| First Appearance | Chapter 1, “Sukuna... had amnesia?” 1 |
Power Progression
Sukuna’s progression centers on recovering forgotten abilities rather than advancing through new formal grades.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Revival: one finger | 1 | Awakens after Itadori swallows his first finger. Retains powerful cursed energy and instinctive combat responses, but cannot remember his identity or basic jujutsu knowledge. |
| Two fingers | 2 | Itadori consumes a second finger. Sukuna remains cooperative rather than attempting to seize permanent control. |
| Reverse Cursed Technique recovered | 8 | Taking control of the body allows him to heal Itadori’s injuries almost instantly. He also recognizes that he can heal others. |
| Long-range slashing recovered | 10 | Exorcises a curse with an attack that Gojo observes can strike from over 300 meters away without a windup. |
| Combat instincts reawakened | 11 | Sparring with Gojo brings out defensive cursed-energy reinforcement, rapid barrages of Dismantle, and detailed awareness of the surrounding terrain. |
| Flame ability recovered | 15 | Instinctively invokes “■ Open,” producing red, yellow, and purple flames that destroy a curse and its vines. |
| Third finger | 23 26 | Itadori consumes the finger recovered from the detention center’s special grade curse. Sukuna subsequently sleeps for two days. |
| Innate Domain takes shape | 25 26 | His previously dark inner world becomes a sea of blood surrounding a mound of bones beneath an enormous spine. A dream supplies a fragmentary image of his past. |
| Domain hand sign and name recovered | 30 | Recalls the hand sign and “Malevolent Shrine,” but interrupts the expansion after becoming embarrassed by the name. |
| Successful Domain Expansion | 32 | Expands an open domain while silently reciting its name and attempting a ten-meter radius. Its slashes destroy the ground, causing the central structure to sink. |
| Slash mechanics understood | 33 | Studies his technique before teaching Itadori and distinguishes the two slash types, Cleave and Hachi, which he had previously used without consciously differentiating them. |
Background / History
According to Gojo and Fushiguro, Sukuna was a human sorcerer a thousand years earlier who stood at the pinnacle of the golden age of jujutsu. His title, King of Curses, refers to his supremacy in cursed energy, jujutsu, and personal strength—not authority over other cursed spirits 5 6.
His present incarnation begins when Itadori swallows one of his fingers to survive a curse attack. Sukuna instinctively destroys the creature, then discovers that he cannot remember even his own name. He initially mistakes Fushiguro’s reference to “Yuji Itadori” for his identity before realizing that he is another soul inhabiting the boy’s body 1.
His memory loss does not erase all practical knowledge. He recognizes phones, understands modern food, and demonstrates polished Western table manners. Principal Yaga explains that incarnated individuals inherit some memories from their vessels; Sukuna believes he received general knowledge rather than Itadori’s complete personal history 17 18.
Later dreams suggest a more complicated past than the historical accounts alone convey. One shows a relaxed figure he identifies as his former self wearing a white kimono beside a small white fox. The bloody form of his Innate Domain makes him suspect that he once killed many people and animals, but he explicitly says that he has not recovered his memories 25 26.
Appearance
- Incarnated appearance: Shares Itadori’s pink-haired body, with black cursed markings appearing when he takes control 1 2.
- Eyes and expression: Red to dark crimson eyes, sharper-looking facial contours, and a more mature, restrained, sinister presence than Itadori 2 16.
- Markings: Intricate black markings on his face and ring-like markings around his wrists 1.
- Inner-world clothing: Appears in a white kimono; a dream of his past self features similar clothing 25 27.
- Style: Enjoys posing before mirrors and trying different outfits, including hoodies, coats, and a burgundy shirt with a black suit jacket 4 16.
Personality
Sukuna is vain and protective of his “kingly dignity,” but easily embarrassed. Learning that he might resemble an ugly cursed spirit leaves him withdrawn; discovering that “Ryomen” is not his surname humiliates him in front of the second-years. He enjoys praise, admires his reflection, and interprets the students’ snack gifts as proof of his exceptional charm 1 2 6 14 16.
Despite his reputation, he is considerate toward Itadori and reluctant to damage the boy’s relationships. He tolerates the second-years’ initial suspicion without retaliating and refuses casual daytime takeovers that might attract the higher-ups’ attention. He wants to preserve their shared life, while remaining uncertain whether recovering his old memories could change him 6 11 14.
