Background / History
Laozi leads the Human Sect and stands as the eldest among the Three Pure Ones. During the establishment of the new Heavenly Court, he sends his benevolent corpse avatar to serve there, while the Saints debate the appointments of Haotian, Yaochi, and the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors. 15
Before Hong Ze's rise, Laozi and Yuanshi Tianzun search the Primordial World for the Child of the Great Dao. They investigate Hong Ze but dismiss him because his apparent cultivation is only at the True Immortal realm; Hong Ze's concealed heavenly secrets prevent them from discovering his significance. 35 46
Personality
Laozi is consistently composed and guarded in public, frequently maintaining an expressionless demeanor even when Hong Ze's knowledge of fate or the Human Race unsettles him. He responds to probing questions with measured, orthodox answers and often redirects questions back to the speaker. 139 140
Hong Ze regards Laozi as an opportunist whose proclaimed purity and non-action conceal calculated political maneuvering. Laozi's concern over predictions that diminish his future status—especially the Human Sect's transformation and his disappearance from the Three Realms—reveals the importance he places on his own position and influence. 122 141
He is also pragmatic. Once persuaded that cooperation benefits the Human Sect, he accepts Hong Ze as a foremost disciple, publicly entrusts the sect to him, and supports plans intended to protect the Jie Sect and Human Race from the coming tribulation. 123 144

Story Role / Major Arcs
Three Sects Dao Discussion Assembly
Laozi joins Yuanshi Tianzun in challenging Tongtian's decision to make Hong Ze the Jie Sect's Eldest Senior Brother. He establishes the Heavenly Ladder as the assembly's first trial and gives the Taiji Diagram to Xuandu to gather Human Race destiny. 52 53 64
Hong Ze's Kongtong Seal and ability to grant Fuxi fifty percent of the Human Race's destiny secure victory for the Jie Sect. Laozi regrets that Hong Ze became Tongtian's disciple rather than joining the Human Sect from the start. 66
Taking Hong Ze as a Disciple
After Tongtian and Nüwa arrange matters around the Human Race, Laozi agrees to jointly teach Hong Ze. Hong Ze then pressures him with the Twelve Rank World-Destroying Black Lotus and God Slaying Spear, obtaining two-tenths of the Human Race's destiny and formally becoming Laozi's disciple. 122 123
Laozi later entrusts the Human Sect to Hong Ze before entering seclusion, publicly equating Hong Ze's authority with his own. 144
Investiture of the Gods
Laozi initially refuses to name any Human Sect disciples on the Investiture of the Gods, citing his limited number of disciples and the innate luck of the Innate Human Race. 167 170
When Hongjun Daozu permits Hong Ze to determine the list's terms, Laozi supports the resulting arrangement by writing his own name on the Investiture of the Gods. 174 175
Cultivation and the Xuanyuan Era
Laozi and Tongtian question Hong Ze's cultivation path and learn that the Jie Sect possesses eight Quasi-Sages who advanced through Law Power rather than Three Corpses Severing. This leads Laozi to reconsider the Saint path and merge his Good Corpse with Pill Law. 213 214 215 218
He later assists Tongtian in refining the Human Race's sacred Dao weapon, the Xuanyuan Sword, for Xuanyuan Huangdi. 220 221
Notable Quotes
“All matters of the Human Sect shall be handled entirely by Hong Ze. Hong Ze's words and actions represent this poor Daoist, and his decisions are this poor Daoist's decisions.” 144
