Later demonstrated strength, still below Greater Yokai 131 Defeats Ryuura, Kyora, and Shuura without injury, then lifts the 100,000-jin Refining Furnace effortlessly with one arm. Penglai Immortal explicitly notes that he has not reached the Greater Yokai life tier.

Background / History

Before following Mingye, Chongli lived at the bottom of yokai society and could have died at any moment. Despite his weak demon power, he managed to steal a treasure from the Earth Dragon Clan. Mingye recognized the potential in his trace of Zhu Yan blood and allowed him to remain at his side 21 115.

Chongli pledged to fight for the Wolf Tribe and received Mingye’s cultivation teachings. By the time Mingye became a Greater Yokai, Chongli had followed him for a little over two years and regarded that service as the turning point of his life 21 115.

Appearance

  • Normal form: A small, golden-furred monkey yokai, initially easy to underestimate as little more than a mascot 21 22.
  • Enlarged form: A powerful golden ape whose fists can pulverize enemy yokai 23 24.
  • Bloodline transformation: Becomes increasingly similar to Zhu Yan as his ancestral bloodline develops 84 100 101.
  • Largest documented form: A giant ape the size of a small mountain, visible across Horai Immortal Island 131.

Personality

Chongli’s defining trait is absolute loyalty to Mingye. He worries about his master after the duel with Tōga, angrily rejects suggestions that human soldiers could have injured him, and is prepared to confront Kirinmaru even without any assurance of victory. He considers his life Mingye’s to command 34 46 115.

He trains diligently because he wants to be useful rather than a burden. That concern persists after his near-fatal battle with the Northern Country’s leaders: even while badly injured, he fears delaying Mingye’s plans 52 109.

His devotion is tempered by practical judgment. He stays behind when exhausted rather than impede Mingye, and recognizes that Slay Gods and Demons is warning him not to interrupt cultivation. He also deliberately pressures Tōtōsai to put his best effort into forging a suitable weapon 44 46 56.

Against enemies, Chongli is aggressive, mocking, and brutal. He refuses to retreat from the Ice Bear King and Ice Demon King, ridicules the Four War Gods’ claims to divinity, and kills Faming without hesitation. He prefers fierce battles to a prolonged search and shows an enthusiastic interest in eating powerful yokai 103 123 127 128 136.

Abilities & Skills

Zhu Yan Bloodline and Transformation

Chongli’s inherited Zhu Yan blood is the foundation of his unusual strength and growth potential 21 81.

  • Enlarges his body and sends his blood energy boiling to increase combat strength 22.
  • Develops a more beastlike form through ancestral reversion 100 101.
  • Carries the enormous Ice Wolf King’s body with ease 84.
  • Lifts the 100,000-jin Refining Furnace in one hand, then carries it alongside the frozen Four War Gods 131.
  • His early transformation does not make him equal to the Leopard King; their first exchange leaves a claw mark on his fist 23.

Blood Energy Method and Breathing Method

Mingye’s methods strengthen Chongli’s body, demon power, and ancestral bloodline 52 66.

  • Unlock inherited knowledge, including a Bloodline Method that strengthens his physique 52.
  • Possess healing capabilities and help him survive the Ice Demon King’s poison long enough for treatment 109.
  • Chongli is entrusted with teaching the complete methods to the Five Demon Wolves 66.

Forbidden Blood Energy Technique

Chongli can temporarily force out greater strength through a forbidden technique within the Blood Energy Method 103.

  • Swells his muscles and powers a final staff strike that shatters the Ice Bear King’s bones and destroys much of the Ice Demon King’s body 103.
  • Leaves his body limp and unable to fight afterward 103.
  • Does not kill either opponent; their exceptional survivability allows them to endure the blow 103.

Staff Combat and Physical Strength

Chongli favors overwhelming force over elaborate techniques 101 103.

  • Smashes ordinary Ice Wolves with single blows; one later swing kills dozens 61 75.
  • Initially suppresses the Ice Bear King and Ice Demon King while fighting both alone 101.
  • Sweeps aside incoming demon-power projectiles and forces seawater apart with his staff 126 127.
  • Shatters Genro’s shell in two blows while Genro’s core essence remains sealed 127.
  • His demon-power reserves and stamina are weaker than those of the Northern Country’s veteran clan leaders, making prolonged combat dangerous 101 103.

Cloud-Somersaulting Method

An inherited movement technique awakened through bloodline cultivation 52.

  • Initially travels by enormous leaps and has not yet gained flight during the journey to Dog Castle 22 41.
  • Later rides clouds to escape Mingye’s spreading cold and carry out battlefield orders 61 93.
  • Eventually keeps pace with Entei on golden auspicious clouds 123.

Scouting and Perception

  • Senses the approaching Leopard Army and notices the unusual nature of the Dog Tribe’s concealing mist 22 28.
  • Investigates the Northern Country and reports on Fūzetsuga’s tribe, strength, and temperament 81.
  • Reports the approach of Fūzetsuga’s 71,000-yokai army and estimates its arrival time 97.

Vulnerabilities

  • Greater Yokai pressure remains dangerous: Tōga’s aura forces him to his knees, and he later retreats from the clash between Sesshomaru and the King of the Underworld 29 124.
  • Reverend Baixin’s purifying golden light suppresses 80% of his demon power 135.
  • His healing equipment cannot immediately repair catastrophic injuries or neutralize the Ice Demon King’s poison 109.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Healing Gem — Obtained from the Earth Dragon Clan. Rapidly heals his wounds during the Leopard Army battle; Chongli also uses it to keep a captured Ice Wolf alive. After the Northern Country battle, it can only prevent his injuries from worsening 24 62 109.
  • Bone Club → Ruyi Jingu Bang — His weapon develops through successive forging upgrades:
    • Collects bones from tens of thousands of yokai slain by Mingye and commissions Tōtōsai to forge a heavy staff. The available bones cannot support his requested size-changing ability 55 56.
    • Wields the resulting Bone Club against the Ice Wolves 60 61.
    • Hairinbō later upgrades it into a more powerful iron club 93.
    • Further reforging incorporates gathered materials, diamond essence, and a Bokusen Tree Branch supplied by Mingye. The finished Ruyi Jingu Bang weighs 13,500 jin and changes size at will, though it cannot become a pillar large enough to support the heavens 101.

Relationships

  • Mingye — Master, cultivation teacher, and benefactor. Recognizes Chongli’s potential, rewards his service, supplies weapon materials, and personally expels the poison that nearly kills him 21 66 101 109.
  • King of the Underworld — Mingye’s independently conscious clone, whom Chongli accompanies after the original body enters the Underworld. Chongli serves him with the same immediate obedience and public devotion 118 123 127 131.
  • Five Demon Wolves — Fellow defenders of the Wolf Tribe and students of the complete cultivation methods Chongli is ordered to teach. Shui Yue and Fei Tu support him after his severe injuries 66 109 115.
  • Akamaru — Fellow frontline fighter whose strength is compared with Chongli’s before the Northern Country invasion 97 101.
  • Tōtōsai — Forges his first bone weapon. Chongli challenges his competence to encourage greater effort, but accepts the limits imposed by the materials 55 56.
  • Hairinbō — Upgrades Chongli’s weapon and eventually gives it the size-changing ability he wanted 71 93 101.
  • Entei — Travel companion during service to the King of the Underworld; Chongli’s cloud-riding speed allows him to keep pace 123.
