Poké Balls as well, she broke them and moved her partners into her shadow to prevent their capture, then escaped with Gengar’s help 223 228.
With her backpack and supplies gone, Pheobe spent nearly a day without food or water. Gengar’s attempt to offer one of its saliva-covered Ghost/Poison-type Pokéblocks only worsened her distress. Chen Shi eventually found her, gave her a meal and snacks, and fed her hungry Pokémon. Dusknoir, Gengar, Aegislash, Cofagrigus, Banette, and Sableye were present during the reunion 227.
Pheobe stayed with Chen Shi as he searched for the orbs, accepting a trip toward the volcano once he reminded her of their objective. She initially failed to recognize Team Magma members, but ordered her team to capture them after learning who they were; Jirachi carried out the capture before her Pokémon needed to act. Chen Shi also told her that his commitment to retrieving the orbs arose from the commission and payment offered by her grandparents 229.
She supported Chen Shi’s attempt to gather the other visitors after recognizing that Team Magma and Team Aqua made the expedition far more dangerous than an ordinary training exercise. Dependent on the replacement Poké Balls and supplies he had provided, she remained with the group while they waited for their companions. After Cynthia arrived with news of Team Magma’s captives, Pheobe offered to share her tent with her, not realizing that Chen Shi wanted time alone with Cynthia 232 234 235.
Back in Sootopolis City after the Legendary Pokémon conflict, Pheobe remained anxious about the orbs. She had seen Groudon and Kyogre surrender them to Rayquaza after their defeat and hoped Chen Shi might request their return. At the same time, she feared that such a request could anger Rayquaza and place him in danger, and recognized the orbs as Rayquaza’s spoils of battle. Their return to Mt. Pyre is not established in the provided account 258.
Later Elite King Competition
Yuko later told Chen Shi and Grandpa Chen that she intended to defeat Pheobe and secure an Elite King seat, asking them to witness her victory. This establishes Pheobe as Yuko’s intended opponent in that competition, but the passage does not record their match or its result 531.
Appearance
- Dark skin 19.
- Long blue dress 19.
- Two red flower ornaments, worn on either side of her hair 19.
- Bare feet; she explicitly tells the Chen family that she does not even have shoes 23.
Personality
Pheobe is curious and excitable, and is initially exceptionally inexperienced with everyday life outside Mt. Pyre. She asks what the sun and moon look like and interprets Chen Shi’s description of a world that “eats people alive” literally. She also struggles to understand why other Trainers would steal Pokémon when they already have partners of their own 21 23.
Her innocence does not prevent her from being mischievous or assertive. She initially tries to have Chen Shi expelled from the realm and angrily confronts him over the Hypnosis incident. Even when hoping to laugh at his misfortune, however, she plans to save him from danger 19 22.
She loves Ghost Pokémon and places considerable trust in Little Spirit. Her enthusiasm for obtaining Dreepy quickly overtakes her distress after the scam. She also develops a practical interest in money: she refuses to run an unpaid errand for Chen Shi but eagerly accepts once the reward reaches 200,000 League Coins 21 25 32 47.
Travel makes her more aware of hardship and human dishonesty, although she continues to miss social cues. She inadvertently asks Yuko about a painful personal matter and later fails to understand why Chen Shi and Cynthia want privacy rather than having Cynthia share her tent 81 95 235.
Pheobe values her Pokémon’s welfare over appearances. She considers conceding against an unbeatable opponent sensible and refuses to expose her partners to injury merely to save face. She is not deeply invested in tournament rankings and describes her championship participation as something she undertook for fun 103.
Her growing strength increases her confidence and competitive mischievousness, particularly toward Chen Shi. After her team’s advancement, she wants to defeat him so she can pick on him in return. She can also turn a grievance into bargaining leverage, demanding time with Victini after the energy-sharing incident 200 213.
Despite frequent complaints and emotional outbursts when hungry, robbed, or teased, she knows when to take a serious matter seriously. Her concern for her grandparents and the stolen orbs overrides her dislike of visiting a hot volcano, and she worries about Chen Shi’s safety when considering whether he should ask Rayquaza for the orbs 163 229 258.
Abilities & Skills
Ghost-Type Training
Pheobe specializes in Ghost-type Pokémon and possesses substantial Pokémon knowledge despite her unfamiliarity with the wider world 25 47.
- Her grandparents prepared training plans that her Pokémon can follow independently 25.
- Chen Shi considers her Ghost partners unusually large and promising, warning that their potential could attract thieves 23.
- She successfully catches an elite-level Onix and later obtains Scyther for Chen Shi’s evolution research 30 50.
- Her newly revived Dreepy has Near-Champion potential, and Chen Shi believes it can become her ace with proper training 81.
- She makes an independent training decision to prioritize Gengar’s Mega Evolution capabilities over her grandparents’ initial preference for investing chiefly in Dusknoir 200.
- Her Ghost partners can reside in and emerge from her shadow. She uses this to protect them when hostile Pokémon attempt to take her Poké Balls 19 223 227.
Battle Strategy
Pheobe uses Gravity to compensate for Little Spirit’s low speed, restricting faster opponents before following up with physical attacks 32.
- Against Drakloak, she orders Gravity while he is in subspace, intending to slow him when he emerges and strike with Ice Punch 32.
