Psychic power roughly equal to a mid-stage Second-Class Deity 523 After five days of purification work, his controlled Psychic power surpasses Jirachi’s.
Teleportation of a group 542 Teleports Steven, Cynthia, and Leon to a forest waterfall.

Background / History

In his previous life, Chen Shi was an orphan and an ordinary office worker. After working overtime, he was struck by a dump truck while rushing to work and arrived in the Pokémon world. Despite losing his parents again, he grew up feeling loved and secure under his grandparents’ care 1 11.

His parents died while suppressing a Pokémon riot when he was just over a year old, leaving him the Chen family’s only remaining descendant. His grandfather recognized his exceptional Breeder talent early but deliberately postponed his certification to protect him from unwanted attention 3.

At fifteen—the minimum age for beginning a journey in this world—his system awakened and supplied an Egg that hatched into a Shiny Dreepy seven days later. The system then disappeared, leaving only its information panel. Chen Shi initially set out with Dreepy alone, but returned for his grandfather’s Mudkip after losing to a Caterpie 1.

He spent the following year traveling in Sinnoh. During that journey, he rescued Florges from poachers who had brought her from Kalos, and found Leafeon and Togepi unconscious from hunger in an underground cavern. After discussing their future with his partners, he returned to Verdanturf Town, preferring farm life to another exhausting life on the road 1 4.

His concealment of his talent extended beyond delayed certification. He later explains that the Chen family’s valuable resources attracted envy, and that he avoided challenging Gyms during his first journey because people who coveted the farm did not want him to become powerful. Professor Oak’s support and his decision to compete seriously in the World Championships mark his departure from this prolonged caution 66 135.

His grandmother originally came from Celestic Town and was Professor Carolina’s childhood friend. She remained in Hoenn to care for Chen Shi after his parents’ deaths, foregoing visits to her old home. Chen Shi later explains this history to Carolina when she reproaches Grandma Chen for her long absence 314.

By the finale, Chen Shi and Cynthia have been married for four years, and their daughter Xiao Xi is three. Their wedding took place four years earlier, following his separation from the World Tree; Cynthia became pregnant in the second month of their marriage 561.

Appearance

  • Travel-worn on his return: Arrives at the farm visibly weathered by a year away 1.
  • Tanned and more mature: His grandmother remarks on his tan and notices that he has shed his childish air 3.
  • Taller than before: Officer Jenny Muko comments on his increased height 10.
  • Concealed appearance in the past: Uses a mask to hide his identity and wears robes while traveling through Hisui 326 372.
  • Rainbow-lit inner counterpart: Encounters an identical-looking figure surrounded by rainbow light within his consciousness; this figure is later identified as the embodiment of his own power 403 515.

Personality

Chen Shi values comfort, family, and a quiet daily routine. He wants to remain on the farm and care for his grandparents, but recognizes that protecting its rare resources requires strength. His research ambitions are similarly practical: status, funding, and access to otherwise unavailable resources matter more to him than titles alone 3 8 31.

He treats catching a Pokémon as a lifelong responsibility. On learning that Florges and Leafeon might eventually be limited by their potential, he resolves to find a way forward rather than let either partner fall behind. He also encourages Charmander’s incomplete progress instead of blaming it, helping a Pokémon frightened of being considered useless regain confidence 11 34.

His playful side frequently becomes teasing or deliberate mischief. He embarrasses Pheobe during their first meeting and chooses a research username that mocks Cynthia’s indecisiveness. His attempts to teach Pheobe caution can be harsh: he arranges a scam, then feels guilty when he discovers she has gone without food for two days 19 31 36 47.

He is cautious about exposing valuable discoveries and reluctant to accept heroic obligations. When the Draconids identify him as a possible prophesied hero, he tries to redirect the responsibility to Steven rather than involve himself in Hoenn’s looming disaster 27 45 48.

