Background / History
Childhood and John Wick
Peter’s mother used to take him to a bakery to buy his favorite bread. By his early appearances, Peter and May have only each other to rely on in the city. John becomes involved in their lives and later rescues Peter from a chaotic crowd using Accio Peter 11 22.
Peter shows scientific talent early, winning a Junior Science and Technology Award. Fascinated by John’s magic, he asks about magical-school acceptance letters and invites John to spend Christmas at his home, where he can show him his LEGO creations. John promises to bring him a present 57.
John introduces Shang-Chi, who uses the name Sean, as a potential tutor and friend. Peter already likes Midtown High School, where Shang-Chi is then studying 67.
School Bullying and a Godfather
Peter’s slight build, academic interests, and preference for LEGO over sports make him a target for Jim, a school bully. He conceals the bullying because he fears retaliation and does not want to burden May. When Jim attacks Peter and Ned, Shang-Chi intervenes; Peter and Ned remain beside him when Jim returns with his older brother and reinforcements 83 84.
May brings John to the resulting school meeting for moral support. John challenges the head of discipline’s favoritism toward Jim’s family and subsequently suggests that Peter might be his godson. Rumors that Peter has an underworld boss for a godfather later leave classmates wary and school staff conspicuously friendly toward him 84 148.
Kidnapping and Reconciliation
John knowingly allows Peter and May to be kidnapped as part of his handling of Kingpin. After waking safely at home, Peter initially wonders whether the kidnapping was a dream. Once he understands that John could have prevented it, he feels betrayed by someone he deeply admired 158 169.
Their reconciliation takes place on a rooftop. John predicts that Peter will someday gain great power, but rejects the idea that heroism requires sacrificing family. He admits that he allowed the capture to train Peter and explicitly calls him his godson, promising that he would choose Peter over a stranger 169.
John’s accompanying present is less comforting: a frightening doll enchanted to return after Peter throws it away. It keeps Peter awake all night and frightens him into fainting when it reappears in his room 169.
Becoming Spider-Man
During a laboratory visit, an unfamiliar spider falls inside Peter’s collar and bites his neck before dying. Peter initially keeps the incident secret because he feels little discomfort. His subsequent physical changes lead him to discover his new abilities and begin stopping street crime 312 318.
Peter hopes for an imposing superhero name, but the public calls him the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. He initially dislikes the name because it sounds more like a helpful neighbor than a powerful hero 318.
Six months after the bite, Peter is still learning how to balance helping strangers with protecting May. Shang-Chi discovers his identity after mistaking the masked Peter for a robber; Peter inadvertently confirms the secret by responding to his own name. Shang-Chi then helps him conceal it 341.
Tony Stark and the Civil War
Tony visits Peter’s home under the pretext of approving a grant application. He recognizes the young hero’s enormous potential despite his shabby presentation. Peter subsequently enters his first fight against other superheroes, facing Bucky and Sam and catching Bucky’s metal-arm punch with one hand 341 343.
John encounters Peter during the Civil War and keeps him inside the United Nations building to protect him. Peter’s admiration for Tony contrasts with his much more immediate fear of John, whose childhood “training” included throwing him between buildings 351 359 374.
Back in Queens, Peter trains with Shang-Chi while keeping his activities from May. Ned eventually discovers the secret after seeing Peter return through his bedroom window and immediately becomes excited that his best friend is a superhero 359 360.
Lies and the Black-Market Weapons
Peter investigates criminals using unusual weapons while also trying to impress Liz Toomes. Basil, a snowy owl that follows him, disrupts Flash’s mockery and draws Peter into conversations with Michelle 360 371 372.
After fighting a heavily armed flying soldier with Ferdinand’s help, Peter discovers a green-skinned face beneath the attacker’s faceplate. Lies contacts him, identifies him as Peter Parker, and reveals that Spider-Man—not Liz—is the target. Peter narrowly avoids an exploding phone thanks to Spider-Sense 373 374.
Seeking to prove himself worthy of John’s recognition and the Avengers, Peter follows a traced signal to a slaughterhouse. Lies traps him in cold storage, where concern for his classmates prevents him from attempting a reckless escape. Signal shielding blocks his calls, and the cold steadily overwhelms him. Tony ultimately locates him through triangulation after noticing that his signal has disappeared 374 375 377.
Peter continues investigating with Ferdinand’s information and Basil’s assistance. Ferdinand explains that overloaded Magic Crystals can make the black-market weapons explode; Basil mobilizes birds throughout New York to search for Lies and guides Peter toward a weapons transaction 376 377.
Losing the Suit and Choosing His Own Path
Peter follows the investigation onto the Staten Island ferry. His intervention disrupts an FBI operation arranged by Tony, and the ferry is left split apart before an unidentified silver substance rejoins it. Tony confiscates Peter’s suit, judging him insufficiently mature to use it. At home, John’s electronic-biological creation MOSS contacts Peter to offer guidance before he sinks further into self-doubt 378.
After Basil rescues him, Peter uncovers the Skrulls’ true plot and returns to his homemade suit. He comes to understand that Peter Parker makes Spider-Man, not the equipment 384.
Peter captures the gang sent by the Skrulls to hijack Stark’s transport plane. Tony responds by offering Avengers membership and a new suit, but Peter declines because he recognizes his immaturity and reliance on others to repair his mistakes. John later reminds him to consider himself, May, and the people who love him before risking his life through selflessness 385.
Alien War and Later Activities
When a huge spaceship descends over New York, Peter has Ned distract their school-bus passengers so he can escape through a window and join the fight. Tony had deliberately withheld the crisis from him for his protection 509.
During the ensuing war, Tony formally names Peter an Avenger. Shang-Chi congratulates him, but Tony still instructs him to listen to the adults 519.
In a later conversation, Peter again asks why Tony will not let him become an Avenger. Shang-Chi explains that the Sokovia Accords require identity disclosure, while John warns that exposing Peter’s identity would endanger May. No revocation of Tony’s earlier induction is described in these passages 566.
Peter continues fighting crime after school. When he rushes toward a fire, John extinguishes it with magic before Peter arrives; Peter looks back toward him and smiles beneath his mask 566.
Appearance
Peter changes from a scrawny child into a visibly muscular teenager after the spider bite 83 312.
- Before mutation: Slight, “beanpole” build and mild nearsightedness 151 312.
- After mutation: Enviable muscles and sharply improved eyesight 312.
- Hero attire: A masked homemade outfit, later supplemented by Tony’s red-and-blue technological suit 341 373 384.
Personality
Peter is considerate and loyal. He hides his bullying because May already works hard, defends Ned when bullies insult him, and avoids probing Shang-Chi’s past because he believes everyone is entitled to secrets 83 84 359 372.
His heroism grows from a sincere desire to help: seeing someone in trouble and doing nothing makes him uneasy. Nevertheless, he struggles to reconcile that impulse with John’s insistence that responsibility must not come at the expense of loved ones 341 385.
Peter is talkative, excitable, and sometimes naïve. He chats with criminals during arrests, jokes while fighting experienced superheroes, and apologizes even to opponents he has just struck. His eagerness for recognition also makes him vulnerable to Lies’ manipulation 318 343 374 377.
His setbacks eventually produce greater self-awareness. Rather than immediately accepting Tony’s Avengers offer, he acknowledges his recklessness and decides that he is not yet ready 385.
Abilities & Skills

- Karen’s communications can be blocked by signal shielding 375.
- Inexperience and concern for others can override his judgment, particularly when Lies threatens people around him 375 377.
