Background / History

Loss of Ryoji

About thirty years before Haruto’s Final Selection, Godogawa’s fifteen-year-old son, Ryoji, died in the demon attack that also killed Haruto’s grandfather, Takanashi Sōma. Ryoji had only recently joined the Demon Slayer Corps. His ashes were returned to Godogawa, who kept them in his bedroom 3 10 40.

The same demon later killed Haruto’s father, Yūsei, and left a message in blood threatening Sōma’s descendants. Godogawa consequently regarded Haruto’s exceptional looks as a mortal danger rather than a blessing 40.

Raising Haruto

Haruto initially lived with his great-uncle after losing his parents. When the great-uncle died, Godogawa attended the funeral; Haruto bowed to him three times, followed him to the Swordsmith Village, and became his apprentice. Godogawa intended to keep him safely within the village for the rest of his life 18 40.

By age five, Haruto was helping transport charcoal despite Godogawa’s initial objections. Godogawa taught him sword-forging techniques, but the child preferred wielding Nichirin Blades to making them. Neighbors teased Godogawa about having unexpectedly acquired a grandson 226.

Haruto’s Swordsmanship Training

When Haruto abandoned swordsmithing around age eleven, Godogawa began teaching him the basic Breathing Style and swordsmanship he knew. He was not a dedicated trainer of prospective demon slayers; Haruto’s eventual command of Flame Breathing also required two and a half years of practice and occasional guidance from Shinjuro Rengoku 1.

Godogawa repeatedly discouraged Haruto from becoming a swordsman and urged him to withdraw from Final Selection if necessary. Nevertheless, he stayed up late preparing two hundred rice balls for the journey. Seeing Haruto depart in his blue-green haori reminded him painfully of Ryoji’s departure thirty years earlier 1 3.

Before Haruto’s first mission, Godogawa considered revealing the demon responsible for Ryoji’s death, but feared that Haruto would seek revenge against an enemy beyond his abilities. He kept the story to himself and prepared food instead. Later, he helped Haruto pack for his move to Mount Sagiri 10 19.

Explaining His Marriage Demands

Godogawa repeatedly pressed Haruto to marry, first questioning him about Makomo and later mistaking Kanae Kocho for a prospective bride. He eventually explained that he wanted Haruto to preserve the Takanashi family line because the demon hunting its descendants might still kill him 9 19 39 40.

Haruto rejected having children merely to secure an heir while the threat remained, arguing that he could not ask a woman to become his widow and raise children who might suffer the same fate. Godogawa was left ashamed by the criticism. By the time Haruto and Shinobu Kocho formally became a couple, he had stopped nagging Haruto about both his dangerous career and his marriage prospects 40 41 158.

Swordsmith Village Attack

During the village attack, Godogawa spotted an Upper Rank demon crouching outside his window and angrily reprimanded it for peeking into the house. The demon lunged at him, but Muichiro Tokito severed its hand before it could reach him 184 193.

Godogawa sprained his ankle after stepping backward in fright and falling. Haruto cared for him at the Butterfly Mansion for a day, only for Godogawa to insist that he needed no help and send him back to his own work 193.

Appearance

  • Build and age: A small elderly man with a stern face, short, thick eyebrows, and pronounced wrinkles 3 40.
  • Mask: Usually wears a Hyottoko Mask, like the other village swordsmiths 3.
  • Clothing: Wears wooden geta and a blue-green haori embroidered with a landscape or mountain pattern 3 9 10.
  • Workshop traces: Carries a smithing hammer, and the scorching smell of flames clings to him after work 3.

Personality

Godogawa conceals affection behind blunt criticism and practical care. Haruto’s startled cry makes him rush over without putting on his clogs, yet he offers no explicit reassurance. Before dangerous journeys, he prepares food while leaving his fears unspoken 3 10.

His protectiveness is rooted in grief: thoughts of Ryoji’s ashes make his hands tremble, and he refuses to draw Haruto into his own desire for revenge. His persistent matchmaking mixes genuine anxiety with intrusive questioning and comic scolding. He nevertheless accepts Haruto’s objection to marrying solely for an heir and later becomes less controlling 9 10 40 41 158.

He is also proud of his independence. After the village attack, he avoids explaining his embarrassing fall and rejects continued care for what he considers a minor injury 193.
