Background / History

Konoha service and defection

Orochimaru studied under Hiruzen Sarutobi and became one of the Konoha Sannin. Itachi remembers seeing him command Konoha ninja to victory during wartime. In a Second Shinobi World War side story, Tsunade expects him to instruct Nawaki and Mikoto’s team; Orochimaru is particularly satisfied with taking Nawaki as a disciple 38 206 398.

Danzō’s leak forces him to defect before he has prepared sufficient money, personnel, or facilities. He rebuilds by taking odd jobs during the day and renovating an underground laboratory at night, relying on kidnappers because he lacks capable subordinates. Itachi and Beiyuan rescue the children held there and destroy the base; Orochimaru nevertheless offers to forgive the loss if Itachi joins him 38.

Repeated pursuit by Konoha’s ANBU destroys further laboratories. Orochimaru is also implicated in Konoha’s subversion and identified as having led Zetsu’s creation. Joining Akatsuki temporarily improves his circumstances: after Kakuzu’s death, he makes an arrangement with Konan and financially supports the organization 319.

Akatsuki research and withdrawal

Orochimaru uses Akatsuki’s reach to establish laboratories across several countries, gather children with unusual bloodlines or secret techniques, and excavate powerful ninja’s graves. Jiraiya destroys one experiment involving a rapidly reproducing, life-devouring creature, possibly connected to Hashirama’s cells 90 252.

He identifies Pain as a puppet after noticing that its appearance does not age or develop as Konan’s does. Reanimating Yahiko confirms his suspicions. He plans to use Yahiko’s hair to draw the Uchiha and Beiyuan into conflict with Akatsuki while he relocates to the Land of Wind 180.

When Itachi’s reconnaissance team approaches, Orochimaru accelerates the move, sends the reanimated Dan Katō to delay them, and transfers his equipment to a secure desert base. He takes Hidan and Kimimaro with him, calling them precious treasures. His departure amounts to abandoning Akatsuki, although he leaves Konan explosive-tag research to strengthen her side against the crow 204 252.

Seizure of Sunagakure

Orochimaru initially struggles against the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, and resorts to reanimating Rasa’s wife, Karura, as an emotional weapon. Zetsu offers him control of Sunagakure and the Land of Wind in exchange for the One-Tails jinchūriki, supplying Madara’s corpse and material from the Outer Path Statue 234.

He reanimates Madara, whose overwhelming power defeats Rasa. Orochimaru subsequently disguises himself as the Kazekage using Shōmensha no Jutsu and occupies the Kazekage’s office. After removing unstable elements within the village, he begins encouraging dissatisfaction with the Land of Wind’s daimyō 235 238 249.

Kabuto reports the elimination of Chiyo and Ebizō and delivers Chiyo’s resurrection technique. Orochimaru treats the acquisition as an opportunity to improve his immortality research. His relationship with Madara remains dangerous: he recognizes that the resurrected Uchiha has plans of his own and prepares a countermeasure if Madara tries to use him as a diversion 250 272.

Appearance

  • Early clothing: Wears a standard Konoha jōnin uniform but no forehead protector after his defection 38.
  • Distinguishing features: Snake-like pupils and an unnaturally long tongue, which he frequently uses to lick his lips 38 204.
  • Serpent bodies: Can shed a human vessel and emerge as a white serpent; the Eight Branches Technique expands this into a mountain-sized eight-headed snake 331.
  • Later combat gear: In Drifting Chronicle, equips himself with unusual armor adapted from human-puppet technology 409.

Personality

Orochimaru’s defining ambition is to understand every jutsu and overcome death. He treats forbidden bodies, ancient history, and unusual chakra as research opportunities even when investigating them places him in danger. His curiosity about Madara’s survival, Zetsu’s origin, and Obito’s escape exemplifies this willingness to pursue potentially lethal knowledge 235 250.

He is pragmatic rather than committed to fair combat. He uses dead relatives as leverage, recruits talented people despite their hostility, and shifts to negotiation when resistance becomes hopeless. After Shisui exposes his weakness and defeats his reanimated fighters, Orochimaru immediately considers a future partnership instead of insisting on victory 122 234 372.