This reluctance does not prevent him from eventually accepting responsibility. He agrees to become both the Rainbow Hero and the World Tree Guardian, participates in rescues and legendary crises, and travels into a parallel world to seek an answer to dark matter. Nevertheless, he continues to dislike being drawn into new errands and repeatedly expresses a desire to return to the countryside 235 309 467 479 527.

He values fairness within friendship. When Steven offers him a share of collected stones, Chen Shi insists on a definite boundary rather than indefinitely profiting from his friend’s generosity. He also advises his companions to live for themselves instead of allowing public expectations or family ambitions to determine their entire lives 82 260.

His patience has limits when others manipulate him. He bargains with Mew for compensation, deliberately inflates Suzuki Yu’s auction bids, and becomes furious when he realizes Arceus already knew more about his power than it had disclosed 75 179 485.

Although he urges the Hisuian Goodra to pursue strength and resist mediocrity, he does not want them to follow him blindly. He leaves Big Goo to decide freely whether to join him after demonstrating the benefits of their cooperation 387 395.

The dream arc exposes the emotional depth beneath his preference for an ordinary life. He resists leaving a peaceful household with Cynthia and their daughter, even when confronted with its unreality, and breaks down when his dream wife destroys that world so he can return to reality 549 550 551.

Abilities & Skills

System Panel

The panel remaining from his departed system lets Chen Shi inspect Pokémon information 1.

  • Displays species, level, potential, gender, Ability, and moves 1 8.
  • Can inspect an unhatched Egg’s potential and inherited moves 13.
  • Helps him recognize training progress, new Fairy-type moves, and Charmander’s deteriorating potential 12 23 28.
  • Cannot initially display Mew’s level, instead presenting question marks that reveal the limits of its early inspection capability 74.
  • Announces that its upgrade requirements have been met after Cogita arrives and gives him part of a reward in advance 467.

Psychic Powers

Chen Shi is a born psychic and has understood Pokémon speech since childhood. Initially, he considers himself inferior to specialists such as Sabrina and Caitlin, unaware of the nature and magnitude of his latent power 4 74.

  • Uses Telepathy and moves small objects with Confusion 4.
  • Coats his Key Stone in blue psychic power during Swampert’s first Mega Evolution 6.
  • Uses psychic examination when an ordinary physical inspection fails to explain Charmander’s condition 29.
  • Mew identifies his unusual ability as the power of the heart, rather than merely conventional psychic strength, and says it has seen a human with the same ability over a thousand years earlier 74.
  • Uxie and the other Lake Guardians find the power inside him unfathomably strong, but initially beyond his conscious control 401 403.
  • Mewtwo’s analysis leads him to recognize that his power derives from sincere, pure emotions and invisible bonds; his inner embodiment later confirms this explanation 485 516.
  • His apparent later “growth” is largely an increase in control over power already present within him 523.
  • Eventually uses Teleport to transport himself and several companions together 542.

The counterpart he meets within his consciousness is not established as a separate person. It explicitly identifies itself as the embodiment of the power inside Chen Shi and as Chen Shi himself. Its advanced demonstrations show what that power can accomplish, but do not mean Chen Shi immediately possesses the same degree of control 403 515 516 517.

Dark Matter Purification

Chen Shi’s power of the heart counters the dark aura and dark matter that corrupt Pokémon. At first, the power responds involuntarily to corrupted Pokémon, and deliberate purification requires physical contact and the direct transfer of Psychic power 307 401 517.

  • Purifies Eternatus, Dark Eternatus, and the Legendary Pokémon affected during the Hoopa incident 454.
  • Works with Mewtwo and Mew to investigate why his power can counter dark matter 483 493.
  • Learns that dark matter gradually strengthens corrupted Pokémon, a fact he had previously overlooked 498.
  • His inner embodiment demonstrates remote purification by sending power along the thread corresponding to a Shadow Pokémon 517.
  • Develops the ability to use the same thread-based method himself; early trials require more power before sufficient energy reaches the target 518.
  • Repeated purification work helps him gain control of his power while assisting the effort to reclaim Kanto in the parallel world 523.

