Background / History
Founding Hallownest
Wyrm arrived after Herrah had established Deepnest, united the surrounding tribes, and founded Hallownest. The author places his arrival around Lin Jin’s awakening, making the development of their kingdoms roughly contemporary 148 158.
His rule produced the City of Tears’ orderly streets, planned buildings, and comprehensive sewer system. Lin Jin admired these achievements because Wyrm had built his civilization from nothing rather than relying on knowledge from another world 134.
The Moths abandoned Radiance for the Pale King. Radiance’s fear of being forgotten drove her to spread the Infection through dreams, threatening the kingdom he had created 147.
The Vessel and Dreamer Plans
Wyrm initially contained outbreaks through quarantine, doubled patrols, and Soul Sanctum research into a possible vaccine. These measures were intended to buy time for his principal solution: imprisoning Radiance inside a being without thought, emotion, or will 76 130.
He and the White Lady placed their eggs in the Abyss, where the Void eroded them into Vessels. More than a hundred thousand were born and attempted the climb toward Wyrm. He selected the first to reach him—the Hollow Knight—and closed the gate behind it, leaving the others below. The Five Great Knights then trained the chosen Vessel for its intended role 76.
Wyrm arranged for four Dreamers to safeguard the seal:
- Monomon, the Teacher.
- Lurien, the Watcher.
- Herrah, the Beast.
- Vespa, Queen of the Hive 76.
The sacrifices weighed on both parents. When the White Lady confessed her guilt, Wyrm promised that there would be no more sacrifices. A subsequent vision of the approaching Flame Capital delegation revealed branching futures in which two gods might destroy one another or merge into a greater threat 130.
The Soul Sanctum Purge
Lurien’s investigation connected Marissa’s attack and numerous disappearances to Aldren and the Soul Sanctum. Wyrm personally broke its Soul Barrier and led the assault. Once the defenders’ orange blood exposed their Infection, he changed his orders from arrest to extermination 139.
Aldren absorbed twelve Acolytes’ souls and challenged him, but Wyrm shattered his mask and overwhelmed his attacks. Aldren escaped by teleporting beyond the City of Tears, where Wyrm lost his magical trail 139 140.
The investigation also brought Wyrm an infection-resistant Charm supplied by the traveler Nox. Recognizing its soul-concealing principle, he ordered copies made and examined Marissa’s portrait of its creator. His subsequent work brought the Infection’s spread under control 140 146.
Failure of the Pure Vessel
At Herrah’s council, surviving Vessels were presented before their parents, and Nox challenged the Hollow Knight’s supposed purity. The Knight finally cried tears of Void and admitted that it was scared 153.
Nox then persuaded Wyrm to examine the future directly. His foresight revealed that the seal would inevitably fail and Hallownest would succumb to Infection, although he also glimpsed a hazy future without it. Overcome by the failure of his plan, Wyrm broke down before his wife and child 154.
After embracing the Hollow Knight, he abandoned the Vessel plan but refused to abandon Hallownest. He agreed to hear the Flame Capital’s proposal and reconsider Nox, whose knowledge and carefully timed interventions had forced him to confront truths he had resisted 156.
Peace Talks and the Ashen Flame Pact
Radiance interrupted the council through an infected guard and proposed negotiations. Wyrm demanded that she first demonstrate sincerity by lifting the Infection. When reports confirmed that it was receding, he continued researching countermeasures in case she broke her promise 157 158.
At the Crown of Hallownest, he accepted two conditions: punishment of the Moths who had betrayed Radiance, and restoration of her records and voluntary worship. Her final demand—that she wanted Lin Jin as a partner—caught him off guard 161.
Wyrm subsequently signed the Ashen Flame Pact with Isara, treating Hallownest and the Flame Capital as equals. He promised to share his Void research and cooperate against its dangers, having recognized that its obedience to him did not make it harmless elsewhere 163.
He also resolved to rescue any Vessels still surviving in the Abyss and give his children proper childhoods. By the delegation’s departure, the Hollow Knight no longer needed to pretend to be pure. Wyrm thanked Lin Jin, sent precious goods and white flowers, and pledged Hallownest’s support to its new ally 158 165.
Appearance
Wyrm is a white Higher Being with a small body, a mask, spiritually radiant eyes, and luminous wings 76 130 156.
- Eyes: Become engulfed in pale white when his foresight activates 130.
- Monarch Wings: Allow him to float directly upward rather than merely flap into flight 154.
- Regal bearing: Maintains a composed, imposing expression even during dangerous negotiations 130 161.
- Protective aura: Rain parts before touching him when he draws on his power 139.
Personality
Wyrm treats the preservation of Hallownest as his overriding responsibility. His conviction that “no cost” is too great allows him to sacrifice his own children while concealing his sorrow beneath duty. He is neither indifferent to their deaths nor initially willing to reconsider the plan that caused them 76 130.