His capacity to inspire loyalty contrasts with his exploitation of people as experimental material. Hidan and other displaced youths regard his company as a home and eagerly volunteer to defend him. Kabuto likewise trusts him deeply, although Orochimaru’s fixation on his plans sometimes causes him to overlook that devotion 175 206.

He also presents himself as a victim of Konoha’s hypocrisy. When Itachi condemns his human experimentation, Orochimaru points to Konoha’s practice of sending major criminals to the Land of Waves. His explanation does not change Itachi’s judgment that the village could not tolerate his experiments 322.

Abilities & Skills

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru improves Tobirama’s forbidden resurrection technique and builds an army from deceased ninja 180 252.

  • Documented subjects: Nawaki, Dan Katō, Bunpuku, Yahiko, Karura, Sasori’s parents, Madara, and several former Kage 89 180 204 234 249 424.
  • Tactical use: Deploys reanimated ninja as scouts, delaying forces, combatants, and psychological weapons 204 234 429.
  • Control limit: Hashirama escapes his control; Madara is likewise too dangerous to leave active. In Drifting Chronicle, Orochimaru substitutes a Hashirama puppet and keeps the genuine reanimated Madara sealed 234 424 426.
  • Body-quality limit: Inferior sacrifices restrict a resurrected ninja’s chakra and capabilities, as demonstrated by Tobirama at Naka Shrine 372.
  • Countermeasure: Kotoamatsukami changes the reanimated Itachi’s will, allowing him to act independently 418.

Body Transfer and Resurrection Backups

Body-Immortality Reincarnation supports Orochimaru’s search for suitable replacement vessels 180.

  • Vessel selection: Covets Itachi’s body and, in Shippuden-era side stories, intends to replace a deteriorating temporary body with Sasuke’s 94 331.
  • Cursed-seal backups: Stores chakra and soul within seals, preserving opportunities for resurrection after his main body is destroyed 330.
  • Demonstrated revival: The alternate Sasuke restores him through Anko’s cursed seal 338.
  • Host dependence: In another side story, he emerges from Sasuke when Sasuke can no longer suppress his chakra 381.
  • Weakness: Knowledgeable opponents can expel the seal’s chakra, absorb its energy, or target its resurrection contents 330 332 370 372.

Cursed Seals and Natural-Energy Techniques

His seals grant power through an inferior form of Sage Transformation, but later research greatly expands their functions 332 414.

  • Enhancement: Sasuke’s revised seal increases his physique and chakra while largely preserving his human appearance 414.
  • Surveillance: Orochimaru senses activation and views the battlefield through chakra placed in the seal 414.
  • Programmable casting: The palm seal changes shape to perform different techniques without ordinary hand seals 427.
  • Sage application: Curse Mark Sage Art: Dragon Transformation manifests a giant, hazy serpent 428.
  • Energy limitation: Possesses all elemental chakra types but cannot fuse them as he wishes. Combining tailed-beast chakra into Six Paths-level chakra is a stated research goal, not a confirmed achievement 419.

Human Puppets and Genetic Engineering

Orochimaru obtains Sasori’s human-puppet methods by using Sasori’s resurrected parents as leverage, then develops both wearable armor and powerful artificial combatants 409.

  • Legendary replicas: Produces puppets modeled on Hashirama, Madara, Obito, Asura, and Indra 420.
  • Artificial ocular development: Awakens Mangekyō Sharingan in cultured puppets; Obito’s replica gains space-time abilities 420.
  • Control architecture: Replaces puppet hearts with processor cores to preserve obedience even if they develop independent thought 420.
  • Replacement bodies: Keeps backups usable while their heart cores remain intact 420.
  • Research failure: Transplanting Hashirama’s cells into the Madara puppet does not produce a Rinnegan 420.
  • Acquisition barrier: Cannot obtain viable research material from Beiyuan or his original world’s Itachi; Eight Gates Sasuke also prevents him from retaining a hair sample 420.

