Background / History
Tang San has lived two lives. Zhu Zhuqing knows from her memories of the novel and animation that he came from the Tang Sect, and she recognizes his unusually cautious behavior as consistent with that background 36 44.
At Nuoding Academy, he becomes Yu Xiaogang’s prized disciple and works at a smithy alongside his studies. With his father absent, Xiao Wu becomes a family-like presence; by the time Zhu Zhuqing enrolls, Tang San and Xiao Wu have shared a bed for over a year 34 35.
Appearance
- Ordinary-looking boy: At eleven, his appearance contrasts with the attention drawn by Xiao Wu and Zhu Zhuqing 45.
- Plain clothing: Passersby mistake him for the girls’ errand boy because his clothes are so ordinary 44.
- Rough hands: Zhu Zhuqing notices the roughness of his hand when he apologetically shakes hers 31.
Personality
Tang San tries to be reasonable even when doing so means opposing Xiao Wu. He initially discourages her challenge to Zhu Zhuqing, then openly acknowledges her defeat after realizing that Zhu Zhuqing deliberately held back. Before the match, he also plans to provide medicinal treatment and monetary compensation if Zhu Zhuqing is injured 29 30 31.
He is protective and cautious, particularly where Xiao Wu is concerned. He prepares to intervene during her sparring matches, accompanies both girls rather than leaving them outside after dark, and insists on escorting them daily when they move off campus. Xiao Wu finds his caution excessive, while Zhu Zhuqing is surprised by its extent 31 34 36 44.
He dislikes owing favors and regards Xiao Wu’s debts as his own responsibility. His modest smithy income makes Zhu Zhuqing’s spending difficult for him to comprehend, and he worries about repaying her generosity. Despite their closeness, he is often embarrassed by suggestions that his relationship with Xiao Wu is romantic 35 36 43 45 46.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
Tang San uses his martial soul for restraint, defense, movement support, and household tasks 37 38 40 44.
- First Soul Skill: Entanglement — Sends more than a dozen arm-thick strands toward Yang Aotian from both sides 40.
- Restraint — Binds would-be thieves and suspends armed attackers in the air 37 38.
- Battlefield control — Separates a crowd from the Real Estate Exchange and repeatedly obstructs Yang Aotian’s spear attacks 37 40.
- Practical applications — Collects scattered Gold Soul Coins and cleans rooms with many strands working at once 37 44.
- Limit — Yang Aotian’s spear techniques can cut or shatter the grass, forcing Tang San to retreat 40.
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
His signature footwork allows rapid movement and evasive maneuvers 38.
- Catches Xiao Wu after Zhu Zhuqing’s roar interrupts her airborne attack 31.
- Blurs his figure while dodging a spear charge 38.
- Combines with Blue Silver Grass to cross the battlefield and assist Zhu Zhuqing’s summoned tiger 38.
- Helps him compete with Xiao Wu at an equal level when used alongside Mysterious Jade Hand 37.
Purple Demon Eye
An observation technique used to examine movements and detect brief, concealed attacks 30 40.
- Identifies Zhu Zhuqing’s gait as a profound movement technique and recognizes that her stance is not that of a novice 30.
- Allows him to perceive the unusual attack that strikes Yang Aotian while most spectators miss it 40.
Mysterious Heaven Skill
An internal cultivation technique with demonstrated protective effects 31 34.
- Circulating it prevents Zhu Zhuqing’s roar from frightening him during Xiao Wu’s rematch 31.
- Its practice has made him resistant to heat and cold, allowing him to tolerate Xiao Wu repeatedly kicking off their shared covers 34.
Mysterious Jade Hand
A technique Tang San uses to improve his chances against Xiao Wu in their usual duels 37.
- Together with Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, it gives him a chance of defeating her at the same level; his martial soul alone is often insufficient 37.
Other Skills
- Smithy work — Earns one Silver Soul Coin per day at a local smithy 35.
- Medicinal knowledge — Intends to use medicinal herbs to treat Zhu Zhuqing if Xiao Wu injures her 30.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges — A storage soul tool used to hold peaches and Xiao Wu’s belongings. It is also called Twenty-Four Bridge Bright Moon Night in the passages 33 43.
- Silent Sleeve Arrow — A concealed projectile weapon he repeatedly attempts to fire against Yang Aotian. The surrounding onlookers prevent him from using it during that exchange 40.
Relationships
- Xiao Wu — His acknowledged little sister and closest family-like companion while his father is absent. He tolerates her temper, protects her in combat, and becomes increasingly attached to her. Their closeness deepens after moving off campus, although Zhu Zhuqing’s teasing leaves him questioning whether he likes Xiao Wu romantically 29 31 34 45.
- Zhu Zhuqing — A friend and schoolmate whose restraint earns his respect. He helps with her enrollment, accompanies her shopping, and fights beside her. By age eleven, he considers both her and Xiao Wu important to him, though her true strength remains a mystery to him 31 34 38 45.
- Yu Xiaogang / Grandmaster — His teacher and eventual housemate. Yu Xiaogang regards him as a prized disciple, gives him regular lessons, and searches for him when he fails to return at his usual time 35 39 43 44.
- Old Jack — Holy Soul Village’s chief, whom Tang San initially accompanies to support during a dispute with Douluo Village. Old Jack is disappointed when Xiao Wu loses the resulting challenge 29 31.
- Grandma Ruth — Treats him affectionately because she considers him sensible and well behaved; she gives him peaches when he meets her and Zhu Zhuqing in Nuoding City 33.
- Xiao Chenyu — A school enemy previously beaten by Tang San and Xiao Wu. Tang San resents his bullying and involvement in the Real Estate Exchange incident 41 42.
