Background / History

Warring States childhood

Izuna began training as soon as he could walk. After losing their other siblings, Madara subjected him to increasingly harsh training out of fear that he would lose Izuna as well. By five years old, Izuna was carrying a sword and accompanying his brother onto the battlefield, leaving him almost no opportunity to play 66 233 234.

The brothers also helped care for a sickly younger sibling, taking turns watching him through the night and seeking medical help at the slightest disturbance. Despite their efforts and their promise to protect him, the child died on the battlefield at four years old 189.

The Uchiha Clan’s guiding mind

While Madara supplied overwhelming military strength, Izuna managed nearly all the Uchiha Clan’s internal affairs and diplomacy. He personally tracked finances, organized campaign logistics, and continued fighting during the day. Madara relied so heavily on his judgment that he remembered Izuna as effectively being his own mind 5 8 135.

Izuna opposed uniting with the Senju because he feared the Uchiha would be forced to compromise their position. Even after witnessing Konoha’s prosperity following his resurrection, he rejected Tobirama’s suggestion that he should regret that opposition 216.

Death and Madara’s grief

Tobirama inflicted a fatal wound on Izuna during their wartime rivalry. Izuna died in his early twenties, shortly before Konoha’s founding, after giving his eyes to Madara. His death deprived both Madara and the clan of their principal adviser and left the prospective peace with the Senju precarious 8 148 213 233.

Madara preserved Izuna’s remains and secretly relocated his grave to a scenic location after the village was founded. Only Shingetsu knew its whereabouts; she accompanied Madara there on Izuna’s birthday and death anniversary each year 213.

Izuna’s absence continued to shape Madara’s treatment of Shingetsu. Madara sometimes saw his brother in her advice and became intensely defensive when Hashirama suggested that his overprotectiveness stemmed from losing Izuna 5 53.

Resurrection and return to Konoha

After learning about the Rinnegan’s resurrection powers, Madara became determined to bring Izuna back. Tobirama eventually reanimated him using a specially prepared White Zetsu sacrifice. Upon waking and seeing Tobirama, Izuna immediately attacked, assuming his old enemy intended to use him as leverage against Madara 201 208 213.

Madara’s voice stopped him. The ensuing ritual restored Izuna’s heartbeat, flesh, and breathing, but not his original eyes, which he had already given away. Hashirama restored his sight by transplanting Tajima’s preserved Three-Tomoe Sharingan 213.

The group initially kept his resurrection secret. Izuna used the Transformation Technique and later publicly posed as a branch-family Uchiha returning from a secret mission. Rumors linked him to Madara’s deceased brother, and many clanspeople came to believe he was the original Izuna’s illegitimate son 214 215 219 252.

Adjusting to peace

Izuna returned to a world transformed during the nearly thirteen years since his death. He admired Shingetsu’s agricultural and social reforms, Konoha’s political reach, and the Uchiha’s improved standing. He resumed clan administration, accepted government work, and took five young Uchiha as apprentices 216 217 218.

His apparent competence concealed loneliness and unresolved wartime trauma. He feared that Madara and the clan no longer needed him, while Madara’s efforts to hide painful experiences made him feel excluded. At Shingetsu’s urging, the brothers held an all-night conversation in which Madara apologized and promised greater openness 232.

Learning about Black Zetsu’s conspiracy intensified Izuna’s grief enough to awaken his Mangekyō again. Shingetsu subsequently took him shopping, playing cards, and riding swings as a way to reclaim his lost childhood. With her companionship and Madara’s encouragement, he became more cheerful and playful, though his recovery remained gradual 233 234.

Appearance

  • Build: Slender, but physically strong 222.
  • Face: Exceptionally handsome, with features strikingly similar to Sasuke’s 230 316.
  • Age after resurrection: His face remains young, showing no outward trace of the years since his death 213.
  • Hair and clothing: Changes from burial robes into a clan outfit and ties his hair into a braid after revival 214.
  • Concealed identity: Uses the Transformation Technique to appear as an unfamiliar young man while his resurrection remains secret 215.

Personality

Izuna combines meticulous planning with bold action. Madara considers him wiser and more dependable than himself, while Tobirama recognizes his cunning even in an enemy. Unlike Madara’s intimidating manner, Izuna’s gentle smile and approachable behavior make him unusually popular and socially capable for an Uchiha 5 26 230.

His devotion to Madara and the clan defines much of his life. He takes pride in their success and refuses to let the Uchiha depend solely on Madara and Shingetsu. That loyalty also has a ruthless side: after learning about the massacre in another world, he threatens to withhold the Allied Shinobi’s resurrection unless every fallen Uchiha is included 218 252 253 292.

Izuna is sensitive to being treated as unnecessary or fragile. After resurrection, he overworks himself to establish a place in the new era and hides considerable guilt beneath ordinary routines. He acknowledges that manipulation and wartime necessity do not erase the atrocities committed by his clansmen 232 233 258.

Peace reveals a mischievous side that war had suppressed. He develops an enthusiasm for toys, cushions, card games, and harmless pranks, with Tobirama becoming his favorite target. Around children, however, he can restrain his anger rather than expose them to his hostility 230 234.

  • Tobirama Senju — Former mortal enemy and the man who fatally wounded him. Their post-resurrection relationship mixes genuine hostility, government cooperation, competition, and pranks. Tobirama nevertheless thanks him for helping Itama 148 217 234 247 258.

  • Uchiha Itachi — Condemned by Izuna for betraying the clan and repeatedly traumatizing Sasuke. Izuna confronts a thirteen-year-old counterpart held by the Tobiramas, questioning why he spared Sasuke only to torment him 304 305.