Combat Ninjutsu

  • Snake techniques: Uses Shadow Snake Hand, giant-snake summons, and Manda, whose contract connects him to Ryūchi Cave 38 44 330.
  • Eight Branches Technique: Transforms into an enormous eight-headed serpent; the alternate Sasuke identifies it as a forbidden technique countered by Susanoo 331.
  • Defensive summoning: Uses Triple Rashōmon against Kakashi and Itachi 89.
  • Elemental attacks: Demonstrates powerful seal-less Lightning Release and Water Dragon Bullet while wearing his improved armor 409.
  • Flame sealing: Absorbs Amaterasu with a Fire Seal Method variant and later releases it with enough precision to melt Sasuke’s sword 427 428.
  • Explosive tags: Uses Mutual Multiplication Explosive Tags to defeat Sasuke’s Susanoo 428.
  • Taijutsu standing: Ranks last in taijutsu among the three Konoha Sannin in the early encounter 41.

Reaper Death Seal Expertise

  • Knows that several former Hokage’s souls are trapped within the Reaper, not only Minato’s 338.
  • Uses a mask at the Uzushio ruins to summon the Reaper and release the sealed souls 339.
  • Escapes the ritual’s bodily cost by transferring his soul into a prepared corpse, then helps reanimate the former Hokage 339.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Projects the weapon from a snake emerging from his mouth for a surprise attack 330.
  • Sealing scrolls and coffins — Store corpses, resurrection materials, and reanimated ninja; he also possesses Sakumo Hatake’s remains before Beiyuan takes the scroll 98 136 374.
  • Human-puppet armor — Enhances ninjutsu and chakra manipulation 409.
  • Mechanical giant snake — A mobile creation combining machinery and chakra conduits; cursed seals feed absorbed energy into its systems. It also houses the Eight-Tails and sealed Madara during Drifting Chronicle 409 426.
  • Outer Path Statue fragments — Used as resurrection material and retained for his attempt to synthesize Six Paths-level chakra 235 419.
  • Chiyo’s technique scrolls — Contain the Self-Sacrificing Reincarnation Technique acquired after the Sunagakure takeover 250.
  • Reaper-summoning mask — Enables the release of souls trapped by the Reaper Death Seal in a Shippuden-era side story 339.

Relationships

  • Kabuto Yakushi — Favored assistant and research confidant. Orochimaru shares his findings with him and entrusts him with intelligence work, puppet deployment, and war operations 250 419 421.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher whose warnings against forbidden existences Orochimaru knowingly disregards. Their shared belief that techniques can be deciphered informs his countermeasures against reanimated threats 235 272.
  • Jiraiya — Former teammate, pursuer, and enduring rival. In Drifting Chronicle, Orochimaru reanimates him and controls his movements while bargaining with his desire to protect Konoha 38 408 410.
  • Tsunade — Former teammate whose grief he has witnessed firsthand. He revives both Nawaki and Dan; in Drifting Chronicle, she ultimately surrenders Konoha to prevent further casualties 98 204 430.
  • Uchiha Itachi — Initially a recruitment and vessel target; later a threat he avoids. The original world’s Itachi eventually reveals that Orochimaru’s apparent escape to another world was a monitored relocation 38 94 204 430.
  • Beiyuan / Kitahara — The red-eyed crow repeatedly destroys or neutralizes his resources. Orochimaru fears it enough that identifying its presence becomes a priority in another world 98 204 414 415.
  • Uchiha Sasuke — A body candidate in Shippuden-era settings, an experimental subject in Drifting Chronicle, and a persistent pursuer in Orochimaru’s original world. Different versions are sharply distinguished by their strength 330 408 409.
  • Uchiha Shisui — An alternate-world opponent who exposes his cursed-seal weakness and becomes a temporary business partner. Shisui secretly intends to use and later eliminate him 372 374.
  • Shimura Danzō — Collaborator turned object of distrust. His betrayal forces the original Orochimaru’s premature defection; another version revises the Konoha Crush Plan after Shisui’s partly fabricated warnings 38 373 374.
  • Yamato — A product of Orochimaru’s human experimentation and one of the ANBU investigators most frequently searching his laboratories 204.
  • Konan and Nagato — Former Akatsuki associates whose organization provides access to resources. Orochimaru manipulates their conflict with the Uchiha to cover his withdrawal 180 204 319.
  • Uchiha Madara and Black Zetsu — Dangerous partners in the Sunagakure takeover. Orochimaru studies their secrets while preparing against the possibility of being sacrificed to their plans 234 235 272.
  • Sasori — A hostile research source; Orochimaru’s resurrection of his parents creates a personal vendetta 249 409.
  • Hidan and Kimimaro — Valued followers whom he retrieves before abandoning the Rain Village 204 206.
  • Hiruko — An old friend whose apparent attempt to obtain Itachi’s Sharingan alarms him 250.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Shippuden-Era Encounters

