Background / History
The Uchiha inherited the Sharingan and, potentially, the Rinnegan from the Sage of Six Paths’ elder son, Indra. Unlike the widely spread descendants of Asura, Indra’s bloodline remained concentrated in the Uchiha clan for centuries. 162 351
Naka Shrine is the clan’s ancestral ground and principal gathering place. Its New Year shrine visit once involved male and female shamans, but the clan head and spouse later assumed those ceremonial roles after the shamans disappeared during wartime. 8
Uchiha Madara, a former clan head, ended the collective New Year visit by declaring that the first couple to reach Naka Shrine would preside over it. His decision briefly created fierce competition for prestige and succession, but the clan eventually returned the duty to the hereditary clan head’s family. 8
During the Warring States period, Madara and Senju Hashirama sought to end the conflict between their clans and establish an alliance. Madara used Tobirama’s capture as leverage to secure Hashirama’s agreement, intending for the alliance to end the broader era of clan warfare rather than merely pause one feud. 460
Under Fugaku, the clan remained closely tied to Konoha’s security apparatus through the Police Force. When the force was reduced, its removed personnel were assigned to the newly formed Defense Department, responsible for barrier inspection, security duty, counterespionage, and repelling invasions. 107
Frequent meetings at Naka Shrine became a source of internal frustration: members debated past glory, criticized Konoha’s leadership, and discussed the clan’s revival. Political tension escalated when some members advocated a coup, while Fugaku and Shisui pursued ways to avoid bloodshed. 82 103 107
After Shisui began promoting Sage Mode through Ninja Crow contracts, Naka Shrine became a training center. The clan’s growing strength—and its increasing preference for Sage Mode over the Sharingan—reshaped its identity into the self-styled “Naka Sage Clan.” 161 173 380
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The clan’s hereditary dōjutsu is its traditional source of prestige and combat strength.
- Three-Tomoe Sharingan improves the user’s ability to identify openings in close combat and strengthens genjutsu. 31
- The Sharingan can copy observed techniques; Madara uses it to replicate both combat skills and mundane crafts. 240 450
- It can place susceptible opponents under genjutsu, as Fugaku does against Kisame. 380
- Many clan members regard the Sharingan as an auxiliary ability for Sage Mode rather than their main source of power. 173
Mangekyo Sharingan
The Mangekyo is an advanced Sharingan evolution associated with intense emotional loss and possesses highly individualized dōjutsu. 269 452
- Known users within the clan include Fugaku, Shisui, Itachi, Sasuke, and Izumi. 103 354 400
- Its abilities can include Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, Kotoamatsukami, and Susanoo. 71 161 168 361
- Susanoo manifests as a chakra construct whose form can progress from skeletal armor to a Perfect Susanoo. 321 384
- Repeated use carries the risk of deteriorating vision and eventual blindness. 104 384 400
- Izanagi and Izanami are forbidden Uchiha dōjutsu known to Fugaku and Itachi but withheld from ordinary members. 161
Sage Mode
The clan develops a distinct Sage Mode tradition through Ninja Crow contracts at Naka Shrine. 161
- Sage Mode grants access to natural energy and can be paired with the Sharingan or Mangekyo Sharingan. 161 282
- Practitioners may develop black wings and use Sage Art techniques, particularly Fire Style variants. 130 282
- Excessive or improperly controlled natural-energy absorption can transform a trainee into a crow. 161
- Shisui’s Sage Mode allowed him to overpower several Three-Tomoe Sharingan users during an internal dispute. 161
Fire Style and Shurikenjutsu
Fire Style and shurikenjutsu are foundational Uchiha combat disciplines.
- Fire Style is a defining clan specialty. 8
- Phoenix Flower Claw Red combines chakra-infused shuriken with Fire Style and can be used without hand seals. 31
- Shurikenjutsu is described as a core Uchiha discipline practiced even by jōnin. 277
- Clan fighters also demonstrate strong taijutsu, with Itachi’s hand control preventing opponents from forming seals. 71
Organization and Customs
- Clan head — Presides over major ceremonies, manages clan expectations, and traditionally leads the New Year shrine visit alongside their spouse. 8
- Naka Shrine — Ancestral ground, meeting hall, ceremonial site, and later Sage Mode training center. 8 161 283
- Clan meetings — Held frequently at Naka Shrine; serious meetings address Konoha relations, internal privileges, and clan policy, while others serve largely as social gatherings. 82 83 162
- Naka River God — The deity worshipped during the New Year visit, likely reflecting the clan’s historical desire for rainfall during the Warring States period. 8
- Ninja Crow contracts — Adult ninja can train at Naka Shrine, while their children are invited to sign Ninja Crow contracts after becoming ninja. 161
Relationships
- Konohagakure — The clan is a major Konoha shinobi family, though resentment over perceived marginalization and restrictions on the Police Force fuels recurring political conflict. 82 107 253
- Senju clan — Historical rival clan; Madara and Hashirama ultimately sought an alliance to end the Warring States era. 351 460
- Uzumaki clan — Shares descent from the Sage of Six Paths through Asura’s lineage, making the clans distant blood relatives. 351
- Ninja Crows / Beiyuan — Naka Shrine’s Sage Mode tradition depends on contracts with Ninja Crows; Beiyuan’s influence helps transform the clan’s training culture. 161 173
- Shimura Danzō and Root — Danzō’s actions and alleged involvement in the Nine-Tails incident become major sources of conflict between the clan and Konoha’s leadership. 253 258
Trivia
- The Uchiha fan insignia is visibly worn by clan members. 455
- Madara’s lack of a wife and heir directly shaped the unusual succession-related rules of the New Year shrine visit. 8
- Clan members jokingly characterize Perfect Susanoo as convenient for flight and travel, while many prefer Sage Mode’s wings for the same purpose. 384
