Background / History

The Nine-Tails is the strongest of the Tailed Beasts and was sealed within Naruto Uzumaki. During the Nine-Tails' rampage twelve years before the story, Minato Namikaze used the Reaper Death Seal to divide it in two: Naruto received the Yang half, while the Yin half was taken into the Shinigami's stomach alongside Minato. The division is a lasting humiliation for Kurama. 64

Initially imprisoned behind the Four Symbols Seal in Naruto's mental water prison, Kurama repeatedly leaked scarlet, negative Chakra to erode Naruto's consciousness and provoke negative emotions. It tried to convince Naruto that opening the seal would grant unrestricted access to its power, intending to escape once the seal weakened. Naruto instead used Sealing Art: Devour to absorb and purify the leaked Chakra, recognizing Kurama's insincerity. 10

Kurama continued trying to manipulate Naruto into removing the seal, including withholding Chakra in battle and exploiting Naruto's resentment toward Minato. Its relationship with Naruto began to change in Tsukuyomi space, where it received Naruto's future memories and recognized the bond they had shared in that future. When Minato later opened the seal while awakening Kushina's Chakra, Kurama shared all of its Chakra with Naruto. This made Naruto a perfect Jinchuriki and allowed Kurama to support him without the former restrictions of the seal. 109 110

By the later story, Kurama acts as Naruto's adviser and helps manage the Tailed Beasts captured within Naruto's sealing space. It remains openly domineering toward Shukaku, Saiken, and Chōmei, especially on its home ground inside the sealing space. 178 202 244

Appearance

Kurama appears as an enormous fox confined within a gloomy, flooded prison in Naruto's mind. It has blood-red eyes, sharp teeth, massive claws, and an imposing presence that overwhelms intruders to Naruto's consciousness. 10 21

Kurama is proud, irritable, and highly conscious of its status as the strongest Tailed Beast. It resents confinement, rejects being treated as Naruto's pet or Chakra supply, and initially views every offer of cooperation as an opportunity to escape. 10 23

It is also cunning and manipulative. Kurama lies about its ability to provide Chakra, uses Naruto's emotional wounds to disparage Minato, and repeatedly frames unsealing as the only path to greater power. 38 67 104

After learning Naruto's future memories, Kurama becomes protective and invested in Naruto's growth. It provides tactical advice, trains him, worries about the strain of Naruto's spiritual power, and comforts him after his parents disappear.
