Background / History
Madara grew up amid the deprivation and warfare of the Warring States Period. His younger brothers went hungry, and he promised his mother that he would protect them. Their deaths, followed by the loss of Izuna and numerous clanspeople, left him haunted by the belief that he had failed everyone entrusted to him 34.
Izuna handled much of the Uchiha clan’s administration and diplomacy, allowing Madara to concentrate on fighting. Madara depended on his younger brother’s judgment so deeply that he later described him as effectively his own mind. Izuna died before Konoha’s founding, leaving both Madara and the clan without their principal strategist 5 8.
Madara’s relationship with Hashirama developed through their meetings beside the Naka River, their youthful friendship and falling-out, and the continued conflict between their clans. Ultimately, their shared desire for peace and unmatched strength ended the wars and brought about Konoha’s founding 26 27.
When Hōkaku sought help with Tōka’s chakra-draining pregnancy, Madara unexpectedly offered his own residence and concealed the pregnancy. He was particularly interested in the unborn child’s combined Senju and Uchiha blood. After her birth, he knocked out both parents, named her Uchiha Shingetsu, and claimed her as his disciple 1.
By Konoha’s sixth year, Shingetsu had become his principal reason for remaining in the village. Although increasingly doubtful of its peace, he considered Konoha the safest place for her childhood and believed she might discover a path toward his ideals 1 5.
Appearance
- Facial features: Hard, sharply defined features, described as though carved by blades and axes 49.
- Eyes: Normally pitch-black; become blood-red when his Sharingan is active 3 35.
- Clothing: Wears a black clan robe 35.
- Expression and bearing: Usually cold and intimidating, but visibly softens around Shingetsu and when witnessing villagers’ happiness 3 49.
Personality
Madara is proud, domineering, and uncompromising, with unusually intense attachments and equally intense hatred. His battlefield reputation frightens villagers, rival shinobi, and even Uchiha children. He recognizes that children generally fear him and initially uses this as a reason to refuse an Academy teaching post 4 5 17 23.
Despite his disdain for weakness, he is acutely sensitive to suffering. He understands how civilians are crushed by nobles and how shinobi are exploited as expendable military resources. His apparent contempt for ordinary people also conceals admiration for their determination to survive 20 22.
His treatment of Shingetsu combines severe training with conspicuous affection. He pushes her to exhaustion, yet carries her through the village, buys her sweets and jewelry, and accepts her strategic advice. He hopes she will awaken the Sharingan later rather than sacrifice a happy childhood for power 2 3 4 8.
Loss makes him increasingly protective. Memories of his dead brothers provoke an uncontrolled chakra outburst, which Shingetsu’s promise to live helps settle. After her near-death at the Orphanage, his fear becomes obsessive: he argues that she is safe only beside him and wants to keep her within the clan compound 34 35 45.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan
Madara possesses the Sharingan and its Eternal Mangekyō form 3 35.
- Shingetsu acknowledges that using his Sharingan would have allowed him to see through the tricks she employed during their training wager 3.
- His Eternal Mangekyō spins rapidly during an emotional crisis, then subsides and returns to ordinary black eyes when he regains control 35.
- He deliberately fights without the Sharingan during Shingetsu’s wager 3.
Susanoo
Madara manifests a blue chakra giant and can use Perfect Susanoo 40 45.
- Rescue precision: A four-armed manifestation wielding four long blades cleaves open the Orphanage forest and carefully retrieves Shingetsu 40.
- Destructive power: Uses Perfect Susanoo to demolish the Fire Country Daimyō’s Tenshukaku during retaliation for the attack on Shingetsu 45.
Taijutsu and Physical Strength
Madara stands alongside Hashirama as one of the strongest living shinobi, far beyond the level of ordinary clan warriors 1 3 17.
- Overpowers Shingetsu with one hand while withholding ninjutsu and limiting his taijutsu to her level 3.