He prefers comfort, desserts, and ranged fighting to strenuous training or direct physical contact. His aversion to dirt and severe discomfort around clustered, grotesque curses can overwhelm his composure. Nevertheless, he stays with Itadori throughout frightening training and becomes openly vicious when protecting the boy’s companions 11 13 22 39.
The students’ acceptance affects him deeply. Saved snacks and a surprise birthday party bring him close to tears, though he tries to conceal his feelings behind loud demands for food or smug remarks 27 38 39.
Abilities & Skills
Incarnation and Shared Consciousness
- Communicates with Itadori internally and can manifest a mouth on his face, the back of his hand, or his palm without fully taking control 2 3.
- Usually experiences the outside world through Itadori’s sight and hearing; full bodily control lets him directly feel sunlight, wind, and other sensations 4.
- Has an agreement with Itadori for three hours of freedom each night 8 12 38.
- Can receive Itadori inside his Innate Domain without switching places, allowing the two to sit together and later share a bed 27 48.
- Does not have unrestricted access to Itadori’s memories: he did not know the boy’s phone password or initially recognize his name 17 18.
Cursed Energy and Combat Senses
- Possesses immense reserves even with only two fingers; his energy forms a defensive barrier capable of intercepting Gojo’s opening punch during training 11.
- Retains combat reflexes despite amnesia and can move at speeds difficult to follow with the naked eye 1 11.
- Extends his mental awareness across several hundred meters to track terrain and cursed-energy signatures 11 23.
- Detects a curse forming near his finger at the Yoshino home and later memorizes Mahito’s cursed-energy residue for tracking 43 46.
- Overwhelms the detention center’s special grade curse with his presence, fists, kicks, and eventual finishing slash 22 23.
Reverse Cursed Technique
- Heals Itadori’s severe training injuries in approximately a second after taking control 8.
- Restores Itadori’s exhausted condition sufficiently to support prolonged nighttime training 13 14.
- Confidently states that he can heal other people, making his ability valuable to the school’s students 8 9 48.
- Cannot resurrect the dead; finding the detention center’s victims forces him and Itadori to confront this limit 21.
Slashing Technique
- Uses Dismantle for long-range attacks, intersecting barrages, and net-like patterns 10 11.
- Cuts passages through buildings and precisely divides a birthday cake into equal portions 23 38.
- Studies and teaches two slash types under the names used in the text 33:
| Slash | Function | Recommended Use |
|---|---|---|
| Cleave | An ordinary slash whose damage increases with the cursed energy invested 33. | Opponents comparable to or stronger than the user, where adjustable attack power matters 33. |
| Hachi | Damage depends on the difference between the user’s cursed-energy reserves and the opponent’s; a sufficiently large advantage permits a one-hit kill 33. | Quickly clearing weaker opponents, especially Grade 4 and Grade 3 curses 33. |
- A slash that catches Mahito in the crossfire damages both his body and soul, leaving an arm injury he cannot immediately repair 46.
- Powerful ranged attacks can cause collateral damage: saving Nagi Yoshino destroys her kitchen 43.
Flames
- Activates the ability by reciting “■ Open” 15 31.
- Produces dazzling tricolored flames capable of rapidly destroying a curse and its vines 15.
- Considers the flames difficult to control because even slight contact can reduce a target to ash; they may also interfere with Itadori’s close-range fighting 31.
- Prefers to keep them as a concealed trump card rather than Itadori’s first technique lesson 31.
Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine
- Creates an Open Domain, allowing escape from its range in exchange for strengthening its technique’s effects 33.
- Manifests a blood-covered landscape, a mound of skulls, and a temple-like structure with a blue roof, red pillars, four mouths, and enormous ribs 32.
- Subjects living and nonliving matter within range to endless invisible slashes until the domain is dispelled 33.
- Keeps its center fixed at the activation point even when its structure sinks as the ground is destroyed 33.
- Sukuna believes he can stop the automatic slashes mentally and must activate flames separately; these conclusions remain unverified during the initial analysis 33.
- Hides the real name because he associates it with cooking. He also invents replacement names for his technique and domain 30 32 48.
Cooking and Instruction
- Makes cakes praised by the students and shares a separate cake with Gojo 20.
- Carefully prepares Itadori’s slash lesson overnight rather than relying on his own instinctive use of the technique 33.
- Advises Itadori on cursed-energy generation through negative emotions and continues offering technique pointers between missions 13 40.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sukuna’s Fingers — Special grade cursed objects whose consumption restores portions of his incarnation; scattered fingers attract curses 1 2 23.
