Background / History

Early Life and Defection

Orochimaru was Jiraiya’s classmate and childhood fishing companion. While Jiraiya fished to feed himself, Orochimaru did so to save his monthly stipend for unusual ninja tools 50.

He studied under Hiruzen Sarutobi and served alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade as one of Konoha’s Three Sannin. Tsunade remembers him as a dependable teammate who planned missions thoroughly and understood his companions exceptionally well 121 145.

Before defecting, Orochimaru headed a biological research laboratory in Konoha. Anko Mitarashi was his disciple and first experimental subject; Kabuto Yakushi also became his subordinate 2 49 235. He subsequently belonged to Akatsuki, where an attempt to obtain Itachi Uchiha’s body ended in defeat. That encounter made him wary of confronting Itachi again 132 191.

Alliance with Danzo

As leader of the Hidden Sound Village, Orochimaru monitored Team Seven through a white snake and arranged to meet the Fourth Kazekage during the Chunin Exams 47.

He also negotiated with Danzo Shimura through Kabuto. Orochimaru occupied Jiraiya in battle while Danzo’s forces attacked Team Seven, but the operation failed to capture Naruto or Sasuke 49 50 58. Their subsequent discussions involved controlling the Hidden Sand Village and provoking the Fourth Great Ninja War. Orochimaru regarded Danzo’s weaknesses as leverage that could turn the Root leader into his pawn 58.

Pursuit of Sasuke

Orochimaru entered the Forest of Death disguised as a female Hidden Grass ninja and placed the Heaven’s Curse Mark on Sasuke. Naruto absorbed the mark’s natural energy, briefly entered Sage of Six Paths Mode, and incapacitated Orochimaru with a kick and an elbow strike. Orochimaru surrendered the Earth Scroll and replaced his ruined body before departing 78 80.

He later ambushed Sasuke during Chidori practice. Kakashi intervened, and the two fought Orochimaru to a stalemate. Orochimaru’s ability to copy ordinary people’s appearances prevented Konoha’s search teams from locating him afterward 95.

When the Sand Village’s commitment to the invasion became uncertain, Orochimaru took Kabuto to join Kimimaro in hunting the Fourth Kazekage. He then impersonated Rasa in Konoha and supplied false intelligence about his own whereabouts, drawing powerful defenders toward the Land of Rivers 92 101 129.

Invasion of Konoha

During the Chunin Exams finals, Orochimaru’s Sound ninja and the Sand ninja launched a surprise attack. Kabuto and Dosu attempted to capture Sasuke while Orochimaru confronted Hiruzen 120.

Orochimaru fielded reanimated versions of Hashirama Senju, Tobirama Senju, Kushina Uzumaki, and Rasa. He assigned Hashirama and Kushina to counter Naruto and the Nine-Tails, while Tobirama helped him overwhelm Hiruzen 121 122 123.

Under Orochimaru’s control, Tobirama killed Hiruzen. Orochimaru then sacrificed Kimimaro to reanimate his former teacher, bringing three Hokage under his command against Naruto 124 125.

Orochimaru escaped the village, but Naruto pursued him to recover Kushina. Hashirama broke free of his control, and the pursuit developed into a confrontation involving Itachi and Kisame. Orochimaru divided the battlefield with his reanimated ninja and fled aboard Rasa’s gold-dust platform 129 130 132 133.

Failed Bargain with Tsunade

Orochimaru sought Tsunade’s medical expertise for human experiments, offering to revive Nawaki and Dan Kato in exchange. The proposal provoked conflict between Tsunade and Jiraiya 148.

Naruto subsequently freed Tobirama by absorbing the cursed chakra controlling him. Orochimaru summoned Manda and immediately abandoned the giant snake as cover for his escape 155 156.

Land of Rice Fields and Kotoamatsukami

After Naruto became Fifth Hokage, Sasuke was sent to investigate the Land of Rice Fields and hunt Orochimaru. Orochimaru temporarily incapacitated Sasuke with poison, but a destructive battle involving Sasori and clay bombs gave Sasuke an opportunity to escape 186 190 191.

Itachi and Kisame intercepted the retreating Orochimaru and Kabuto. After defeating them, Itachi imposed Kotoamatsukami’s command to “Protect Konoha” and released Orochimaru, believing the threat had been resolved 191 194.

