Power Progression
Saitama already possesses his overwhelming strength when introduced; his documented advancement concerns professional hero rank rather than newly acquired combat power 6 16.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| S-Class hero; initially rank 17 | 16 18 | Earns a perfect 100 on the Hero Certification Exam after Bai Ye coaches him to answer written questions from a weaker person’s perspective. His initial placement at the bottom of S-Class is confirmed on the Hero Roster. |
| S-Class, rank 15 | 25 | Promoted from rank 17 after the Hero Association gives him and Bai Ye joint credit for resolving Vaccine Man’s Dragon-level disaster, despite Saitama repeatedly identifying Bai Ye as the actual victor. |
Background / History
Saitama was bullied as a student, when he was still weak. Remembering that experience helps him understand Bai Ye’s exam advice: instead of assuming every monster can be defeated immediately, he must consider how a weaker hero could protect civilians. He subsequently grew strong through effort, went bald, and became invincible; the narration also describes his combat talent as allowing him to keep breaking his limiter 16 25.
A little over three years before his registration, Saitama saved Double-Chin Boy, the grandson of the wealthy Agoni. In gratitude, Agoni funded the establishment of the Hero Association. Saitama nevertheless remained unaware that the organization existed—and did not recognize himself as the unnamed hero in Bai Ye’s account of its founding 2 15.
Before becoming a professional hero, he supported himself with occasional part-time work and lived in Z City’s abandoned district because of its exceptionally cheap rent and utilities. He did not report his monster victories; King happened to be present at several of them and received the credit instead 4 6 14.
Appearance
Saitama has a completely bald head, introduced as smooth and gleaming in the sunlight. His usual expression is simple and guileless, shifting into a more sharply drawn “serious” appearance when he concentrates 1 16.
- Hero outfit: A yellow superhero suit with a white cape. A clothing shop owner who supported his ambitions made it especially for him, giving it lasting sentimental value 19.
- Casual clothing: Wears an “OPPAI” sweatshirt during his Hero Association orientation 17.
- Other clothing: Owns a short-sleeved shirt printed with “hage,” meaning “bald”; it is destroyed by Genos’s incineration blast 31 32.
Personality
Saitama calls himself a “hero for fun,” but hero work is his greatest passion. He generally treats monsters as minor obstacles because they pose so little danger to him. He hopes to encounter opponents strong enough to make him serious, yet does not go looking for trouble when none appear 10 20.
He is modest and unwilling to take another hero’s credit. When reporters attribute Vaccine Man’s defeat to him, he repeatedly points out that Bai Ye won. Their refusal to believe a B-Class hero could defeat a Dragon-level monster leaves him questioning the Association’s hierarchy and whether professional hero work matches his original ideals 22 23.
Despite his poverty, he does not demand food from Bai Ye or consider taking it by force. After accepting dinner invitations, he offers help and brings ingredients and seasonings so that he is not merely taking advantage of his neighbor 5 6 10.
His competitiveness is much stronger in video games than in discussions of his physical strength. Losing makes him irritable and determined to practice, but he never attacks an opponent over a game. He is also sensitive about his baldness and dislikes the prospect of receiving a hero name built around it 18 21 33.
Abilities & Skills
Overwhelming Physical Strength
Bai Ye regards Saitama as the pinnacle of the world’s power. Saitama’s own description of the supposedly dangerous monsters around his home is simply that they are small fry he can finish with one punch 6 10.
- Completes the Hero Certification Exam’s physical events with ease, setting a running record and exceeding the testing equipment’s limits 16.
- Casually breaks Hammerhead’s stolen battle suit 49.
- Jumps through the House of Evolution’s underground ceiling and breaks all the way to the surface when rushing to a supermarket sale 45.
Speed and Jumping
Saitama’s apparent flight is produced by powerful leaps rather than a separate flying ability 19 21.
- Produces multiple afterimages during the exam’s side-to-side jumping event without using Serious Series movements 16.
- Immediately pulls far ahead of Bai Ye’s Body Flicker Technique during their race 19.
- Can leap directly from Z City to A City, though excessive force and poor navigation send him away from the intended destination 19.
- His sense of direction is a practical limitation: he loses both the outward and return races because he cannot find his way 19 20.
Durability
Saitama remains unharmed beside Genos during an incineration blast that burns the surrounding mosquitoes to ash. His clothes are destroyed, but he casually praises the attack as an effective mosquito killer 31 32.
- Shields Genos from part of the shock wave caused by Vaccine Man’s attack 31.
- Vaccine Man recognizes that attacking Saitama is not a viable option 31.
Gaming
Saitama regularly plays fighting games, including The King of Fighters, but his physical superiority does not translate into exceptional gaming talent 25.
- Loses ten consecutive matches to Bai Ye, even as Bai Ye reduces his Sharingan use and tries to go easy on him 21.
- Initially dominates the inexperienced Vaccine Man, then becomes evenly matched with him as Vaccine Man learns the controls 25.
- Continues practicing and issuing rematch challenges despite repeated losing streaks 25 40.
Practical Limitations
- Navigation: Needs directions to the Hero Association and repeatedly requires Bai Ye’s help after getting lost 15 19 20.
- Specialized techniques: Recognizes Bai Ye’s strength but cannot explain how his intangibility and Kamui-enhanced attacks work 44.
- Mosquito-catching: Repeatedly fails to catch or kill an ordinary-looking mosquito despite his overwhelming combat ability 29.
Relationships
- Bai Ye — Next-door neighbor, friend, regular dining host, and gaming rival. Bai Ye explains professional hero work, coaches him for the certification exam, and retrieves him when he gets lost. With Saitama’s permission, he places a Flying Thunder God Formula on his back to make future rescues easier 1 5 15 16 20 21.
- Vaccine Man — Fellow neighbor and frequent gaming opponent after Bai Ye subjugates the monster. Their matches develop into an evenly balanced rivalry, and they practice together before Saitama challenges Bai Ye again 25 28 33 40.
- Genos — Fellow S-Class hero and ally. Saitama checks on him after the Mosquito Girl battle but is relieved when Genos becomes Bai Ye’s disciple rather than his own. Genos initially mistakes Saitama for another of Bai Ye’s disciples 31 32 33 34.
- King — Beneficiary of misattributed victories. Witnesses credit King for several powerful monsters that Saitama actually defeated, helping establish King’s S-Class reputation 4 14.
- Agoni — Founded the Hero Association after Saitama saved his grandson. Saitama does not realize his rescue inspired the organization 2 15.
- Fubuki / Hellish Blizzard — Meets her at Bai Ye’s home and asks whether she and Bai Ye have settled their disagreement, primarily because their conflict disturbed the neighbors 40 41.
- Sneck — Conducts Saitama’s professional hero orientation. Saitama’s lounging posture and bubble gum frustrate him, culminating in a burst bubble splattering gum over his face 17.
- Dr. Genus — Wants Saitama captured for bodily examination after footage attracts attention to his unusual physique. Saitama joins the expedition against the House of Evolution to stop the harassment 35 39 41.
