Ordinary School Life and Mahito

Junpei attended Satozakura High School as a second-year student. Constant bullying made him avoid crowds and frequently skip school. He later described ordinary student life as “hell” when explaining why he wanted to become a jujutsu sorcerer 49 50.

After seeking out Mahito, Junpei learned about curses and gained power he considered using for revenge. His hatred of humanity initially left him indifferent to Mahito’s experiments on human victims. Mahito also instructed him to get close to Yuji Itadori 41 42 45.

The Attack on His Home

Nanami assigned Itadori to investigate Junpei’s connection to the movie theater deaths. Instead, Itadori quickly befriended Junpei and his mother over dinner. Their warmth made Junpei reconsider revenge: he did not want to become Itadori’s enemy or disappoint his mother 42.

Mahito planted a Sukuna finger in the Yoshino home, attracting a curse that nearly attacked Nagi. Sukuna intervened through Itadori’s body and killed it with a distant slash, although the attack destroyed the kitchen. Junpei summoned Moon Dregs to shield his mother, then demanded an explanation from Itadori 42 43 44.

When Itadori identified Mahito as the culprit, Junpei initially rejected the accusation. Recalling Mahito’s contempt for humans and his transfigured victims, however, he realized that he and his mother might be treated the same way. Itadori insisted on accompanying him to investigate and arranged protection for Nagi before they left 45.

Joining Jujutsu High

Junpei led Itadori to Mahito’s sewer meeting place. Seeing the transfigured humans as potential victims like himself or his mother changed his understanding of Mahito; the empty hideout extinguished his remaining hope. Jujutsu High subsequently arranged questioning, protection, and relocation for the Yoshino family 46.

Junpei chose to enroll partly because the school could protect his mother from Mahito, and privately because he wanted to stay closer to Itadori. He passed Yaga’s admission test and joined Itadori’s first-year class. Although initially unsettled by the tiny class and Megumi teaching lessons, he became an attentive student who asked pertinent questions 49 50.

Personality

Junpei’s mother is the most important person in his life. He is willing to endure hardship for her and would rather lose his newfound power than expose her to harm. The threat to Nagi ultimately outweighs his dependence on and respect for Mahito 42 45.

His timid manner conceals resentment and a capacity for cold aggression. During Yaga’s interview, he drops his gentle demeanor to explain how painful ordinary school life had been. Gojo recognizes that he is less meek than he appears 49.

Past experiences have made Junpei highly sensitive to other people’s emotions. He recognizes Itadori’s concern as genuine and cries when Itadori refuses to let him face danger alone. At Jujutsu High, he cautiously tries to build friendships rather than continue avoiding people 45 50.