Orochimaru broke the command by examining its contradictions: protecting the village, its inhabitants, and ninja outside its borders did not necessarily mean the same thing. He then sent Kabuto into Konoha under the pretense of obeying the genjutsu 194 196.

Kabuto’s experience under Naruto gradually shifted his loyalties. He repeatedly encouraged Orochimaru to return to Konoha and supplied information needed to release the Reaper Death Seal and reanimate Minato Namikaze 197 199 213.

Capture and Supervised Research

Orochimaru used Immortality Reincarnation to bypass the Reaper’s entanglement, released the Reaper Death Seal, and resurrected Minato. With Minato’s Flying Thunder God Technique providing transportation, he secretly reoccupied Konoha’s abandoned Root experimental base and renewed his pursuit of Sasuke’s body 232 233.

After securing Naruto’s promise to spare Orochimaru, Kabuto disclosed information about him. Naruto assembled Sasuke, Jiraiya, Tsunade, Kushina, and Mei Terumi for the capture operation 233.

Naruto overwhelmed Orochimaru’s defenses, while Minato regained autonomy and severed their connection. Orochimaru’s final Eight Branches transformation was defeated by Sasuke’s complete Susanoo 234 235.

Naruto then threatened to destroy Orochimaru’s remaining soul fragments, including the one preserved in Anko’s Curse Mark. Orochimaru accepted research supervision, with Yamato and Tobirama selected to oversee him 235.

Afterward, he occasionally taught Sasuke ninjutsu, backed him financially in a betting pool, and helped maintain the Four Red Yang Formation around Naruto and Sasuke’s sparring match 237 240.

Appearance

  • Snake-like eyes are a recurring identifying feature, including when he reveals himself beneath Rasa’s disguise 101 233.
  • Long hair and an elongated tongue appear during his preparations to hunt the Fourth Kazekage 92.
  • Human-skin disguises allow him to appear as other people, including a female Grass ninja, a Sound supervising jonin, and Rasa 78 80 92 101.
  • Eight Branches form: an enormous white-scaled serpent with eight heads and eight tails 235.

Personality

Orochimaru is calculating, patient, and difficult even for old companions to predict. He conceals his strength, prepares escape routes, and does not allow his reputation as a Sannin to stop him from retreating when survival demands it 50 51 191.

His curiosity centers on immortality, forbidden techniques, and bodies with powerful bloodline abilities. He treats Sasuke as a prospective vessel and views powerful dead ninja as assets to acquire and deploy 109 122 171.

Personal attachment rarely restrains his experiments. He sacrifices loyal subordinates, turns his teacher into a controlled combatant, and regards allies as expendable. Nevertheless, he shows brief signs of feeling: he praises Kimimaro’s value and becomes visibly emotional beside Hiruzen’s corpse before continuing his plan 57 121 125 129.

His analytical intelligence is particularly dangerous. Tobirama recognizes him as an extraordinary genius, and his ability to dismantle Kotoamatsukami through reasoning demonstrates that his greatest advantage is not always direct combat power 156 194.

Abilities & Skills

Ninjutsu Versatility

  • Possesses chakra encompassing all elements and is skilled in numerous ninjutsu 51.
  • Uses Shuriken Shadow Clone Jutsu, a technique also learned by Minato from Hiruzen 233.
  • Fights Kakashi and Sasuke to a stalemate despite fluctuations in his strength 95.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru learns and improves Tobirama’s forbidden resurrection technique, using the dead as controlled combatants 121 156.

  • Documented subjects: Hashirama, Tobirama, Kushina, Rasa, Hiruzen, and Minato 122 125 233.
  • Enhanced sacrifices: sacrifices four curse-mark-bearing Sound subordinates to maximize the revived ninja’s combat power 121.
  • Will suppression: uses cursed seals to suppress revived individuals before they can resist him 121.
  • Coordinated deployment: assigns different resurrected ninja to specific opponents and controls three Hokage in a simultaneous attack 122 125 133.
  • Limitations: Kushina immediately attempts to dispel his control; Hashirama escapes it; Naruto frees Tobirama by draining cursed chakra; Minato severs the caster connection with sealing jutsu 121 130 156 234.

