Flesh-and-blood creatures had countless blood vessels and nerves within their bodies, carrying all their energy and commands. Digimon, however, moved according to commands issued by their digicores, which controlled their bodies through some inconceivable means. In that respect, they resembled the Spirit Race's flashes of spiritual light. The Spirit Race, however, had no fixed physical form.
Inside a Digimon lay a vast universe. Its digicore was the only celestial body in that universe, while the body the Digimon displayed was actually a set of patterns carved onto its digicore. Besides eyes, noses, and mouths, weapons were also part of a Digimon's body. Whamon's stomach, for instance, was enormous, but it was merely Whamon's weapon, no different from Leomon's sword, Ogremon's bone club, or Phantomon's scythe. Myotismon's cape and eye mask were likewise weapons.
Attacking a Digimon and completely annihilating its outer body could erase every pattern on its digicore. An utterly pure Digi-Egg would then appear in the Digimon World-utterly pure. Alternatively, one could attack the Digimon's digicore directly and shatter it, causing the Digimon World to lose that digicore forever. Few Digimon could accomplish that. Aegiochusmon's special attack could tear apart a Digimon's outer body, and with just a little luck, it could then completely shatter the digicore. Altairmon's special attack, Cross Beacon, could also construct a passage leading straight to a digicore, but few Digimon could see that passage.