Breeding and Pokémon Care

His Breeder knowledge combines early talent, practical experience, and instruction from his grandparents 3 9.

  • Prepares Pokémon food and individually suited Pokéblocks 2.
  • Begins studying medicinal properties and the family’s potion-making techniques under Grandpa Chen 9 13.
  • Learns from Grandma Chen’s specialization in customized food and Pokéblocks 9.
  • Develops a Fairy-type Pokéblock formula that awakens and replenishes Fairy energy in Florges and Togepi 12 26 30.
  • Uses suitable evolutionary resources to improve his partners’ potential, including Grandpa Chen’s Potential Potion for Metang 32.
  • Delays Charmeleon’s next evolution with an Everstone so it can adapt after recovering from its earlier condition 57.
  • Successfully makes a top-grade potion at sixteen. Grandpa Chen entrusts him with the family’s longstanding ambition to improve the Potential Potion to master grade, though Chen Shi does not claim that this improvement has already been accomplished 80 260.
  • Gives his partners massages after intensive training to help their muscles relax 302.
  • Supports Hisuian Pokémon with food, training plans, move instruction, and healing through Florges 395 408.

Pokémon Research

Chen Shi draws on memories from his previous life to investigate evolution methods and phenomena unknown to this world. He initially publishes under an alias rather than his real name, but later openly identifies himself as Severe Indecisiveness and publicly reveals major discoveries 8 31 62 135 151.

Subject Result / Status
Leafeon and Glaceon Publishes papers identifying their evolutions before returning to further research at the farm 8 25.
Onix → Steelix Records evolution with a Metal Coat and transfer machine; publishes a paper explaining the Link Cable’s magnetic-field trigger 30 31.
Fairy type Demonstrates the type through Togetic and Florges; initially postpones publication until its worldwide reawakening. Later publicly names Fairy and explains Florges’s immunity to Dragon-type energy at the World Championships 26 27 151.
Mega Evolution Successfully demonstrates it with Swampert and initially keeps it confidential. Later unveils it publicly and agrees to provide a paper in exchange for access to League vault resources 6 7 27 117 125 370.
Friendship-based evolution Proposes that friendship triggers Togepi’s and Riolu’s evolutions. Professor Oak suggests studying Return as a measurable starting point; Cogita later confirms that Chen Shi published the friendship evolution theory 8 34 62 370.
Scyther and Sneasel evolutions Says he knows their evolved forms and commissions Pheobe to obtain specimens. Later requests an advanced-level Scyther and Poliwhirl; Cogita subsequently credits him with discovering Scizor’s evolution requirements 33 58 370.
Pokédex development Suggests features for Professor Oak’s first Pokédex, including Pokémon identification, calls, internet access, and a one-button distress signal 311.
Dark matter and Dark Pokémon Establishes research arrangements using Devon-supplied equipment, protective suits, and samples from Dark Cacturne; also arranges for Mew and Mewtwo to assist research at the Mt. Silver Shelter in the parallel world 460 467 493.
  • Plans to use Fairy-type and Mega Evolution findings to pursue a Doctor title and negotiate for legendary-grade League resources 27 31.
  • The League later offers one item from Vault No. 1 and three from Vault No. 2 in exchange for a Mega Evolution paper due within two weeks after the World Championships; Professor Oak says the Doctor title remains out of reach at that point 125.
  • Suspects that newly appearing Fairy energy may indicate Xerneas is approaching awakening; this remains his hypothesis 12.
  • After learning that Xerneas had fought Yveltal more than three thousand years earlier, questions whether Xerneas’s slumber caused Fairy energy to disappear 75.
  • Receives help from Stone Mu Jin, who offers accommodation and staff for the professors working at his research institute 467.

Battle Strategy and Training

Chen Shi adapts training to each partner rather than building exclusively around a single team archetype 31.