Body Replacement and Immortality Reincarnation

  • Orochimaru-Style Substitution Jutsu: expels a replacement version of himself from his mouth, healing all injuries at a substantial chakra cost 57 80 234.
  • Immortality Reincarnation: transfers into another body; he intends to make Sasuke a vessel for his consciousness 129 197.
  • Reaper Death Seal exploitation: uses reincarnation to bypass the Reaper’s entanglement while undoing the seal 232.
  • Limitations: his existing body becomes overworked and approaches collapse, forcing him to seek another vessel 131 197.
  • Proposed alternative vessel: Naruto supplies a White Zetsu corpse and recommends cloning a body with Hashirama’s cells; the provided account does not confirm its completion 197.

Curse Marks and Soul Preservation

  • Places the Heaven’s Curse Mark on Sasuke and the Earth Cursed Seal on Kimimaro 80 125.
  • The Curse Mark contains natural energy, which Naruto extracts with Sealing Art: Devour 80.
  • Distributes his soul consciousness through chakra placed in other people’s Curse Marks, frustrating Tobirama’s attempt to locate his true position 156 235.
  • Anko’s Heaven’s Curse Mark can eventually restore him in complete form 235.
  • Naruto’s ability to extract the mark’s chakra creates a credible threat to this resurrection safeguard 235.

Snake Techniques and Summoning

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: releases dozens of venomous snakes from his sleeve; they maneuver around Jiraiya’s earth wall 50.
  • Myriad Snake Array: expels countless snakes, each carrying a Kusanagi Sword. Naruto destroys the formation with a Great Rasengan Ring 234.
  • Manda: summons his strongest beast, a giant purple snake and leader of Ryūchi Cave’s common snakes; uses it to cover a retreat 156.
  • Eight Branches Technique: transforms into an eight-headed, eight-tailed white serpent. Sasuke’s complete Susanoo severs nearly all its heads within minutes 235.
  • White snakes: carry messages and scrolls between Orochimaru and Kabuto 47 199 213.

Defensive Summoning

  • Triple Rashomon: summons three gigantic bronze gates as a defensive barrier 234.
  • Naruto’s Tailed Beast Bomb penetrates all three gates and injures him 234.
  • Helps establish the Four Red Yang Formation for Naruto and Sasuke’s sparring match 240.

Disguise and Infiltration

  • Vanishing Facial Copy Technique: copies another person’s appearance so effectively that Konoha cannot locate him among ordinary residents 95.
  • Impersonates Rasa to manipulate Konoha’s diplomatic decisions and divert its defenders 101 129.
  • Establishes a hidden laboratory inside the abandoned Root base 233.

Scientific Research and Analysis

  • Improves Impure World Reincarnation and completes a soul secret art that Tobirama had only partially researched 156.
  • Breaks Kotoamatsukami’s “Protect Konoha” directive by exposing ambiguity and contradictions in its command 194.
  • Researches Sealing Art: Devour; Naruto suspects its ability to acquire Wood Release reflects Orochimaru’s interest in consuming bloodline abilities 171.
  • In Naruto’s original future, develops soul-travel ninjutsu capable of transcending time and space and sends Naruto’s will to this era. These achievements are distinct from his present-era techniques 109 191 235.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — wielded against Jiraiya; Naruto’s Rasengan Bullet leaves a cut in it 51.
  • Cursed shuriken and control seals — used to suppress the wills of Impure World Reincarnation subjects 121.
  • Storage scrolls — hold laboratory bottles and jars when he prepares to abandon his Root-base hideout 233.
  • Human-skin mask — maintains his Grass-ninja disguise until Naruto’s attack exposes him 80.

Trivia

  • Naruto considers Orochimaru likely the wealthiest of the Three Sannin. He funds costly experiments partly through investments in emerging technologies 237.
  • Tsunade borrowed considerable sums from him before his defection, despite later trying to claim that he owed her money 237.
  • His reanimation of powerful ninja repeatedly backfires strategically: Hashirama and Tobirama regain autonomy and strengthen Konoha, complicating Akatsuki’s attempt to capture Naruto 130 156.
