Background

Kakashi became the first outsider known to receive an Uchiha Sharingan when Obito gave him his eye before his presumed death. Fugaku defended the gift before the Uchiha clan as the bond between two comrades who had faced death together. 3

The deaths of Rin Nohara and, later, Minato and Kushina left Kakashi burdened by guilt. Minato repeatedly told him that Rin's sacrifice was not his fault and that a ninja must endure what ordinary people cannot. 6 Kakashi nevertheless came to question whether he deserved Obito's eye, since Rin had deliberately died to his Chidori for Konoha's sake. 74

Before joining Minato's squad, Kakashi graduated from the Ninja Academy at age five and earned the reputation of Cold-blooded Kakashi for placing mission success above his comrades' lives after Hatake Sakumo's suicide. The Third Hokage assigned him to Minato, alongside Obito and Rin. 472

Personality

Kakashi is observant, calculating, and unusually good at identifying an opponent's techniques from limited information. When facing a Flying Thunder God user, he immediately recognized the danger of marked shuriken and warned Shisui that avoiding physical contact was essential. 25 26 He also favors minimizing needless conflict; during the same incident, he deduced the enemy's purpose and convinced him to retreat rather than force a direct fight. 26

His grief over Rin and Obito initially leaves him withdrawn and unstable. After Obito's exposure, he visits the Spirit Consolation Monument and Naruto more often, while Guy provides him emotional support. 81 83 Over time, he becomes more open, responsible, and appreciative of others, directly thanking Itachi for revealing that Naruto survived the Nine-Tails attack. 86

Anbu service and the Flying Thunder God assassin

As an elite Anbu and Minato's disciple, Kakashi helps defend the acting Hokage's party against an assassin using the Flying Thunder God Technique. He recognizes the technique immediately, analyzes its marking mechanism, and coordinates with Shisui to keep marked shuriken away from their group. 25 26

Chunin Exams and Obito's return

Kakashi serves as chief examiner for the Konoha–Grass Chunin Exams, where his harsh and unconventional written test provokes the examinees. 68 After Itachi awakens the Mangekyo Sharingan, Kakashi admits that Danzō once influenced him into attempting to assassinate the Hokage. 74

When Obito reappears, Kakashi tries to explain Rin's death but cannot bring himself to say the full truth. Obito reveals that he witnessed Rin die, survived the incident, released the Nine-Tails, killed Minato and Kushina, and attempted to kill Naruto. Kakashi Arc

Kakashi awakens in the past, where Rin is alive, Minato is his Jonin instructor, and Obito has not yet fallen. He reunites with them during Minato's survival exercise and immediately recognizes the chance to change their future. 472

He passes the exercise by realizing that cooperation, not obtaining bells, is the true objective. He gradually rebuilds trust with Obito and Rin, scolds Obito for prioritizing good deeds over mission briefings, and begins sharing the warmth of ordinary team life. 473 474 477