  • Delegates specialist instruction: Garchomp and Salamence train Drakloak, while Sceptile trains Leafeon 6 9.
  • Uses weighted training to address Florges’s relatively weak stamina 12.
  • Teaches Charmander to conserve energy between repeated Embers and instructs Metang in Meteor Mash 34.
  • Uses Phantom Force for escape and repositioning, not only attacks, during his spar with Pheobe 32.
  • Recognizes that his varied roster is harder to coordinate in group combat than in official matches 31.
  • Avoids directly challenging Firetree without a plan because of the gap between Gym-level and Senior Elite King strength 41.
  • Gives Metang greater independence after recognizing its exceptional intelligence and battle talent, allowing it to use Steven’s raising manual for its own development 57.
  • Trains his team against the Pokémon in Professor Oak’s backyard and uses Mystery Realm Core Shards to accelerate their progress 69 80.
  • Keeps Swampert’s unusually fast Waterfall technique confidential when Pheobe asks about it 94.
  • Uses the dense energy, Type Plate projections, and Arceus’s instruction in the strange space to develop his partners far beyond his contemporaries 442.
  • Asks Flash Rayquaza to train Little Rayquaza 454.
  • Accepts Giratina’s advice that high-level partners must gain battle experience and understanding of laws rather than relying on rank alone 496.

Mega Evolution

Chen Shi achieves Mega Evolution by connecting with Swampert while holding a Key Stone, with Swampert holding its species-specific Mega Stone 6 7.

  • Temporarily enhances the Pokémon’s attributes and can change its Ability 7.
  • Initially drains Chen Shi’s stamina rapidly; he expects practice to improve his endurance 7.
  • Treats Mega Stones as future strategic assets and urges discreet collection 6 48.
  • Explains the transformation’s general value to Steven but delays fully teaching it until they are stronger 48.
  • Later demonstrates Mega Charizard X at the World Championships 117.
  • Explains that a Key Stone, the corresponding Mega Stone, and a strong bond should ordinarily allow Mega Evolution after practice 198.
  • Achieves Mega Evolution with Rayquaza during the Groudon and Kyogre crisis. His special Psychic power allows the transformation to consume his stamina rather than Rayquaza’s stored meteorite energy 250 483.

Bond Phenomenon

Chen Shi distinguishes the Bond Phenomenon from Mega Evolution: it does not require a Key Stone, Mega Stone, or other external item. It depends on an exceptional emotional bond and unity of mind and spirit between a Trainer and Pokémon 143 270.

  • First triggers it with Dragapult during his match against Lance, aided by his special Psychic power 143 181 401.
  • Initially cannot reliably repeat the transformation despite Dragapult retaining the associated Ability 181.
  • Later learns that every Pokémon species can potentially undergo it, but the emotional requirement for the first awakening is extraordinarily difficult to meet 516.
  • Once a bond becomes tangible as the Bond Phenomenon Ability, subsequent activation becomes easier 516.
  • Learns to seek the Pokémon’s most precious memories and strengthen its treasured person, relationship, or attachment rather than merely injecting power into a thread 528.

His inner embodiment induces the phenomenon in more than fifty thousand Pokémon by amplifying their treasured emotions. The resulting enhancement is normally between one and two major tiers, limited by what each body can withstand and unable to raise them beyond Second-Class Deity. Continued Psychic reinforcement also protects that army against dark matter. This mass application is demonstrated by the embodiment, not by Chen Shi acting independently at the same level of mastery 516 517.