- Drakloak counters with Protect and Astonish, then retreats into subspace; Pheobe surrenders before the battle continues 32.
- Her earlier success against her grandparents’ fast Pokémon gave her excessive confidence in Gravity, since the elders had deliberately gone easy on her 33.
- Chen Shi identifies panic under pressure and insufficient practical battle experience as her principal weaknesses 33.
- Against Wusong’s Alakazam, she opens with Disable, extending Dusknoir’s shadow over Alakazam’s shadow and pinning it before it can switch from Reflect to Teleport. She then follows with Shadow Ball 98.
- Steven praises her improvement during the Wusong match, describing her as having become an excellent Trainer over the preceding months 98.
- She evaluates an opponent’s overall strength and is willing to concede rather than inflict avoidable injuries on her team, as demonstrated against Cynthia 102 103.
Mega Evolution
Chen Shi tells Pheobe that Gengar is the only member of her then-discussed team capable of Mega Evolution, disappointing her hope that Dusknoir might also possess a Mega form. He later supplies the necessary Key Stone and Gengarite 120 124.
Pheobe successfully demonstrates Gengar’s Mega Evolution to her grandparents. The demonstration persuades them to support her training priorities and invest resources in Gengar alongside Dusknoir 200.

Equipment / Items
- Space Backpack — Worn when she leaves the Chen Family Farm for her journey. Her backpack and its supplies are later stolen by hostile Pokémon in the Sootopolis mystery realm 33 223 227.
- Dreepy fossil — Recovered at Meteor Falls; Steven considers it sufficiently complete for revival, pending repairs to the Revival Machine. It is subsequently revived into her Dreepy 39 47 81.
- Key Stone and Gengarite — Given by Chen Shi as thanks to the Mt. Pyre lineage for Giratina’s scale. Pheobe later uses them to demonstrate Gengar’s Mega Evolution 124 200.
- Training resources from Mt. Pyre — Valuable items supplied by her grandparents that help Dusknoir and Gengar reach Mid-Stage Senior Elite King 200.
- Poké Balls — Breaks her existing balls to prevent hostile Pokémon from stealing her partners, allowing the Pokémon to shelter in her shadow instead. Chen Shi later supplies replacement balls 223 234.
- Championship award — Receives an award at the ceremony for competitors eliminated in the round of thirty-two 150.
Relationships
- Grandparents — Raised and sheltered her in the Ghost Mystery Realm. They arrange her stay with the Chen family so she can gain independence and experience. Their defeat during the theft of the orbs deeply frightens her, and recovering the family’s guarded relics becomes an important personal objective. They later supply resources for her team and support her focus on Gengar after seeing Mega Evolution 20 163 195 200 258.
- Chen Shi — Guide, host, sparring opponent, and employer for catching assignments. She calls him “Brother Chen Shi,” unaware that he arranged the scam she later describes to him. He gives her Dreepy’s fossil and Mega Evolution items, promises to retrieve the stolen orbs, and rescues and feeds her during the Sootopolis expedition. Their affectionate but contentious relationship includes frequent teasing, her desire to beat him in battle, and her demand to borrow Victini after his energy experiment 25 32 33 47 124 195 200 213 227.
- Grandpa Chen and Grandma Chen — Her grandparents’ longtime friends and her hosts at the farm. They welcome her as family and approve her travels with protective precautions 22 33.
- Grandma Chen’s Gengar — Initially hypnotizes her at Chen Shi’s request; later becomes her secret protector during her journey. Its assignment ends when she returns to stay at the farm, at which point she discovers its role and feels grateful 21 33 81.
- Steven Stone — Arranges the scam at Chen Shi’s request before formally meeting her. She addresses him as “Brother Steven,” and he agrees to help revive her Dreepy fossil. They travel and watch the championships together, and she appeals to him for sympathy when Chen Shi and Cynthia upset her before her round-of-thirty-two concession 36 47 81 89 102.
- Cynthia — Introduced by Chen Shi in Lavaridge Town. Pheobe immediately admires her beauty. They become traveling companions, but Pheobe concedes their championship match because of the strength gap. Cynthia checks that she is genuinely comfortable with her decision and later accompanies the effort to help her grandparents. Pheobe also offers to share her tent during the mystery-realm expedition 49 102 103 163 235.
- Lorelei and Lance — Meet Pheobe at the Lavaridge exhibition after Chen Shi introduces her as an heir to Mt. Pyre. Both take note of her background and remember her name. Lance later joins the group in the Sootopolis mystery realm 51 234 235.
- Oak Daisy — Championship opponent whom Pheobe defeats with Gengar 92.
- Wusong — Round-of-sixty-four opponent; Pheobe defeats his Alakazam and Girafarig to reach the final thirty-two 98.
- Yuko — Fellow championship participant whose painful history Pheobe inadvertently asks about. Later identifies Pheobe as the opponent she intends to defeat to obtain an Elite King seat 95 531.
- Victini — “Little V” — Chen Shi’s Mythical Pokémon. Its excessive energy transfer leaves Pheobe exhausted after a frantic run; she subsequently asks to borrow it for two days as compensation 213.
- Maxie and Archie — Leaders responsible for attacking her grandparents and stealing the Red Orb and Beautiful Blue Orb. Their actions motivate her concern for Mt. Pyre and involvement in the recovery expedition 163 195 258.