  • Itachi’s visit to the underground base: The local Orochimaru recognizes that the visiting Fifth Hokage Itachi is unbeatable. He is caught in a personalized Tsukuyomi showing a life where Nawaki survives, yet his forbidden-jutsu obsession still leads him to defect and endure pursuit by Tsunade and Jiraiya 175 176.
  • Eight Gates Sasuke’s arrival: The visiting Sasuke exposes his cursed-seal backups, kills Manda, and overwhelms his deteriorating body. Later, Sasuke revives him through Anko and requires his expertise to release the Hokage’s souls 330 331 338 339.
  • Naka Shrine negotiations: Shisui defeats his reanimated Hokage strategy, blends genuine information with a fabricated Danzō conspiracy, and redirects the Konoha Crush Plan into a temporary alliance against Konoha’s leadership 372 373 374.
  • Konan’s alternate Akatsuki timeline: News that Orochimaru has killed the Third Hokage and that Sasuke has defected prompts Akatsuki to debate recruiting Sasuke 438.

Orochimaru’s Drifting Chronicle

Orochimaru arrives in another world after passing through a space-time gate. He finds Jiraiya’s corpse, reanimates him, and questions him to identify differences between worlds. At the northern base, he discovers that the local Sasuke has already killed that world’s Orochimaru; his superior armor and ninjutsu allow him to defeat Hebi and secure cooperation instead of killing its members 408 409.

Absorbing the alternate Orochimaru’s chakra from Sasuke gives him the dead counterpart’s memories. He then uses Sasuke’s duel with Itachi as a test, charging ten million ryō for assistance and sending Jiraiya to hold off Kisame. Itachi’s apparent death contradicts everything he expects from the powerful Itachi he knows, so he acquires the corpse and a White Zetsu sacrifice to verify it through reanimation 410 414 415 416.

His ambitions escalate into obtaining every tailed beast’s chakra. Kabuto deploys his legendary human puppets, captures Killer B, and gives Akatsuki seven days to surrender its seven captured beasts. Orochimaru’s forces defeat or subdue Sunagakure, Kumogakure, and Kirigakure, attack Iwagakure, and turn toward Konoha 419 420 421 426.

At Konoha, Orochimaru absorbs Itachi’s Amaterasu, defeats Eternal Mangekyō Sasuke, and exploits Kakashi’s trauma through the return of Minato and Obito. Tsunade accepts surrender to avoid further deaths. His triumph is curtailed when the original world’s Itachi appears as a chakra soul and reveals that he marked and relocated Orochimaru: research may continue, but advanced results will be reclaimed, and the world’s peace remains under protection 427 428 429 430.

Notable Quotes

“My teacher once warned me never to try and touch those forbidden existences in the ninja world... But I've already opened that forbidden door!” 235

“I have no greater ambitions either—I am merely a scholar who enjoys research.”
— His reassurance to the reanimated Itachi 416

“If I can obtain Six Paths chakra, I can also use it to glimpse the power of the Sage of Six Paths!” 419

Trivia

  • Hanzo originally bestowed the Sannin title after defeating the trio; the narration presents Orochimaru as someone unlikely to forget that humiliation 224.
  • Orochimaru is blamed for the Grass Village’s destruction despite personally knowing what actually happened. Witnessing its annihilation helps explain his reluctance to confront Itachi and Beiyuan directly 204.
  • Suspicions that he caused the Nine-Tails attack, Obito’s defection, or an assassination attempt against the Third Hokage are discussed by other characters, not established as facts in the supplied account 90.
  • His original-world experience makes ordinary Uchiha behavior seem unusual: he is astonished that the alternate Sasuke relies on Fire Release and the Sharingan rather than the Eight Gates 409.
  • A recurring joke contrasts his pursuit of eternal life with his habit of provoking extraordinarily dangerous enemies 419.
