Tongtian presides over the Jie Sect from Biyou Palace on Golden Turtle Island. He teaches without discrimination: both his many disciples and untransformed demon beasts are permitted to hear his sermons on the Dao 1. His broad acceptance of disciples becomes a central point of conflict with Yuanshi Tianzun and Laozi, who criticize the Jie Sect as an unruly mixture of beings 48 167.

Initially unaware that the Investiture of the Gods is intended to devastate the Jie Sect, Tongtian prioritizes expanding the sect's prosperity and leaves much of its administration to his eldest disciple, Hong Ze 16 21. Hong Ze's successes—including the rapid rise of multiple Great Luo Golden Immortals, the construction of the Nine-Tiered Biyou Palace, and the consolidation of sect destiny—gradually convince Tongtian that his disciple is indispensable 20 128 137.

Hong Ze later reveals that the Saints' conventional paths are incomplete and that Tongtian's Primordial Violet Qi obstructs his ability to truly prove the Dao through Law Power. Though initially incredulous, Tongtian accepts the evidence of Hong Ze's Demon Law and Pangu Law of Power, then begins reconsidering his own Sword Law and path to sainthood 131 133 134.

During the preparations for the Investiture of the Gods, Tongtian increasingly recognizes the hostility directed at his sect. He rejects Yuanshi Tianzun's demand that Jie Sect disciples fill the list and ultimately signs his own name on the Investiture of the Gods as part of Hong Ze's strategy 167 170 174.