Proud and stubborn, he initially neglects the Flame Capital’s alliance proposal and hopes its envoys will learn from Hallownest’s grandeur. He distrusts unexplained goodwill and scrutinizes Nox’s unusually convenient knowledge and interventions 136 151 156.
His eventual acceptance of failure reveals a capacity for change. He acknowledges the Hollow Knight as his child, seeks to make amends to surviving Vessels, and becomes willing to bow his head if doing so will save his kingdom 156 158.
Political caution remains central to his behavior. Even after Radiance begins withdrawing the Infection, he secretly develops fallback defenses. At negotiations and banquets, he uses protocol, third-party leverage, and carefully managed courtesy rather than relying on strength alone 158 161 164.
Abilities & Skills
Soul Magic
Soul is one of Wyrm’s divine domains. His immense reserves vastly exceed the Soul Sanctum’s magic in both quality and quantity 139 140 146.
- Soul Spear: Forms and launches concentrated soul weapons capable of piercing infected defenders and shattering Aldren’s mask 139 140.
- Soul blades: Shapes sweeping attacks that pierce multiple enemies blocking his path 139.
- Barriers and shields: Blocks incoming spells, including Aldren’s massive soul shock wave 139 140.
- Spell analysis: Identifies weaknesses in Aldren’s Soul Barrier and recognizes flaws in proposed Binding Seal designs 139.
Foresight
Wyrm possesses an innate divine gift that lets him anticipate events before ordinary reports reach him 76.
- Reveals approaching visitors, possible conflicts between gods, and the eventual failure of the Radiance seal 130 154.
- Shows branching possibilities rather than a single guaranteed outcome 130.
- Becomes hazier as Radiance and other divine actors alter events 76 130 151.
- Prolonged use causes severe exhaustion, headaches, and collapse; an immediate second attempt can yield only incoherent symbols 130 156.
Soul Perception
Wyrm senses minds and divine presences through soul sight 139 151.
- Perceives ordinary subjects as candlelike lights and the Dreamers as larger flames 151.
- Detects the unfamiliar power carried by the Flame Capital’s envoys 151.
- Tracks Nox’s presence into Deepnest, though Herrah’s territory limits the precision of his perception 146.
- Attempts to follow teleportation traces, but loses Aldren’s trail beyond the City of Tears 140.
Vessel Creation and Void Sealing
Wyrm supplied the souls used to create the Vessels; the White Lady supplied their bodies, and the Void Sea eroded the eggs 89.
- The resulting Vessels require no rest and can sustain continuous combat 89.
- His attempt to create a completely thoughtless, emotionless Vessel fails; the Hollow Knight possesses feelings despite its imposed role 153 158.
- A seal requiring his royal mark can suppress a seething expanse of Void 165.
Research and Engineering
Wyrm maintains a private workshop and studies soul power, puppets, Void, and infection defenses 139 146 158.
- Replicates the principle of Nox’s Charm, concealing its wearer’s soul from spiritual entities 140 146.
- Continues Campfire and Charm research as insurance against renewed Infection 158.
- Replaces Void with Soulfire in a flying construct, increasing its efficiency by at least 300%; the higher output also creates significant wear 158.
Dominion and Statecraft
Dominion is Wyrm’s other stated divine domain. His political skill encompasses governance, diplomacy, and maintaining a balance among powerful beings 146 161.
- Uses Grimm’s presence as third-party leverage during negotiations with Radiance 161.
- Accepts restored voluntary worship partly because another Higher Being can contribute to Hallownest’s balance of power 161.
- Formalizes equal cooperation with the Flame Capital and offers his research against the Void 163.
Relationships
- White Lady — Wife and co-creator of the Vessels. Their shared guilt strains them, but she forgives him and supports him when his sealing plan collapses 76 130 154 156.
- Hollow Knight / Pure Vessel — Child originally selected as Radiance’s prison. Wyrm ultimately accepts its feelings and releases it from the requirement to remain pure 76 153 156 165.
- Other Vessels — Children abandoned in the Abyss. He resolves to rescue the survivors and provide them with proper lives 158.
- Herrah — Dreamer and mother of his daughter Hornet. Her forceful manner unsettles him; she convenes the council that exposes the Vessel plan’s flaws 130 145 146 153.
- Hornet — Daughter through Herrah. He initially keeps his distance from her, making her investigation of the Infection difficult 136 145.
- Vespa and Helia — Vespa becomes the fourth Dreamer through a renewed bargain; Helia is their daughter and Hornet’s younger paternal half-sister 76 135.
- Lin Jin / Nox — Initially a suspicious outsider, later a valued helper and allied god. His intervention prevents the future Wyrm had foreseen 156 158 165.
