Title and Identity
- Chosen form of address: When Chongli asks how to address the newly created clone, he answers, “You may call me the King of the Underworld!” 118
- Not initially proof of Underworld sovereignty: The clone remains in the living world to govern the Wolf Tribe. It is Mingye’s original body that enters the Underworld to conquer it 118.
- Earlier related claim: Mingye previously questioned whether the being remembered as the “Lord of the Underworld” was truly its sovereign. He suspected it was merely a contender or impostor; this remained his conjecture 45.
- Actual sovereignty: By the finale, Mingye’s original body has become Lord of the Underworld and gained complete control over it, while the clone called King of the Underworld rules the human realm and Demon World 142.
Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Independent, self-aware clone | 118 | Created through a secret technique requiring seven days and nights. Can think independently and grow stronger; Chongli notices that its aura is less unfathomable than Mingye’s original aura. |
| Developed clone after more than forty years | 123 124 131 | Defeats Sesshomaru after his advancement to Great Yokai and manifestation of Bakusaiga. No exact realm is named; Penglai Immortal later judges the clone’s life tier to remain below Ancestor Demon despite its extraordinary combat strength. |
| Ancestor Demon-level technique, at the cost of his life | 140 142 | Unleashes Ice Age by sacrificing everything for power. Sesshomaru identifies the lingering technique as Ancestor Demon-level; this is a temporary feat, not a confirmed permanent realm advancement. |
| Revived clone | 142 | Mingye restores the clone after returning from the Underworld. No new realm is specified; the clone resumes dominion over the living world. |
Background / History
Creation and Rule of the Demon World
After discovering that the spirits of the Demon Wolf ancestors had been destroyed by the Underworld, Mingye opened a Netherworld Path and prepared to confront its inhabitants. Because he did not know when he would return, he created an independent clone and entrusted the Wolf Tribe to it. The clone adopted the title King of the Underworld immediately after the original departed 118.
The clone ordered the Five Demon Wolves to lead their armies into the Eastern Country and claim its resources. He subsequently crushed the White Tiger Legion and gravely wounded the Snow Emperor, though Guigu’s prepared teleportation formation allowed them to escape. After a fierce battle with Emperor Yu, he secured an agreement allowing the Wolf Tribe to take Southern Country resources while leaving the Phoenix Tribe alone. These victories established the tribe’s rule over all four great demon countries 120 122.
Search for Eternal Life
Following Izayoi’s death and the departures of Inuyasha and Kōga, the King turned from territorial conquest toward eternal life. He refused to accept that, after defeating his enemies, he would eventually lose to old age 121 122.
His search brought him to Horai Immortal Island. He seized Sōki’s Jade Casket, destroyed her spirit after taking offense at her request to spare the villagers, and discovered Penglai Immortal inside the Roaring Furnace. He then had Chongli carry the furnace away and defeated the restored, fused Four War Gods with a single slash 128 129 130 131.
At Demon Wolf Castle, he assembled leading smiths to investigate the furnace’s flaws and spent a month questioning Penglai Immortal. Learning that no being had lived beyond twenty thousand years did not end his pursuit. He next set out to seek knowledge from the ancient tree yokai Bokusenō 133 134.
War, Death, and Restoration
Reverend Baixin intercepted the King, arguing that his overwhelming power threatened humanity’s future even though he had not harmed humanity. The King killed Baixin and then Miko Qinglian, whose subsequent attack convinced him that further assassination attempts would follow. He returned to Demon Wolf Castle intent on retaliation 134 135 136.
The resulting war brought human masters and rival yokai factions against him at the Western Country–Musashi Province border. Wounded and surrounded, he unleashed Ice Age, freezing thousands upon thousands of miles and extinguishing life across the battlefield. Sesshomaru was deliberately spared, while Blood Eyes escaped after foreseeing the attack 139 140.
The clone’s death alerted Mingye, who returned from the Underworld and revealed its identity to the surviving combatants. After eliminating the four Ancestor Demons, Mingye revived the clone and returned to refining the Underworld’s source power. The King of the Underworld continued governing the human realm and Demon World 141 142.
Appearance
- Clothing: Embroidered, luxurious black robes 121 139.
- Hair and eyes: Black hair and pitch-black eyes 121 140.
- Distinguishing mark: An icy snowflake between his brows 139.
- Weapon: Slay Gods and Demons hangs at his waist 121.
- Resemblance to Mingye: Most Wolf Tribe members fail to notice the substitution. Kyora recognizes Mingye’s face in the clone, describing it as slightly more mature 120 128.
Personality
The King is composed, domineering, and intolerant of perceived challenges to his authority. He destroys Sōki’s spirit after interpreting her plea for the villagers as an attempt to tell him what to do. Hairinbō likewise understands that deceiving him would have severe consequences 129 133.
Toward those under his care, he can be protective and encouraging. He comforts Inuyasha after Izayoi’s death, reassures Kōga when the younger wolf fears losing him, and insists that both youths leave the castle to gain experience. His pursuit of eternal life reflects the same belief: sufficient strength should overcome enemies, hardship, and even time 121 122 133.