Relationships

  • Grandpa Chen — Guardian and Breeder mentor. Prepared Mudkip for him, protected his early talent from excessive publicity, and begins teaching him family potion-making skills. Later entrusts him with improving the Potential Potion to master grade 1 3 9 80.
  • Grandma Chen — Guardian and food-making mentor. Provides customized nutrition and evolution resources, then studies his Fairy-type Pokéblock formula. Welcomes Cynthia warmly and increasingly favors her and Pheobe in the household’s affectionate teasing 9 30 159 205 206.
  • Gengar — Grandma Chen’s Pokémon and Chen Shi’s childhood companion. Cheers him up, wakes him with Lick, and guides him to Mt. Pyre’s hidden realm 1 9 18.
  • Shiny Dragapult — His first Pokémon, hatched as Dreepy from the system’s gift Egg. Chen Shi supports its evolutions and places it under experienced Dragon-type mentors. It becomes his frequent flying mount and first Bond Phenomenon partner; their affectionate teasing sometimes escalates into pranks 1 5 6 79 143 205.
  • Swampert — His grandfather’s prepared starter and first demonstrated Mega Evolution partner. Their bond centers on a promise to grow stronger and never abandon one another 1 6.
  • Florges — Rescued partner. Chen Shi gives her a flower garden and develops the food that enables her Fairy-type abilities. He reserves Mew’s Xerneas horn fragment for her and later relies on her healing abilities while assisting Hisuian Pokémon 2 4 12 13 75 408.
  • Leafeon and Togekiss — Partners rescued from starvation during his Sinnoh journey. He reassures them about their growth and refuses to let limited potential end their progress. Togepi evolves first into Togetic and later Togekiss 4 8 11 23 158.
  • Shiny Metagross — Received as Beldum through the Stone family deal. Chen Shi supports its nutrition, evolutions, and battle training, eventually allowing it greater independence because of its intelligence and talent 13 29 32 34 57 69.
  • Charizard — Becomes Chen Shi’s partner after being found as an underdeveloped Charmander in the black market. Chen Shi investigates its condition and patiently supports its recovery, then congratulates and comforts it after its final evolution 28 29 32 34 69.
  • Steven Stone — Friend, sparring partner, research collaborator, and traveling companion. Chen Shi trusts his character but initially withholds Mega Evolution’s full details. He values the friendship enough to establish fair limits on sharing stones; Steven later calls him a Devon Corporation consultant 15 17 35 48 82 179.
  • Pheobe — Entrusted to his care so she can learn about the outside world. He mentors and teases her, commissions research specimens, and arranges both covert protection and a staged scam. Eventually regards her as a younger sister 20 25 33 36 206.
  • Cynthia — Friend from Sinnoh whose indecisiveness inspired his research alias. He gives her a Togepi Egg; her grandmother initially teases her about him while she describes them as ordinary friends. Their relationship becomes romantic during the World Championships, and she later visits and stays at his family’s farm. They marry four years before the finale and have a daughter, Xiao Xi 31 34 49 108 125 157 175 561.
  • Xiao Xi — His daughter with Cynthia, aged three in the finale. He is an affectionate, playful father and brings her to Pallet Town to see Ash and Gary begin their journeys. An illusory Xiao Xi also appears in his earlier dream of family life, but is distinct from the real child in the finale 549 551 561.
  • Professor Oak — Research mentor and teacher. Recognizes Chen Shi as Severe Indecisiveness, helps investigate Friendship evolution, and promises protection when Chen Shi explains why he has concealed his talent. Later develops the Pokédex using his suggestions 62 66 311 370.
  • Gary Oak and Ash — Younger acquaintances whom he befriends at Oak’s laboratory. Gary comes to address him as Junior Martial Uncle and thanks him for his teaching; Ash asks him to accept a future challenge once he becomes an excellent Trainer 69 71 561.
  • Yuko — Neighbor and childhood friend. Chen Shi is fond of her gentle everyday manner and strong battle abilities; her familiarity with him prompts jealousy from Cynthia. He knows that her parents died in League service and that corrupt officials coveted her compensation 94 530.
  • Mew — Mythical companion, frequent instigator, and guide to the World Tree. Commonly disguises itself as an Eevee on his shoulder. Recognizes his power of the heart, gives him valuable resources, and pressures him to honor the World Tree Guardian commitment 74 75 158 263 309 525.
  • Jirachi — Mythical companion whose Psychic power and teleportation assist Chen Shi in travel, rescue plans, and the Energy Meteorite operation. Also joins his playful harassment of Dragapult 205 235 353.