- White kimono — Clothing purchased for him by Itadori, matching his preference for white and the garment seen in his dream 20 25.
- Modern wardrobe — Outfits purchased by Gojo after a shopping trip, washed and delivered to the school 16 17.
- Birthday scarf — A cherished gift whose softness reminds him of Itadori’s warmth; he immediately removes it upon learning it has not been washed 39.
- Inner-domain house and bed — A small wooden house appears after a painful nightmare. It contains white bedding, a two-meter-square bed, and pearl-like lighting 47 48.
Relationships
- Yuji Itadori — Vessel, closest companion, and student. Sukuna calls him “Tiger,” protects him physically and emotionally, and accepts his comparison to an older brother 4 21 33 41 48.
- Satoru Gojo — Trainer and supporter who wants Sukuna to find a genuine place at Jujutsu High. They bond over desserts but frequently clash over Gojo’s teasing and pranks; Sukuna nicknames him “Three-Year-Old Satoru” 10 12 20 40.
- Megumi Fushiguro — Teaches him basic jujutsu knowledge and cautions against unsafe public appearances. Later offers to let him pet a Divine Dog as thanks for saving it 6 8 29.
- Maki Zenin — Initially wary of him, but agrees to help while warning against trouble. Later joins the welcoming celebrations and pursues him with cake after discovering that she has not personally met his fully manifested self 6 27 38.
- Nobara Kugisaki, Toge Inumaki, and Panda — School companions who grow friendlier, bring snacks, and welcome his return after his two-day absence 14 27.
- Kento Nanami — Earns Sukuna’s immediate respect through his neat appearance, seriousness, and dependable adult demeanor 41.
- Nagi and Junpei Yoshino — Rescued from a curse at their home. Sukuna subsequently helps track Mahito, but later prevents Itadori from revealing his presence to Junpei 43 46 49.
- Mahito — Enemy whose body and soul are injured by Sukuna’s slash. Sukuna records his residue and intends to support Itadori in confronting him 46 48.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Acceptance at Jujutsu High
- Itadori’s enrollment postpones their execution, while their continued survival depends on maintaining the appearance that Itadori suppresses Sukuna 2 4.
- Gojo’s training helps recover Sukuna’s abilities. His claim that the higher-ups might imprison them for healing is privately admitted to be an exaggeration intended to motivate them 9.
- Gossip about Gojo carrying the unconscious Sukuna bridal-style helps dissolve the students’ fear of him 12 14.
- The students celebrate his birthday with a cake marked 1016, strengthening his attachment to their shared life 38 39.
- He cannot openly participate in the Goodwill Event: revealing their freely cooperative switching could give the conservatives grounds to execute Itadori 39.
Eishu Juvenile Detention Center
- Agrees to protect Itadori’s companions and punish the special grade after the discovery of dead inmates 21.
- Takes over when Nobara disappears, sends Fushiguro to find her, and brutally attacks the special grade before finishing it with Dismantle 22 23.
- Recovers a finger and rushes to assist the other students after he and Itadori realize they have forgotten them 23.
Mahito and the Yoshino Family
- Reassures Itadori after he unknowingly kills a transfigured human, helping him regain the resolve to stop further victims 41.
- Saves Nagi from a curse at her home, inadvertently injuring Mahito during the attack 43 46.
- Helps investigate Mahito’s sewer hideout, but the trail leads to an empty meeting place and transfigured humans rather than Mahito himself 46.
- Returns from another two-day absence to share the new comforts of his Innate Domain with Itadori; afterward, he keeps his incarnation secret from the newly enrolled Junpei 48 49.
Notable Quotes
“That ‘Sukuna’ you mentioned... ...Is that me?” 1
“No wonder I was the strongest a thousand years ago. Healing, physical attacks, ranged attacks—and now I’ve got magic attacks, too. Add in Domain Expansion as my ultimate, and I’m an entire party by myself.” 15
“You were saving them!” — Reassuring Itadori after the death of a transfigured human 41
Trivia
- “Ryomen” is not his surname. Itadori explains that it refers to his two faces; Sukuna’s demand to be called “Ryomen” becomes an embarrassing joke among the second-years 6 7.
- He can taste human food but gains no energy from eating it 2.
- He names the curse-filled training area Trypophobia Forest 33.
- His invented ability names are inconsistent across the passages: he calls his technique “Yama Hell” when questioned, but later recalls “Demon Prison” and “Demon-Subduing Prison Heaven” as his replacement names 32 48.