- Counters sword thrusts, kicks, substitutions, and massed clone attacks during their spar 3.
- Effortlessly knocks out Tōka and Hōkaku when claiming Shingetsu as his disciple 1.
- Nearly crushes Hiruzen’s head before Hashirama persuades him to release the boy 25.
Ninjutsu and Chakra Control
- Earth Release: Shapes the gemstone in Shingetsu’s custom bracelet 47.
- Chakra tracking: Infuses that bracelet with his chakra, allowing him to sense her approximate location while she wears it 47.
- Chakra transfer: Repeatedly supplies Shingetsu with chakra during her illness and attempts to save her from fatal depletion 19 41.
- Medical Ninjutsu: Attempts to heal animals injured through Shingetsu’s Mystic Eyes experiments; injuries caused by cutting their death lines cannot be healed 18.
- Perception: Notices Tōka and Hōkaku spying on him and follows their conversation without acknowledging them 6.
Teaching and Combat Instruction
Madara favors practical experience and demanding exercises over abstract explanation 2 18.
- Accurately gauges Shingetsu’s limits and trains her until she has exhausted her available potential 2.
- Uses painful discipline without leaving wounds or damaging her body 2.
- Passes on Izuna’s swordsmanship rather than restricting her instruction to his own customary taijutsu 16.
- Investigates her Mystic Eyes through repeated tests on objects, animals, structures, and ninjutsu. He cannot reproduce their effects by cutting the lines she identifies 18.
- Teaches Academy students the uncensored history of shinobi warfare so they can make an informed choice about becoming shinobi 26 27.
Limitations
- Politics and administration: Admits that village development falls outside his expertise; previously relied on Izuna for clan affairs and diplomacy 5 8.
- Wood Release instruction: Eventually permits Hashirama to teach Shingetsu, while remaining present to supervise 47.
- Cooking: Burns porridge while attempting to prepare food with Hashirama during Shingetsu’s recovery 44.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Scythe and Gunbai — Shingetsu associates these weapons with his threatening demeanor during visits to her sickbed 19.
- Custom chakra-metal bracelet — Commissioned from Takumi Village for Shingetsu. The fitted silver bangle has lotus-like engravings and a red gemstone shaped through Madara’s Earth Release; its infused chakra supports approximate location tracking 47.
- Jewelry and clothing gifts — Buys Shingetsu a ruby-set hairpin and an entire stall’s stock, then continues collecting clothes and accessories for her 4 47.
Relationships
- Uchiha Shingetsu — Disciple and deeply cherished attachment, not his biological daughter. Her trust comforts him, and her combined bloodline inspires his hope for a new route to peace 1 5.
- Hashirama Senju — Lifelong friend, rival, and fellow founder of Konoha. They clash over Shingetsu’s care but cooperate to save her; Hashirama also persuades Madara to teach at the Academy 23 27 41.
- Uchiha Izuna — Deceased younger brother and former adviser. Madara continues to grieve him, recognizes echoes of him in Shingetsu’s advice, and preserves his swordsmanship through her training 5 8 16.
- Tobirama Senju — Hostile rival whose prejudice and treatment of Shingetsu fuel repeated confrontations. Madara demands his removal from teaching as a condition for resolving the Academy dispute 19 22 45.
- Uchiha Hōkaku — Trusted subordinate and Shingetsu’s father. Madara protects his family’s secret and orders him to represent the Uchiha as an Academy teacher 1 9.
- Senju Tōka — Shingetsu’s mother. Madara shelters her during pregnancy, but his later interference with her access to Shingetsu earns her resentment 1 6.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Shingetsu’s persistent would-be suitor. Madara reacts violently to his public proposal and later joins Hashirama and Tobirama in glaring down another romantic approach 25 50.
- Kazuko — Tenant farmer involved in Shingetsu’s farming project. Madara agrees to provide Uchiha shinobi to guard her fields in exchange for grain 34.
