Background / History

Itachi served under Kakashi Hatake in ANBU before becoming a rogue ninja. Kakashi’s connection to him was known only to relatively few people in Konoha. 13

At thirteen, Itachi massacred the Uchiha Clan—including his parents—while sparing Sasuke, then defected from Konoha. The village publicly classified him as an S-rank rogue ninja, though the events surrounding the massacre involved a hidden agreement with Danzō Shimura. 138 140 141

Shisui Uchiha’s death became another source of suspicion around Itachi. Shisui’s final message was meant to ask Itachi to protect Konoha’s future, but he only managed to carve Itachi’s name before dying; Sasuke consequently believed Itachi had murdered him. 15

After trapping Naruto in Tsukuyomi, Itachi learns of Naruto’s knowledge of future events and agrees to act as Naruto’s spy within Akatsuki. Naruto’s Yang Release also restores Itachi’s failing health and Mangekyō condition, giving him more time to act for Sasuke’s future. 63

His decisions are consistently shaped by Sasuke’s future. He refuses Kisame’s suggestions to kill Sasuke, leaves scrolls and Tsukuyomi information for Sasuke to find, and engineers circumstances that awaken Sasuke’s Mangekyō Sharingan.
